Understanding The Role Of Language/Culture In Group Work Through Qualitative Interviewing, Gavin Melles Jun 2004

Understanding The Role Of Language/Culture In Group Work Through Qualitative Interviewing, Gavin Melles

The Qualitative Report

The second language student experience of group work at university is not often transparent in survey evaluations, although the multicultural nature of the student population in Australasia would suggest that culture and language should be on the research agenda. Culture and language, notwithstanding, is used in the higher education literature to position the Asian learner as different and problematic, although such cultural models and stereotypes have been the subject of some criticism in recent years. Through semi-structured qualitative interviewing in focus group interviews with nineteen South East Asian students, I explore the ways students account for their experiences of group …

Provisions Of Trustworthiness In Critical Narrative Research: Bridging Intersubjectivity And Fidelity, Glenda Moss Jun 2004

Provisions Of Trustworthiness In Critical Narrative Research: Bridging Intersubjectivity And Fidelity, Glenda Moss

The Qualitative Report

This paper is a reflective-reflexive examination of provisions of trustworthiness in critical narrative research. The author presents her understanding of provisions of trustworthiness as a science and as an art, and blurs these boundaries as she acknowledges their tension in practice. She weaves between theory and her experience in two studies first the study of the Texas-Spain Visiting Teachers Program and secondly the study of Amish culture and education where the author felt a deep sense of responsibility that she maintain trustworthiness. This paper examines the provisions of trustworthiness as evidence of research accountability and shared responsibility and brings to …

Qualitative Research On Mediated Dialogism Among Educators And Pupils, Thomas Hansson Jun 2004

Qualitative Research On Mediated Dialogism Among Educators And Pupils, Thomas Hansson

The Qualitative Report

The relevance of qualitative research to virtual practices rests on subject knowledge and practical know-how on operations for exchange, growth, learning, and dialogue. Highlighting the discursive perspective, this paper covers theory on emerging didactics for online learning. In doing so, the contents show how computer-mediated learning incorporates a dialogical orientation. There is an empirical account of experiences of applying the theory in a comprehensive Nordic network with an aspect of computer-mediated theory focused on Ba, a construct illustrating how educators and pupils keep their higher mental operations creative in the process of critiquing and applying knowledge in English as a …

The Representation Of 'Race' In Ondaatje's In The Skin Of A Lion, Glen Lowry Jun 2004

The Representation Of 'Race' In Ondaatje's In The Skin Of A Lion, Glen Lowry

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

Glen Lowry, in his paper "The Representation of 'Race' in Ondaatje's In the Skin of a Lion" bases his discussion on the observation that critics tend to view Ondaatje's writing in terms of a progression towards complex issues of "race" and post-coloniality. In contrast, Lowry argues that the matter of "race" forms an integral aspect of Ondaatje's oeuvre and Lowry proposes that In the Skin of a Lion is a key site in the development of Ondaatje's engagement with issues of "race" and the cultural politics of post-coloniality. Focusing on Ondaatje's depiction of Toronto in terms of its complex history …

From Commonwealth To Postcolonial Literature, Edward O. Ako Jun 2004

From Commonwealth To Postcolonial Literature, Edward O. Ako

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his paper,"From Commonwealth to Postcolonial Literature," Edward O.Ako begins by establishing the link between Empire and English-language literature. Drawing on Elleke Boehmer, Gauri Viswanath, and Terry Eagleton, Ako discusses the ideological uses of literature and argues that the textual forms that emerged as "resistance" to imperial domination were referred to by a multiplicity of terms: Commonwealth Literature, New English Literature, Literature in English, Third World Literature, World Fiction, Minority Literature, Multicultural Literature, or Postcolonial Literature. Ako examines the merits and handicaps of each designation and explains why, in his view, the term "postcolonial" is the more appropriate notion and …

Monénembo's L'Aîné Des Orphelins And The Rwandan Genocide, Lisa Mcnee Jun 2004

Monénembo's L'Aîné Des Orphelins And The Rwandan Genocide, Lisa Mcnee

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her paper, "Monénembo's L'Aîné des orphelins and the Rwandan Genocide," Lisa McNee discusses Tierno Monénembo's L'Aîné des orphelins, a novel that offers a double discourse and a dual memory of the genocide that took place in Rwanda in 1994. McNee argues that L'Aîné des orphelins presents us with an extraordinary kind of fictional testimonial to genocide. Although Monénembo is not from Rwanda and did not participate in the tragedy, only someone who has paid the price of the clarity needed to distinguish between good and bad faith could have written a novel like L'Aîné des orphelins. Monénembo's characterization of …

