An Algorithm To Recognise Small Seifert Fiber Spaces, J. Hyam Rubinstein Jan 2004

An Algorithm To Recognise Small Seifert Fiber Spaces, J. Hyam Rubinstein

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

The homeomorphism problem is, given two compact n-manifolds, is there an algorithm to decide if the manifolds are homeomorphic or not. The homeomorphism problem has been solved for many important classes of 3-manifolds - especially those with embedded 2-sided incompressible surfaces (cf [12], [15], [16]), which are called Haken manifolds. It is also well-known that the homeomorphism problem is easily solvable for two 3-manifolds which admit geometries in the sense of Thurston [36], [31]. Hence the recognition problem, to decide if a 3-manifold has a geometric structure, is a significant problem. The recognition problem has been solved for all geometric …

"A New Phase Of The Complex Trinitratotris(Triphenylphosphineoxide)Neodymium(Lll), J. Brannon Gary

Faculty Publications

There has been considerable interest in the complexes formed by the lanthanides with various monodentate neutral ligands with O as the donor atom. Phosphine oxides, in particular, have proven useful in complexing to lanthanide metal ions and have found practical application in the solvent extraction and separation of lanthanides.1 Several lanthanide(III) nitrate complexes with triphenylphosphine oxide (OPPh3) have been prepared resulting in complexes having as few as two and as many as four OPPh3 groups per lanthanide center.2−4 An earlier study by Cousins and Hart5 identified the complex [Nd(OPPh3)3(NO3)3]. Two crystal phases of this same complex were briefly reported later …

In Quest Of True Equality: A Study Of The Climate For Women At Gettysburg Since 1975, Sara Gustafson Jan 2004

In Quest Of True Equality: A Study Of The Climate For Women At Gettysburg Since 1975, Sara Gustafson

The Gettysburg Historical Journal

In 2003, the election of Katherine Haley Will as Gettysburg College’s thirteenth president began a new era for women on campus. Will will be the first female president in the history of the college, and her election signifies the tremendous legal and psychological changes that have shaken both the college and the nation over the past quarter century. Federal legislation, the slowly-broadening vision of the school’s administration, and the proactive stance taken by women themselves have contributed to making Gettysburg College a place of seemingly strong gender equality.

A Preferred Vision For Leading Elementary Schools : A Reflective Essay, Tammy Murphy-Flynn Jan 2004

A Preferred Vision For Leading Elementary Schools : A Reflective Essay, Tammy Murphy-Flynn

Graduate Research Papers

My beliefs about education have been evolving for nearly four decades. These beliefs about education have developed as I have grown professionally. My many roles as a student, teacher, mother, and counselor have influenced my beliefs and values. Each role has provided a different perspective from which I have viewed the educational world. The different roles, and their perspectives, have overlapped, agreed, and disagreed. My life roles and experiences have shaped me and will continue to do so.

The list for elements that are critical to exemplary leadership is truly endless. I believe that for an administrator the elements change …

Radical Submodules And Uniform Dimension Of Modules, Patrick F. Smith Jan 2004

Radical Submodules And Uniform Dimension Of Modules, Patrick F. Smith

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

We investigate the relations between a radical submodule N of a module M being a finite intersection of prime submodules of M and the factor module M/N having finite uniform dimension. It is proved that if N is a radical submodule of a module M over a ring R such that M/N has finite uniform dimension, then N is a finite intersection of prime submodules. The converse is false in general but is true if the ring R is fully left bounded left Goldie and the module M is finitely generated. It is further proved that, in general, if a …

Visualizing 1d Regression, David J. Olive Jan 2004

Visualizing 1d Regression, David J. Olive

Articles and Preprints

Regression is the study of the conditional distribution of the response y given the predictors x. In a 1D regression, y is independent of x given a single linear combination βTx of the predictors. Special cases of 1D regression include multiple linear regression, binary regression and generalized linear models. If a good estimate ˆb of some non-zero multiple cβ of β can be constructed, then the 1D regression can be visualized with a scatterplot of ˆbTx versus y. A resistant method for estimating cβ is presented along with applications.

Maxwell Institute Publications

Hugh Nibley is one of the best-known and most highly revered of Latter-day Saint scholars. For over forty years this near-legendary teacher has enthralled his readers and listeners with his encyclopedic knowledge, his wit, and his untiring research in defense of Latter-day Saint beliefs.

Now you can join Dr. Nibley in the first of four Honors Book of Mormon classes that he taught at BYU during 1988-90. Part four covers 3 Nephi 6 through Moroni 10. It is vintage Nibley, with his insights, humor, and passionate convictions, discussing a book that he loves and knows so well.

Investigation Of Single Bubble Sonoluminescence By Acoustic Cavitations Of D20, Suzanna Williams, James Black, Curtis Harris, Ralph H. France Iii Jan 2004

Investigation Of Single Bubble Sonoluminescence By Acoustic Cavitations Of D20, Suzanna Williams, James Black, Curtis Harris, Ralph H. France Iii

The Corinthian

The acoustic cavitation of D20 is measured using an ocean optics ultraviolet spectrometer. Walls of a container were constructed for the D20 using 2mm thick by 6 cm long quartz cylindrical cavity. The upper and lower transducers are silver plated piezoelectric quartz crystals. Compressing a Teflon seal between the piezoelectric crystal and quartz tube creates a watertight seal. Argon is bubbled through the solution of D20 to replace any other existing dissolved gases, as single bubble sonoluminescence is known to work best with dissolved noble gases. The container is immersed in the D2 …

