An Attitudinal Theory Of Excuse In Criminal Law, Peter Westen
An Attitudinal Theory Of Excuse In Criminal Law, Peter Westen
ExpressO
The mother lode of criminal law scholarship is a unitary theory of excuses, that is, a normative account as to why a person who engages in conduct that a criminal statute prohibits ought nevertheless not be blamed for it. After defining "excuse" against commentators who argue that it cannot be coherently defined, and after criticizing competing theories of excuse, I argue that the feature that renders persons normatively blameless -- and, typically, legally blameless, too -- for engaging in conduct that a criminal statute prohibits is the possession of a certain attitude with which he engages in it. A person …

Early Speech And Language Development: A Comparison Of Typically Developing Children To Children With Cleft Palate., Holly Jannice Mcgahey
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Previous research has shown that parent implemented intervention is effective in increasing the speech and language development of children with cleft lip and palate. To further determine the efficacy of this intervention, this study compared the speech and language development of children with CLP, who received parent implemented intervention, with a group of younger, typically developing children, matched for vocabulary size. This study also evaluated the language differences between the mothers of both groups of children. Speech and language assessments were administered to the typically developing children and their mothers at two times to mirror the time of assessment for …

Introduction To Comparative Legal Cultures: The Civil Law And The Common Law On Evidence And Judgment (Oral Presentation Of The Book By Antoine Garapon & Ioannis Papadopoulos, Juger En Amerique Et En France : Culture Judiciaire Française Et Common Law, Ioannis Papadopoulos
Cornell Law Faculty Working Papers
This book is the fruit of a basic idea, namely that comparative law is meaningless if it is regarded as the sole study of juxtaposed legal systems, regardless of their cultural dimension. The book’s main aim is to identify and analyze the basic cultural differences between the two great legal traditions of the West, the Continental and the Anglo-American one, through a thorough examination of the trial, and of judicial institutions more widely, as these are organized in France and the United States. For that purpose, after an introduction to the concept of legal culture and the basic notions of …

Co-Education And Gender: The End Of The Experiment?, Ian Clark
Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)
This article has two inseparable aims: (a) to analyze the relative merits of single-sex and co-educational constructs on self-concept, academic performance and academic engagement; (b) to investigate the manner in which each type of schooling interacts with the individual student; student “peers,” close family, and teachers.

Non-Lexical Conversational Sounds In American English, Nigel Ward
Non-Lexical Conversational Sounds In American English, Nigel Ward
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
This article analyzes the non-lexical conversational sounds (conversational grunts) of English, including such items as uh-huh, un-hn, um, mm, and oh, based primarily on examination of a few hundred occurrences in a corpus of conversations. The data includes extensive phonetic variation, suggesting that these items are best explained, not as fixed words, but as dynamic creations. In particular, the vast majority of these items can be generated by a simple model consisting of 10 component sounds and 2 combining rules. Moreover, each of these component sounds seems to bear some meaning or function which is fairly constant across grunts and …

Killing For Pleasure, Tzachi Zamir
Between the Species
This paper formulates and defends a version of moral vegetarianism. Since eating animals is not causally connected to their death, I begin with analyzing the moral status of consumer actions that do not, taken on their own, harm animals (I). I then formulate a version of moral vegetarianism (II). Three different opponents of moral vegetarianism are then distinguished and criticized (III-VI). I then take up the argument according to which eating animals benefits them (VII). I close with the question of the desirability of collective vegetarianism from the point of view of animals.
Sexing Capitalism: Condoms And Industrial Change, Peter Chua
Sexing Capitalism: Condoms And Industrial Change, Peter Chua
Faculty Publications, Sociology
In the late 1700s, condoms were luxury items for the affluent in Western Europe, but by the 1970s, the US government gave free condoms out to poor women in Third World areas. Moreover condom availability has increased dramatically since the global emergence of the AIDS pandemic in the 1980s, adding to the already fervent social stigmatization and political contentions on morality, sexuality, and wellbeing that condom use brings. This paper focuses on the strategically joint-relationship between manufacturing firms and governments to foster distinct profit-oriented condom social relations and moral-symbolic regimes of sexual cultures. Proposing a sex-situated theory of capitalist firms, …

The Purple Turtle, Dan Tilque
The Purple Turtle, Dan Tilque
Word Ways
The PURPLE TURTLE is a magical beast. With one glance, it turns an ABBEY into an ALLEY, reduces a BULB to PULP, makes a VESSEL into a VASSAL, and converts a MUMMY to a PUPPY. By turning POMP into a BOMB, MONACO becomes a MENACE. And from TAMPA to TEMPE, it turns KODAK into SODAS. It's enough to give an ENGINE ANGINA.

Malaproverbs, Neo-Adages, Wrongerisms
Word Ways
Over the years Word Ways has occasionally published humorous variations of traditional proverbs or conventional phrases. In February 1972 Philip Cohen demonstrated that certain proverbs alter their message if the last few words are removed ("People who live in glass houses shouldn't"). In November 1975 Mary Youngquist and Harry Hazard created new proverbs by removing a phrase and inserting another in an existing one.

At some undetermined stage of my lifelong fascination with spoonerisms. I realize that the genre is ideally suited to visualization. Cruel and Usual Puns, my semi-successful 1991 spoonerism book, was superbly illustrated by top New Yorker cartoonist Arnie Levin. But since then, aside form my own occasional amateur sketches for friends. I haven't fully explored or exploited the potential of this perfect marriage of word and image.
Twin Places And Other Top Anagrams, Rex Gooch
Twin Places And Other Top Anagrams, Rex Gooch
Word Ways
The trigger for this article was finding a twin for a town mentioned by Darryl Francis (in the sense that one, El Canbaro, was a permutation of the letters of the other, Barcelona, W03-277). I thought it might be amusing to see how many twin places existed, as it seemed to be as good as basis for town twinning as the reasons often given for these excuses for mayoral junketing. I was overwhelmed: more than one third (about three-quarters of a million) of all places participate in twins, but also nearly a quarter of a million exist in triplets, and …

Word Ways
When I started grade school in the 1950s, there was a sense of excitement in the air. Television had entered the homes of many Americans, and with it the desire to bring the world into the future. My third grade music teacher, Mr. Underwood, was a typist and an inventor. By day, he taught piano, and by night he typed up ideas for his inventions. One night, he realized that he could come up with many more ideas if he could type faster.

Alphanumerically Truthful Equations
Alphanumerically Truthful Equations
Word Ways
Susan Thorpe's pioneering excursion into alphanumeric arithmetic (WW '04-78) inspired me to look at the flip side of the coin and explore the alphanumerics of verbal equations. This involves adding up the numerical values of their letters using A=1 thru Z=26.* I began with the anagram ELEVEN + TWO = TWELVE + ONE reported by Melvin O. Wellman in the April '48 issue of The Enigma, journal of the National Puzzlers League. This often regarded as the most perfect of all English anagrams. I reported several numero-logological coincidences regarding it in WW '02-308. I now report five more remarkable coincidences: …
