Resolving Automatic Prepositional Phrase Attachments By Non-Statistical Means, Deryle W. Lonsdale, Michael B. Manookin Jan 2004

Resolving Automatic Prepositional Phrase Attachments By Non-Statistical Means, Deryle W. Lonsdale, Michael B. Manookin

Faculty Publications

Prepositional-phrase attachment is a topic of active research in the field of computational linguistics. Properly attaching prepositional phrases to their pertinent constituent proves straightforward for humans, but inferring these attachments in a cognitive modeling system becomes difficult. For example, in the sentence, ‘Ralph threw the frisbee to John,’ the prepositional phrase ‘to John’ will attach to the verb phrase ‘threw’. In another example, ‘Joe saw the dog with fur,’ the prepositional phrase ‘with fur’ will attach directly to the noun phrase ‘the dog.’ Humans would have little difficulty resolving these examples, but for computers this would be difficult.

Reassessing The "Basel-Wittenberg Conflict": Dimensions Of The Reformation-Era Discussion Of Hebrew Scholarship, Stephen G. Burnett Jan 2004

Reassessing The "Basel-Wittenberg Conflict": Dimensions Of The Reformation-Era Discussion Of Hebrew Scholarship, Stephen G. Burnett

Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications

The study of Reformation-era Christian Hebraism has benefited from increased scholarly attention over the past fifty years. Sebastian Münster, Paul Fagius, Wolfgang Capito, and Conrad Pellican have all been the subjects of biographies. Luther scholars have analyzed not only Luther's use of Hebrew but to a lesser extent the Hebrew scholarship of Melanchthon, Bugenhagen, and Goldhahn. Historians of the book trade have provided analytic bibliographies and studies of prominent Christian Hebrew printers, including Heinrich Petri, Thomas Anselm, and Robert Estienne as well as studies of the Hebrew book trade in Augsburg and Basel. The role of Jewish scholars in facilitating …

Investigating Age Factors In Cross-Language Transfer Of Phonological Processing Across English And Chinese Languages, Yan Gu Jan 2004

Investigating Age Factors In Cross-Language Transfer Of Phonological Processing Across English And Chinese Languages, Yan Gu

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The current study compared the reading and phonological performance of younger and older Chinese-speaking children who learned to read English as a second language in Canada. Parallel measures of reading, phonological processing, orthographic processing, and oral language proficiency were administered in English and Chinese to 25 younger children (Grades 1 and 2) and 26 older children (Grades 5 and 6). Phonological processing skill in English and Chinese were intercorrelated and correlated with English reading performance in both age groups. For the younger children, English phonological processing skill was a unique predictor of English reading performance. Conversely, for the older children, …

Face To Face': Rediscovering The Right To Confront Prosecution Witnesses, Richard D. Friedman Jan 2004

Face To Face': Rediscovering The Right To Confront Prosecution Witnesses, Richard D. Friedman

Articles

The Sixth Amendment to the United States Constitution protects the right of an accused 'to confront the witnesses against him'. The United States Supreme Court has treated this Confrontation Clause as a broad but rather easily rebuttable rule against using hearsay on behalf of a criminal prosecution; with respect to most hearsay, the exclusionary rule is overcome if the court is persuaded that the statement is sufficiently reliable, and the court can reach that conclusion if the statement fits within a 'firmly rooted' hearsay exception. This article argues that this framework should be abandoned. The clause should not be regarded …

Banking The Poor, Michael S. Barr Jan 2004

Banking The Poor, Michael S. Barr

Articles

Low-income households often lack access to banking accounts and face high costs for transacting basic financial services through check cashers and other alternative financial service providers. These families find it more difficult to save and plan financially for the future. Living paycheck to paycheck leaves them vulnerable to medical or job emergencies that may endanger their financial stability, and lack of longer-term savings undermines their ability to improve skills, purchase a home, or send their children to college. Additionally, high cost financial services and inadequate access to bank accounts may undermine widely shared societal goals of reducing poverty, moving families …