Medical Training Using Simulation: Toward Fewer Animals And Safer Patients, Jonathan Balcombe Jan 2004

Medical Training Using Simulation: Toward Fewer Animals And Safer Patients, Jonathan Balcombe

Experimentation Collection

This paper presents the current status of computer-based simulation in medicine. Recent technological advances have enabled this field to emerge from esoteric explorations in academic laboratories to commercially available simulators designed to train users to perform medical procedures from start to finish. Today, more than a dozen companies are producing virtual reality simulators and interactive manikins for training in endoscopy, laparoscopy, anaesthesia, trauma management, angiography, and needle insertion. For many of these procedures, thousands of animals are still being used in training. Yet simulation has many advantages that can transcend scientific, ethical, economic and logistical problems that arise when using …

Comparing Models For Measuring Ring Strain Of Common Cycloalkanes, Brad A. Hobbs Jan 2004

Comparing Models For Measuring Ring Strain Of Common Cycloalkanes, Brad A. Hobbs

The Corinthian

The number of carbon atoms bonded in the ring of a cycloalkane has a large effect on its energy. A molecule's energy has a vast impact on its stability. Determining the most stable form of a molecule is a useful technique in the world of chemistry. One of the major factors that influence the energy (stability) of cycloalkanes is the molecule's ring strain. Ring strain is normally viewed as being directly proportional to the instability of a molecule. It is defined as a type of potential energy within the cyclic molecule, and is determined by the level of "strain" between …

Grass Or Trees? Performance Of Riparian Buffers Under Natural Rainfall Conditions, Australia, Lucy Mckergow, I Prosser, R Grayson, David Weaver, D Heiner Jan 2004

Grass Or Trees? Performance Of Riparian Buffers Under Natural Rainfall Conditions, Australia, Lucy Mckergow, I Prosser, R Grayson, David Weaver, D Heiner

Journal articles

Riparian vegetation can trap sediment and nutrients derived from hillslopes. Most research into the effectiveness of riparian buffers has been experimental and little quantitative data exists on performance under natural field conditions. This study reports on grass and tree buffer performance under natural rainfall conditions in two contrasting Australian environments. Buffers receiving runoff from hillslopes cropped with bananas were monitored over a 4-year period in the wet topics of Far North Queensland (FNQ). Runoff, bedload and suspended loads were measured leaving the crop and leaving 15 m wide dense grass and remnant rainforest riparian buffers. The grass buffer was able …

My Vision For Administering Elementary Schools : A Reflective Essay, Angela J. Fowler Jan 2004

My Vision For Administering Elementary Schools : A Reflective Essay, Angela J. Fowler

Graduate Research Papers

I believe the most profound experiences have been watching my mentor in her administrative style and comparing that to the style of my current and past administrators. Somewhere along the way I have taken elements from each one of their administrative styles, and shaped it into a style of my own. I believe I will be an excellent leader, largely due to the tremendous experiences along the way. I am excited to think about the successes and challenges I will encounter as I guide leadership capacity, and shape the culture of the people I lead.

This paper will be a …

Be Star Spectroscopy Using The Uca Fiber-Fed Spectrograph, Scott Austin Jan 2004

Be Star Spectroscopy Using The Uca Fiber-Fed Spectrograph, Scott Austin

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Beginning in June 2003, undergraduate students and the author have spectroscopically monitored bright Be stars using a custom built fiber-fed spectrograph attached to the UCA Observatory 11-inch Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope. We have obtained 0.8 Angstrom/pixel resolution spectra of the H-alpha line for over forty Be-Stars. Some have been observed on multiple dates in order to detect any temporal changes. Line profiles, velocities, and observed variations for some of these stars will be presented.

Bioinformatic Approaches For Objective Detection Of Water Masses On Continental Shelves, Mark A. Moline, Matthew J. Oliver, Scott Glenn, Josh T. Kohut, Andrew J. Irwin, Oscar M. Schofield, Paul W. Bissett Jan 2004

Bioinformatic Approaches For Objective Detection Of Water Masses On Continental Shelves, Mark A. Moline, Matthew J. Oliver, Scott Glenn, Josh T. Kohut, Andrew J. Irwin, Oscar M. Schofield, Paul W. Bissett

Biological Sciences

As part of the 2001 Hyper Spectral Coupled Ocean Dynamics Experiment, sea surface temperature and ocean color satellite imagery were collected for the continental shelf of the Mid-Atlantic Bight. These images were used to develop a water mass analysis and classification scheme that objectively describes the locations of water masses and their boundary locations. This technique combines multivariate cluster analysis with a newly developed genetic expression algorithm to objectively determine the number of water types in the region on the basis of ocean color and sea surface temperature measurements. Then, through boundary analysis of the water types identified, the boundaries …

Individual Colour Patches As Multicomponent Signals, Gregory F. Grether, Gita R. Kolluru, Karen Nersissian Jan 2004

Individual Colour Patches As Multicomponent Signals, Gregory F. Grether, Gita R. Kolluru, Karen Nersissian

Biological Sciences

Colour patches are complex traits, the components of which may evolve independently through a variety of mechanisms. Although usually treated as simple, two-dimensional characters and classified as either structural or pigmentary, in reality colour patches are complicated, three-dimensional structures that often contain multiple pigment types and structural features. The basic dermal chromatophore unit of fishes, reptiles and amphibians consists of three contiguous cell layers. Xanthophores and erythrophores in the outermost layer contain carotenoid and pteridine pigments that absorb short-wave light; iridophores in the middle layer contain crystalline platelets that reflect light back through the xanthophores; and melanophores in the basal …
