The Corinthian

In this movie, Ray, the lead character, is a Berkley University graduate from the sixties turned corn farmer in Iowa with a wife and one daughter. Ray is afraid of turning into his father. He is afraid that he will live and die and never pursue his dreams. When Ray does decide to pursue his dreams, he does so believing that he is helping others and that he is doing it for someone else, but in the end, it is his own hurt and pain that he ends up reconciling and his own dreams that he fulfills. Teaching Japanese In An American High School: How Japanese Teachers Make Sense Of Their American Students’ Communication Styles, Teppei Kiyosue Jan 2004

Teaching Japanese In An American High School: How Japanese Teachers Make Sense Of Their American Students’ Communication Styles, Teppei Kiyosue

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This qualitative research study explores how Japanese teachers make sense of their American students’ communication styles. I conducted classroom observations in two Japanese classes by two different teachers and interviewed four Japanese teachers at high schools in Cabell County, West Virginia. The results indicate that the American students don’t communicate with others under the pressure of enryo (response to group pressure for conformity) in their Japanese classes. Furthermore, the Japanese teachers usually approve of their American students’ active communication styles without enryo. The results also show that the native Japanese teachers use high-context communication styles frequently in their Japanese classes …

The Advantage Of Steep As A Method To Identify Elementary School Children Who Are At-Risk For Learning Disabilities, Chandra Nease Jan 2004

The Advantage Of Steep As A Method To Identify Elementary School Children Who Are At-Risk For Learning Disabilities, Chandra Nease

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The purpose of the current study was to determine the relationship between the Screening to Enhance Equitable Placement (STEEP) and the Dyslexia Screening Instrument (DSI) to deem STEEP a valuable tool for identifying children who may be at risk for a learning disability or dyslexia. The following research question was examined: What is the concurrent validity of STEEP, as a screening instrument for identifying at risk students for learning disabilities by comparing it to the Dyslexia Screening Instrument? In this study, students in first through fourth grade classrooms at a rural Southeastern Ohio elementary school who were administered STEEP and …

Generation Gap: Explaining New And Emerging Word-Order Phenomena In Mayan-Spanish Bilinguals, Teresa Satterfield, Rusty Barrett Jan 2004

Generation Gap: Explaining New And Emerging Word-Order Phenomena In Mayan-Spanish Bilinguals, Teresa Satterfield, Rusty Barrett

Linguistics Presentations

We investigate asymmetries in the behavior of NP subjects and objects in Sipakapense (Maya) across three generations of Sipakapense-Spanish bilingual speakers. Often, the two languages are typologically classified into separate groups, with SVO word order assumed as the traditional sequence in Spanish, and VSO in Sipakapense. We illustrate that this typological partition is artificial: in Spanish, as in Mayan, VSO can serve as the basic, declarative word order, where the subject maintains its internal-VP position with a neutral interpretation. Both Spanish and Sipakapense obtain the SVO configuration via subject topicalization. Thus, the key factor in the shift from VSO to …

Scripture: Tool Of Patriarchy Or Resource For Transformation?, Sandra Marie Schneiders

Jesuit School of Theology

If feminism is a major resource for the transformation of humanity and history in the direction of wholeness and hope, it is also a serious challenge to organized religion and e specially to Christianity because it calls into question the traditional theology of God and of human beings. But beneath these theological questions lies an even more fundamental issue, namely the question of biblical revelation. Th equestion, in its starkest terms, is whether or not the Bible teaches the maleness of God and the inferiority of women. In other words, is patriarchy divinely revealed and therefore divinely sanctioned? It would …

Process This: Undergraduate Writing In Composition Studies, Nancy C. Dejoy

All USU Press Publications

In Process This, Nancy DeJoy argues that even recent revisions to composition studies, cultural studies, service learning, and social process movements--continue to repress the subjects and methodologies that should be central, especially at the level of classroom practice. Designed to move student discourses beyond the classroom, these approaches nonetheless continue to position composition students (and teachers) as mere consumers of the discipline. This means that the subjects, methodologies, and theory/practice relationships that define the field are often absent in composition classrooms. Arguing that the world inside and outside of the academy cannot be any different if the profession stays the …

