A Paradigm For Spreadsheet Engineering Methodologies, Thomas A. Grossman Jr., O Ozluk Jan 2004

A Paradigm For Spreadsheet Engineering Methodologies, Thomas A. Grossman Jr., O Ozluk

Business Analytics and Information Systems

Spreadsheet engineering methodologies are diverse and sometimes contradictory. It is difficult for spreadsheet developers to identify a spreadsheet engineering methodology that is appropriate for their class of spreadsheet, with its unique combination of goals, type of problem, and available time and resources. There is a lack of well-organized, proven methodologies with known costs and benefits for well-defined spreadsheet classes. It is difficult to compare and critically evaluate methodologies. We present a paradigm for organizing and interpreting spreadsheet engineering recommendations. It systematically addresses the myriad choices made when developing a spreadsheet, and explicitly considers resource constraints and other development parameters. This …

The Exterior Orientation Of Aerial Imagery Using Existing Orthoimagery And Terrain Models:A Performance Test, Finnian O'Cionnaith Jan 2004

The Exterior Orientation Of Aerial Imagery Using Existing Orthoimagery And Terrain Models:A Performance Test, Finnian O'Cionnaith

Masters

In every part of the world the rate of map revision is alarmingly low when compared to the rate of change of many human influenced surface features. There is therefore a requirement to regularly gather up-to-date information about surface features and to incorporate changes in maps both quickly and effectively before it becomes history. When an aerial photograph is taken, it contains errors one category of which is caused by the aircraft taking the photograph being tilted. This aerial photograph by itself is of little commercial value. Accurate maps cannot be created from it, its use in GIS (Geographical Information …

Neural Networks Satisfying Stone-Weiestrass Theorem And Approximating, Pinal Thakkar Jan 2004

Neural Networks Satisfying Stone-Weiestrass Theorem And Approximating, Pinal Thakkar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Neural networks are an attempt to build computer networks called artificial neurons, which imitate the activities of the human brain. Its origin dates back to 1943 when neurophysiologist Warren Me Cello and logician Walter Pits produced the first artificial neuron. Since then there has been tremendous development of neural networks and their applications to pattern and optical character recognition, speech processing, time series prediction, image processing and scattered data approximation. Since it has been shown that neural nets can approximate all but pathological functions, Neil Cotter considered neural network architecture based on Stone-Weierstrass Theorem. Using exponential functions, polynomials, rational functions …

Selected Hydrologic Data For Sand Cove Wash, Washington County, Utah, Aaron Norton, David D. Susong

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

Southwestern Utah is one of the most arid and fastest growing regions of Utah. Development of new and existing water resources will be required to meet the water needs of the region. Sand Cove Wash, a tributary of the Santa Clara River that flows into Gunlock Reservoir, was investigated as a potential site for diverting peak runoff from the Santa Clara River in order to delay its arrival at the reservoir or to artificially recharge alluvial sediment or the underlying Navajo aquifer. Hydrologic data collected in this study are described and listed in this report. Six boreholes were drilled in …

Discrete-Time Approximations Of Stochastic Delay Equations: The Milstein Scheme, Yaozhong Hu, Salah-Eldin A. Mohammed, Feng Yan Jan 2004

Discrete-Time Approximations Of Stochastic Delay Equations: The Milstein Scheme, Yaozhong Hu, Salah-Eldin A. Mohammed, Feng Yan

Articles and Preprints

In this paper, we develop a strong Milstein approximation scheme for solving stochastic delay differential equations (SDDE's). The scheme has convergence order 1. In order to establish the scheme, we prove an infinite-dimensional Itô formula for "tame" functions acting on the segment process of the solution of an SDDE. It is interesting to note that the presence of the memory in the SDDE requires the use of the Malliavin calculus and the anticipating stochastic analysis of Nualart and Pardoux. Given the non-anticipating nature of the SDDE, the use of anticipating calculus methods appears to be novel.