Rhetoric Or Rights?: When Culture And Religion Bar Girls' Right To Education, Elizabeth Chamblee Burch

Scholarly Works

Women account for almost two-thirds of the world's illiterates. In the year 2000, the World Education Forum met in Dakar, Senegal and set goals to (1) eliminate gender disparities in primary and secondary education by 2005, and (2) achieve gender equality in education by 2015. Two months before 2004, the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) reported that sixty percent of the 128 countries that attended the Dakar Conference would not meet these goals. The report attributed the failure to sharp discrimination against girls in social and cultural practices.

The report failed to mention that social and cultural …

Is A Signed Offer Sufficient To Satisfy The Statute Of Frauds?, Gregory S. Crespi Jan 2004

Is A Signed Offer Sufficient To Satisfy The Statute Of Frauds?, Gregory S. Crespi

Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters

In this article, the author attempts to clarify the law on the issue of whether a signed offer is a “sufficient writing" to satisfy the statute of frauds requirement. The article seeks to demonstrate that much of the confusion among contract law treatises regarding this issue stems from the writers sometimes failing to distinguish clearly between "common law" state statutes of frauds and UCC Section 2-201. Given the large body of case law in support of allowing signed offers to satisfy the common law statute of frauds requirements, the author argues that courts should be more reluctant to interpret UCC …

Standards Of Conduct And Standards Of Review In Corporate Law: The Need For Closer Alignment, Gregory S. Crespi Jan 2004

Standards Of Conduct And Standards Of Review In Corporate Law: The Need For Closer Alignment, Gregory S. Crespi

Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters

This article examines the arguments in support of maintaining a divergence in duty of care law between the articulated negligence standard of conduct and the gross negligence standard of review, with particular emphasis on their application to the corporate fiduciary duty of care context. The author provides a detailed discussion of the arguments presented by Meir Dan-Cohen, while also focusing on articles by Richard Singer, David Phillips, and Melvin Eisenberg. After assessing the existing scholarship justifying divergent standards in the context of corporate law, the author concludes that a single, clearly articulated standard which both defines the scope of permissible …

From Cannibalism To Empowerment: An Analects-Inspired Attempt To Balance Community And Liberty, Sor-Hoon Tan Jan 2004

From Cannibalism To Empowerment: An Analects-Inspired Attempt To Balance Community And Liberty, Sor-Hoon Tan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The Confucian tradition has often been credited with a strong allegiance to the value of community. It recognizes that certain goods might be attained through special forms of human association, but not by any solitary individual. Are such community goods attained at the expense of the liberty of individual members? Philosophers have struggled with the tension between liberty and community since the dawn of Western philosophy. Aristotle complained about the false idea of liberty as "doing what one likes," which is contradictory to the true interests of the polis.2 Such lib- erty, or rather license, is undoubtedly detrimental to any …

Joke-Making Jews /Jokes Making Jews: Essays On Humor And Identity In American Jewish Fiction, Jason Paul Steed Jan 2004

Joke-Making Jews /Jokes Making Jews: Essays On Humor And Identity In American Jewish Fiction, Jason Paul Steed

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Beginning from the premise that humor plays a prominent role in the construction of group and individual identities, as a social phenomenon and a simultaneously alienating and assimilating force, these essays explore and examine humor and its construction of American Jewish identity within the context of various works of American Jewish fiction. Though organized as "chapters," the essays do not build upon one another progressively, nor do they center on a unified thesis; rather, each is written to stand alone; however, each approaches the general subject of humor and identity in American Jewish fiction, and as a collection it is …

A Comparison Of Single And Combined Social Interaction Interventions To Increase The Social Interaction Of Preschool Children In Inclusive Settings, Judith Elizabeth Terpstra Jan 2004

A Comparison Of Single And Combined Social Interaction Interventions To Increase The Social Interaction Of Preschool Children In Inclusive Settings, Judith Elizabeth Terpstra