Single Professional Women: A Global Phenomenon Challenges And Opportunities, Linda Berg-Cross, Anne-Marie Scholz, Joanne Long, Ewa Grzeszcyk, Anjali Roy Jun 2004

Single Professional Women: A Global Phenomenon Challenges And Opportunities, Linda Berg-Cross, Anne-Marie Scholz, Joanne Long, Ewa Grzeszcyk, Anjali Roy

Journal of International Women's Studies

This paper presents the globalization of elite single professional women (SPW) as the first new global sociological phenomenon of the twenty-first century. We trace the economic roots of the phenomenon and how female empowerment interacts with the psychological prerequisites for mating. We then trace how the phenomenon is being expressed outside of the United States, in India, Poland, and Germany. We conclude by putting these observations into a historical perspective and briefly listing possible strategies for responding, adapting, and maximizing one’s options.

Why We Need More Aboriginal Adults Working With Aboriginal Students, Damien Howard Jun 2004

Why We Need More Aboriginal Adults Working With Aboriginal Students, Damien Howard

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

The culturally shaped communicative context of classrooms has been documented to be an important influence on social and educational outcomes for Indigenous students. There is increasing evidence that it may be a critical factor in the outcomes of Indigenous students with conductive hearing loss (CHL) during their school years. This article describes research that explores social and educational disadvantage associated with conductive hearing loss in two remote schools with wholly Indigenous class groups taught in English by non-indigenous teachers.

Is 'Education' Becoming Irrelevant In Our Research?, R, S. Webster Jun 2004

Is 'Education' Becoming Irrelevant In Our Research?, R, S. Webster

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

It is argued in this paper that in a culture of ‘performativity’ research into ‘education’ is often avoided. It is observed in many research publications that attention is given to techniques of learning, teaching, management, social equity, identity formation, leadership and delivery of the curriculum, without a justification being offered as to why such instrumental approaches should be regarded as being ‘educational’. Often research quite unproblematically adopts rational-economic justifications couched in terms of ‘efficiency’ and ‘effectiveness’. Such approaches are however identified as nihilistic and not educational (Blake et al., 2000)

The Case For Clumsiness, Michael Thompson, Marco Verweij Jun 2004

The Case For Clumsiness, Michael Thompson, Marco Verweij

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Most climatologists agree that by burning fossil fuels and engaging in other forms of consumption and production we are increasing the amount of greenhouse gases that float around in the atmosphere. These gases, in trapping some of the sun’s heat, warm the earth and enable life. The trouble is, some predict, that if we continue to accumulate those gases, over the course of the new century the average temperature on earth will rise and local climates will change, with possibly catastrophic consequences. Will this indeed happen? If so, should we do something about it? And if yes, what and when? …

Time Series Classification Using Gaussian Mixture Models Of Reconstructed Phase Spaces, Richard J. Povinelli, Michael T. Johnson, Andrew C. Lindgren, Jinjin Ye Jun 2004

Time Series Classification Using Gaussian Mixture Models Of Reconstructed Phase Spaces, Richard J. Povinelli, Michael T. Johnson, Andrew C. Lindgren, Jinjin Ye

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

A new signal classification approach is presented that is based upon modeling the dynamics of a system as they are captured in a reconstructed phase space. The modeling is done using full covariance Gaussian mixture models of time domain signatures, in contrast with current and previous work in signal classification that is typically focused on either linear systems analysis using frequency content or simple nonlinear machine learning models such as artificial neural networks. The proposed approach has strong theoretical foundations based on dynamical systems and topological theorems, resulting in a signal reconstruction, which is asymptotically guaranteed to be a complete …

Multi-Trophic Level Interactions In A Cassava-Maize Mixed Cropping System In The Humid Tropics Of West Africa, F. Schulthess, A. Chabi-Olaye, S. Gounou Jun 2004

Multi-Trophic Level Interactions In A Cassava-Maize Mixed Cropping System In The Humid Tropics Of West Africa, F. Schulthess, A. Chabi-Olaye, S. Gounou

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Multi-trophic level interactions in a mixed crop, involving cassava and maize, were studied in derived-savanna in Benin, West Africa. Two trials were planted, one during the short rainy season two months before onset of the dry season and one during the long rainy season in spring. Key pests under study on maize were the noctuid Sesamia calamistis Hampson and the pyralids Eldana saccharina Walker and Mussidia nigrivenella Ragonot, and on cassava, the exotic mealybug, Phenacoccus manihoti Matile-Ferrero and its encyrtid parasitoid Apoanagyrus lopezi De Santis. Both crops received insecticide treatments to assess the crop loss by a pest species. On …

An Approximate Search Engine For Structure, Huiyuan Shan May 2004

An Approximate Search Engine For Structure, Huiyuan Shan

Dissertations

As the size of structural databases grows, the need for efficiently searching these databases arises. Thanks to previous and ongoing research, searching by attribute-value and by text has become commonplace in these databases. However, searching by topological or physical structure, especially for large databases and especially for approximate matches, is still an art.

