Hyperbolic Sets That Are Not Locally Maximal, Todd L. Fisher Dec 2004

Hyperbolic Sets That Are Not Locally Maximal, Todd L. Fisher

Faculty Publications

This paper addresses the following topics relating to the structure of hyperbolic sets: First, hyperbolic sets that are not contained in locally maximal hyperbolic sets. Second, the existence of a Markov partition for a hyperbolic set. We construct new examples of hyperbolic sets which are not contained in locally maximal hyperbolic sets. The first example is robust under perturbations and can be constructed on any compact manifold of dimension greater than one. The second example is robust, topologically transitive, and constructed on a 4-dimensional manifold. The third example is volume preserving and constructed on R4. We show that every hyperbolic …

Capsules And Semantic Regions For Code Visualization And Direct Manipulation Of Live Programs, Kenneth J. Goldman Dec 2004

Capsules And Semantic Regions For Code Visualization And Direct Manipulation Of Live Programs, Kenneth J. Goldman

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

JPie is a visual programming environment supporting live construction of Java applications. Class modifications, such as declaring instance variables and overriding methods, take effect immediately on existing instances of the class to encourage experimentation in an educational setting. Because programs are edited live, editing gestures must transform the program from one well-formed state to another, without intermediate ambiguous states. To accomplish this, JPie’s visual representation provides capsules, which represent logical code units, and semantic regions, which represent different aspects of a program. A capsule’s meaning depends upon its containing semantic region. Similarly, a gesture, which involves manipulation of a capsule, …

Damage Reduction Estimates And Benefit-Cost Ratios For Feral Swine Control From The Last Remnant Of A Basin Marsh System In Florida, Richard M. Engeman, Henry T. Smith, Robert Severson, Mary Ann Severson, John Woolard, Stephanie A. Shwiff, Bernice Constantin, Daniel Griffin

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

The introduction of swine (Sus scrofa) has adversely affected the environment of many natural habitats throughout the world. Basin marshes are dwindling ecosystems in Florida that are especially vulnerable to damage by feral swine. In January 2003, the estimated amount of swine damage to the exposed portion of the last remnant of a basin marsh system in Savannas Preserve State Park (SPSP) was 19% (an area of 5 ha). Economic valuations for the swine damage were based on the monetary amounts that wetland regulators have allowed permit applicants to spend in mitigation attempts to replace lost wetland resources. …

On-Road Emissions In Asia Measured By Remote Sensing, Donald H. Stedman, Gary A. Bishop, Niranjan Vescio, Nitin Manawat, Peter Mcclintock Dec 2004

On-Road Emissions In Asia Measured By Remote Sensing, Donald H. Stedman, Gary A. Bishop, Niranjan Vescio, Nitin Manawat, Peter Mcclintock

Fuel Efficiency Automobile Test Publications

On-road emissions are precisely the emissions which are impacting the air quality and which need to be controlled if air quality improvements are desired. Remote sensing measures mass emissions of CO, HC, NO and smoke per kg (or per L) of fuel burned. On-road emissions are not certification emissions for new vehicles, although new vehicles measured on-road most often provide remote sensing readings well within their certification values. On-road emissions are not the same as readings from scheduled emission tests, although on average the two correlate very well. The major difference between scheduled emission tests and on-road emissions readings is …

Wave Scattering From Infinite Cylindrical Obstacles Of Arbitrary Cross-Section, Matthew B. Weber Dec 2004

Wave Scattering From Infinite Cylindrical Obstacles Of Arbitrary Cross-Section, Matthew B. Weber

Theses and Dissertations

In this work the scattering of an incident plane wave propagating along a plane perpendicular to the xy-plane is studied. The wave is scattered from an infinitely long cylindrical object of arbitrary cross-section. Due to the arbitrary geometry of the obstacle, a finite differences numerical method is employed to approximate the solution of the scattering problems. The wave equation is expressed in terms of generalized curvilinear coordinates. Boundary conforming grids are generated using elliptic grid generators. Then, a explicit marching in time scheme is implemented over these grids. It is found that as time grows the numerical solution converges to …

Byu Micro-Sar: A Very Small, Low-Power Lfm-Cw Synthetic Aperture Radar, Michael Israel Duersch Dec 2004

Byu Micro-Sar: A Very Small, Low-Power Lfm-Cw Synthetic Aperture Radar, Michael Israel Duersch

Theses and Dissertations

Brigham Young University has developed a low-cost, light-weight, and low power consumption SAR for flight on a small unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) at low altitudes. This micro-SAR, or uSAR, consumes only 18 watts of power, ideal for application on a small UAV. To meet these constraints, a linear frequency modulation-continuous wave (LFM-CW) transmit signal is utilized. Use of an LFM-CW signal introduces some differences from the typical strip map SAR processing model that must be addressed in signal processing algorithms. This thesis presents a derivation of the LFM-CW signal model and the associated image processing algorithms used for the uSAR …

The Effects Of Influent Debit On Hydrodynamic Characteristic Of Bojongsoang Facultative Pond: Without Wind Effects, Rositayanti Hadisoebroto, Suprihanto Notodarmojo Dec 2004