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Many young children with disabilities are being educated in inclusive preschool settings. Social competence for these children is often less than that of their peers and the typical children in the inclusive setting usually are not aware of appropriate methods for interacting with children with disabilities. Research concerning effective methods to increase the social interactions between children with and without disabilities is needed to ensure successful educational experiences for children with and without disabilities in these settings; This study investigated the difference between the use of a single social interaction strategy and the use of a combined social interaction strategy …

J R R Tolkien's Lecture "On Fairy -Stories": The Qualities Of Tolkienian Fantasy, Clyde Bryan Northrup Jan 2004

J R R Tolkien's Lecture "On Fairy -Stories": The Qualities Of Tolkienian Fantasy, Clyde Bryan Northrup

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Tolkien's 1939 lecture, "On Fairy-stories," is viewed by fantasy critics as a statement of Tolkien's aesthetics, rather than a critical framework for interpreting Tolkienian fantasy. This work will attempt to show that this lecture by Tolkien actually creates a framework for interpretation, the four qualities of Tolkienian fantasy, that will be applied later on to four contemporary fantasies by David Eddings, Roger Zelazny, Stephen R. Donaldson, and J. K. Rowling, along with Tolkien's The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings; After surveying fantasy criticism from George MacDonald's late 19th Century essay to the present, we look at Sir Philip …

Mary Shelly, Emily Bronte, And Christina Rossetti: The Literature Of Disability, Georgia E Standish Jan 2004

Mary Shelly, Emily Bronte, And Christina Rossetti: The Literature Of Disability, Georgia E Standish

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Many scholarly studies have examined illness, sickness, and invalidism in British nineteenth-century fiction. Few have explored these concepts in both fiction and poetry as "disabilities." This study traces the origins of the concept of disability in the poetic and fictional representations in three nineteenth-century key women authors: Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights and her poetry, and Christina Rossetti's "Monna Innominata: A Sonnet of Sonnets" and "Goblin Market." Significant to the early development of the concept of disability is the emergence of the related concept of normalcy in the nineteenth-century. Along with the concept of normalcy are also the …

Cavities On The Cob: Dental Health And The Agricultural Transition In Sonora, Mexico, James Thomas Watson Jan 2004

Cavities On The Cob: Dental Health And The Agricultural Transition In Sonora, Mexico, James Thomas Watson

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This research uses a predictive model based on dental health to test the hypothesis that maize dependence gradually increased among human groups in the Sonoran Desert over the course of the Early Agricultural period (1500 B.C.--A.D. 200). The hypothesis is tested by recording a suite of ten dental observations that correlate with this fundamental change in subsistence on a sample of 246 prehistoric human skeletons dating to the Early Agricultural period recovered from La Playa (SON F:10:3), Sonora, Mexico. The sample is evenly distributed among demographic variables, burial treatments, and location within the site. Erosion of the burials, however, restricted …

A Quantitative Investigation Of American History Software On Middle School Student Achievement Scores, Karla V Kingsley

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to examine whether student use of the Ignite! Early American History software significantly affected student outcome achievement scores on a standards-based assessment. Students in three urban middle schools were divided into experimental and control groups with both groups being taught by the same teacher. Experimental group students used the Ignite! history software as a supplement to their regular American history curriculum, and students in the control group did not use the program. The study also examined how students with limited English proficiency (LEP) and students with special needs scored on the standardized test …

Language, Conflict And Identity: The Hispanic Experience, Jan Henry Oller Jan 2004

Language, Conflict And Identity: The Hispanic Experience, Jan Henry Oller

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis is an attempt to create a theoretical model which could be applied to the study of any situation where a history of ongoing migration and asymmetrical power relationships in constant flux between two or more groups, nation states, or other entities is present. It is the conception and application of a theoretical framework with which to view transnational identity on a different level, one focusing on the historical antecedents of current situations, pan-identities, and language as the main identity marker among transnationals.