In this dissertation, efficient search techniques are presented for retrieving trees from a database that are similar to a given query tree. Rooted ordered labeled trees, rooted unordered labeled trees and free trees are considered. Ordered labeled trees are trees in which each node has a label …

The purpose of this study was also to demonstrate that with the use of technology, the students would better understand the important concepts covered in the social studies unit, as well as be motivated to learn.

Thirty sixth grade students conducted research using wireless laptops to find information about a prominent African-American who has made a positive contribution to our society. The control group created an oral presentation and constructed a replica in the form of a doll to represent their person. …

Parametric Synthesis Of Sign Language, Jerome Allen May 2004

Parametric Synthesis Of Sign Language, Jerome Allen

Theses

The isolation of the deaf community from mainstream society is in part due to the lack of knowledge most hearing people have of sign language. To most, there seems to be little need to learn a language that is spoken by such a small minority unless perhaps a relative is unable to hear. Even with a desire to learn, the task may seem insurmountable due to the unique formational and grammatical rules of the language.

This linguistic rift has led to the call for an automatic translation system with the ability to take voice or written text as input and …

Supply Chain Risk Mitigation, Roshan R. Pai May 2004

Supply Chain Risk Mitigation, Roshan R. Pai

Theses

In recent years, especially post 9/11, there has been an increasing awareness for securing business supply chains against probable disruptions. With globalization and lean inventories, the efficiency of supply chain has greatly enhanced over the years, but at the expense of new vulnerabilities. Supply chain vulnerabilities have resulted in disruptions to the economic stability and security. As a result, risk analysis and mitigation has now grown to become one of the key links to business stabilization. To ensure business continuity, it is necessary to identify key assets (physical and operational) within the supply chain and secure them against probable threats. …

A Kinematic Analysis Of Hand Configurations In Static And Dynamic Fingerspelling, Gillian B. Sherry May 2004

A Kinematic Analysis Of Hand Configurations In Static And Dynamic Fingerspelling, Gillian B. Sherry

Theses

The focus of this study was the investigation of target handshapes in American Sign Language fingerspelling in order to determine whether there was a difference between static canonical structures and structures produced in the context of a movement sequence. This was achieved by measuring the joint angles of a signing hand with an 18-sensor CyberGlove® by Virtual Technologies, Inc.

A discriminant analysis was used to identify targets that occurred at points of minimum angular joint velocity. A multivariate analysis of variance with planned compansons was then applied to these dynamic data along with the static data to test the hypothesis. …

Perceptions From The Principals’ Desks: African American Elementary Principals And Reading Curriculum And Instruction In A Central Florida County, Keva Latrice Mitchell

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This was a collective case study of African American elementary principals in a central Florida county. The study intended to discover through qualitative means, African American elementary principals perceptions of reading curriculum and instruction. More specifically, the study was concerned with discovering and presenting the attitudes, experiences, and beliefs of this specific population of leaders. The African American principal has the unique perception of one who has grown-up and been educated in the midst of the European American dominated system of education, thus making their perceptions of reading curriculum and instruction relevant to gaining additional knowledge in the area of literacy …

Home-School Collaboration And Bullying: An Ecological Approach To Increase Social Competence In Children And Youth, Susan M. Sheridan, Emily D. Warnes, Shannon Dowd May 2004

Home-School Collaboration And Bullying: An Ecological Approach To Increase Social Competence In Children And Youth, Susan M. Sheridan, Emily D. Warnes, Shannon Dowd

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

Bullying and other forms of violence among children and youth is a prevalent concern among educators, psychologists, and families alike. Families and schools represent the primary systems in children's lives, and schools and homes are their primary learning contexts. These ecological contexts provide important frameworks within which development occurs. Healthy development occurs most seamlessly when there are congruent and consistent messages delivered across contexts, and healthy and constructive relationships among them. The development of meaningful partnerships among these systems on behalf of children and youth is particularly important to produce positive, lasting outcomes. Thus, an optimal focus for interventions aimed …