The Effects Of Influent Debit On Hydrodynamic Characteristic Of Bojongsoang Facultative Pond: Without Wind Effects, Rositayanti Hadisoebroto, Suprihanto Notodarmojo

Makara Journal of Technology

The Effects of Influent Debit on Hydrodynamic Characteristic of Bojongsoang Facultative Pond: Without Wind Effects. The performance of facultative pond in Bojongsoang WWTP have reported to be unstable. One of the cause of the unstable performance is the hydrodynamic characteristics that not met the criterion. The improper hydrodynamic characteristics are included the existence of dead-zone, the short-circuiting, and the turbulence due to eddy current. The study was to analyze the effect of the influent debit variation on the hydrodynamic characteristics of the pond using mathematical model. The two-dimensional hydrodynamic model was built from two hydrodynamic equations which are continuity and …

The Proportional Odds Model For Assessing Rater Agreement With Multiple Modalities, Elizabeth Garrett-Mayer, Steven N. Goodman, Ralph H. Hruban Dec 2004

The Proportional Odds Model For Assessing Rater Agreement With Multiple Modalities, Elizabeth Garrett-Mayer, Steven N. Goodman, Ralph H. Hruban

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

In this paper, we develop a model for evaluating an ordinal rating systems where we assume that the true underlying disease state is continuous in nature. Our approach in motivated by a dataset with 35 microscopic slides with 35 representative duct lesions of the pancreas. Each of the slides was evaluated by eight raters using two novel rating systems (PanIN illustrations and PanIN nomenclature),where each rater used each systems to rate the slide with slide identity masked between evaluations. We find that the two methods perform equally well but that differentiation of higher grade lesions is more consistent across raters …

Cross-Study Validation And Combined Analysis Of Gene Expression Microarray Data, Elizabeth Garrett-Mayer, Giovanni Parmigiani, Xiaogang Zhong, Leslie Cope, Edward Gabrielson Dec 2004

Cross-Study Validation And Combined Analysis Of Gene Expression Microarray Data, Elizabeth Garrett-Mayer, Giovanni Parmigiani, Xiaogang Zhong, Leslie Cope, Edward Gabrielson

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

Investigations of transcript levels on a genomic scale using

hybridization-based arrays led to formidable advances in our

understanding of the biology of many human illnesses. At the same time, these investigations have generated controversy, because of the probabilistic nature of the conclusions, and the surfacing of noticeable discrepancies between the results of studies addressing the same biological question. In this article we present simple and effective data analysis and visualization tools for gauging the degree to which

the finding of one study are reproduced by others, and for integrating multiple studies in a single analysis.

We describe these approaches in …

Atrazine Runoff In The Blue River Basin: Geomorphology, Rainfall, And Agronomic Practices, Kundan Dhakal Dec 2004

Atrazine Runoff In The Blue River Basin: Geomorphology, Rainfall, And Agronomic Practices, Kundan Dhakal

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Atrazine concentrations in the Big Blue River Basin (BRB) in Nebraska and Kansas periodically exceed the U.S. EPA Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) of 3 µg L-1. The present study is focused on watershed variables influencing surface runoff of atrazine. The assessment includes the impact of corn and sorghum planting progress (indicating atrazine application), rainfall, antecedent soil water content, and soil restrictive layer on stream-measured weekly atrazine load in independent BRB subwatersheds for 1997 - 2004. Maximum atrazine loading occurred after most of the corn had been planted but during sorghum planting from mid-May to early June, immediately following …

Type 3 Functional Response Of Mice To Gypsy Moth Pupae: Is It Stabilizing?, Eric M. Schauber, Richard S. Ostfeld, Clive G. Jones Dec 2004

Type 3 Functional Response Of Mice To Gypsy Moth Pupae: Is It Stabilizing?, Eric M. Schauber, Richard S. Ostfeld, Clive G. Jones

Publications

We conducted field experiments in 2002 and 2003 to determine whether the functional response of white-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus ) to gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar ) pupae is decelerating (e.g. type 2) or accelerating (e.g. type 3) at low pupal density. In both experiments, live gypsy moth pupae were deployed in June (prior to the appearance of natural pupae) at densities of approximately 1, 8, and 35 pupae per mouse home range in oak-forest grids in upstate New York and monitored over 10 days for signs of predation. Pupae were deployed 1.5-m high on tree boles in 2002, whereas in …

Sapere Aude: Critical Ontology And The Case Of Child Development, James Wong Dec 2004

Sapere Aude: Critical Ontology And The Case Of Child Development, James Wong

Communication Studies Faculty Publications

This paper argues that Foucault’s proposed positive program of practical critique in his later work, which he calls ‘critical ontology,’ provides a response to his critics. The goal of critical ontology is to “separate out, from the contingency that has made us what we are, the possibility of no longer being, doing or thinking what we are, do, or think.” However, it may be objected that, since Foucault emphasizes going beyond contingencies, it appears that he is guilty of committing a kind of genetic fallacy. I will defend Foucault against such a charge by using concepts and practices in child …