The Natural History And Morphology Of The Eastern Cricket Frog, Acris Crepitans Crepitans, In West Virginia, Kimberly Ann Bayne

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Two subspecies of cricket frogs, Acris crepitans blanchardi and Acris crepitans crepitans, historically have occurred in West Virginia. The range of Acris c. blanchardi, Blanchard’s Cricket Frog, begins along the Ohio River extending into West Virginia. The Eastern Cricket Frog, Acris c. crepitans, is found in counties located in the eastern panhandle. The Eastern Cricket Frog is a species of great concern. Two sites where Acris c. crepitans historically occurred, two sites that never contained A. c. crepitans, one historical site that currently has A. c. crepitans, and two new sites that have A. c. crepitans were studied by auditory …

First-Principles Study Of Magnetism In (112̄0) Zn1−Xmnxo Thin Film, Q. Wang, Puru Jena Jan 2004

First-Principles Study Of Magnetism In (112̄0) Zn1−Xmnxo Thin Film, Q. Wang, Puru Jena

Physics Publications

First-principles calculations of total energies and magnetism of Zn1−xMnxOthin film are performed by simulating it with a slab consisting of seven layers along (112̄0). It is shown that a single Mn atom shows very little preference for the site it occupies. This is consistent with the experimental finding that Mn atoms are homogeneously distributed in ZnO films. As the concentration of Mn atoms increases, antiferromagnetic coupling between Mn atoms becomes more favorable, and there is a tendency for Mn atoms to form clusters around oxygen, in agreement with recent experiments.

Metastability Of A Gold Nanoring: Density-Functional Calculations, Q. Sun, Q. Wang, Puru Jena, R. Note, J-Z. Yu, Y. Kawazoe Jan 2004

Metastability Of A Gold Nanoring: Density-Functional Calculations, Q. Sun, Q. Wang, Puru Jena, R. Note, J-Z. Yu, Y. Kawazoe

Physics Publications

First-principles calculations based on gradient corrected density functional theory show that a cluster of as few as 90 gold atoms can be stabilized in a ring structure having fcc (111) motif with the binding energy/atom and interatomic distance approaching 91% and 96% of the bulk values, respectively. Although the ring structure lies 0.139eV/atom higher in energy than a polyicosahedral structure, the calculated frequencies are real. Thus under appropriate experimental conditions it may still be possible to synthesize a metastable form of gold nanoring, as found in the recent experiment.

Hydrogen Adsorption And Magnetic Behavior Of Fen And Con Clusters: Controlling The Magnetic Moment And Anisotropy One Atom At A Time, N. O. Jones, M. R. Beltran, Shiv N. Khanna, T. Baruah, M. R. Pederson Jan 2004

Hydrogen Adsorption And Magnetic Behavior Of Fen And Con Clusters: Controlling The Magnetic Moment And Anisotropy One Atom At A Time, N. O. Jones, M. R. Beltran, Shiv N. Khanna, T. Baruah, M. R. Pederson

Physics Publications

Theoretical studies to investigate the effect of H absorption on the magnetic moment of small Fen and Con clusters have been carried out using gradient corrected density-functional approach. Our studies on clusters containing up to four transition metal and 2 H atoms show that the successive addition of H atoms can lead to monotonic or oscillatory change from the free cluster magnetic moment. A detailed analysis of the density of electronic states shows that the variations in the magnetic moment can be related to the location of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital in the parent cluster. It is shown that …

Carrier-Mediated Ferromagnetism In N Codoped (Zn,Mn)O (101¯0) Thin Films, Q. Wang, Q. Sun, Puru Jena, Y. Kawazoe Jan 2004

Carrier-Mediated Ferromagnetism In N Codoped (Zn,Mn)O (101¯0) Thin Films, Q. Wang, Q. Sun, Puru Jena, Y. Kawazoe

Physics Publications

Using first principles calculations based on the density functional theory and generalized gradient approximation we show that the ground state of Mn doped ZnO (101¯0) thin film changes from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic when codoped with N. The ferromagnetic coupling between Mn spins arises due to the overlap between N 2p and Mn 3d electrons in the spin up band, rendering the system half-metallic character.

Javanesque Effects: Appropriation Of Batik And Its Transformations In Modern Textiles, Abby Lillethun Jan 2004

Javanesque Effects: Appropriation Of Batik And Its Transformations In Modern Textiles, Abby Lillethun

Department of Art and Design Scholarship and Creative Works

American batik practice emerged in the early twentieth century based on traditional techniques from Java and those filtered through Dutch Nieuwe Kunst. The promotion of batik through the Arts and Crafts movement in North America fostered egalitarian endorsement from artisans, individual practitioners, and consumers, across geographic locales, social milieu, and skill levels. Encouraged by manuals, magazine articles, and exhibitions, enthusiasm for batik grew across the nation and in the avant-garde enclave of Greenwich Village. While practitioners were cautioned to avoid excessive veining or crackle in their works in emulation of fine tradition, commercial enterprises helped to transform the aesthetic …