Learning By Seeing By Doing: Arithmetic Word Problems, Sylvia Weber Russell, Mark D. Leblanc Jan 2004

Learning By Seeing By Doing: Arithmetic Word Problems, Sylvia Weber Russell, Mark D. Leblanc

Computer Science

"Learning by doing" in pursuit of real-world goals has received much attention from education researchers but has been unevenly supported by mathematics education software at the elementary level, particularly as it involves arithmetic word problems. In this article, we give examples of doing-oriented tools that might promote children's ability to "see" significant abstract structures in mathematical situations. The reflection necessary for such seeing is motivated by activities and contexts that emphasize affective and social aspects. Natural language, as a representation already familiar to children, is key in these activities, both as a means of mathematical expression and as a link …

Barth, Barthians, And Evangelicals: Reassessing The Question Of The Relation Of Holy Scripture And The Word Of God, John D. Morrison Jan 2004

Barth, Barthians, And Evangelicals: Reassessing The Question Of The Relation Of Holy Scripture And The Word Of God, John D. Morrison

Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary (1973-2015)

Karl Barth is often misunderstood regarding his views of Scripture, hence we must survey his "ontology of Holy Scripture" and then discuss various misinterpretations of Barth's understanding of the nature of Scripture. Such men as David Mueller, Otto Weber, Arnold Come and T. F. Torrance and Evangelicals as C. Van Til, G. H. Clark, C. F. H. Henry and Bernard Ramm are shown to be deficient in their analysis of Barth's view of Scripture, especially as regards a bifurcation of the text and the Word of God.

Morpheme Acquisition In Second Language Learners, Timothy Andrew Schuwerk Jan 2004

Morpheme Acquisition In Second Language Learners, Timothy Andrew Schuwerk

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study explored morpheme acquisition in learners of English as a Second Language (ESL). Specifically, it looked at the development of eight selected individuals from Korea over the course of an intensive 8-week instruction program and tracked their acquisition of three specific English morphemes: indefinite articles used with singular count nouns, progressive -ing forms, and third person -s markers. The individuals were given an assessment test to place them at the correct level within the program prior to their selection for the study. The participants provided four sets of data in the form of writing samples at fixed intervals during …

Evaluation Of School-Based Arts Education Programmes In Australian Schools, Jennifer Bryce, Juliette Mendelovits, Adrian Beavis, Joy Mcqueen, Isabelle Adams

Program monitoring and evaluation

This report presents evaluations of four Australian school-based arts programmes: Arts@Direk (SA), Boys’ Business (NT), Indigenous Music Education Programme (NT), and SCRAYP – Youth Arts with an Edge (Vic). Arts@Direk and SCRAYP provided a focus on drama, while Boys’ Business and Indigenous Music Education Programme (IMEP) concentrated on music. There was a range of ages from Year 4 to Year 10 and a diverse range of backgrounds amongst the participating students. The study investigated the impact of each arts programme on students’ academic progress, engagement with learning and school attendance. It also considered which attributes of arts programmes were of …

Certainty Categorization Model, Elizabeth D. Liddy, Noriko Kando, Victoria L. Rubin Jan 2004

Certainty Categorization Model, Elizabeth D. Liddy, Noriko Kando, Victoria L. Rubin

School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship

We present a theoretical framework and preliminary results for manual categorization of explicit certainty information in 32 English newspaper articles. The explicit certainty markers were identified and categorized according to the four hypothesized dimensions – perspective, focus, timeline, and level of certainty. One hundred twenty one sentences from sample news stories contained a significantly lower frequency of markers per sentence (M=0.46, SD =0.04) than 564 sentences from sample editorials (M=0.6, SD =0.23), p= 0.0056, two-tailed heteroscedastic t-test. Within each dimension, editorials had most numerous markers per sentence in high level of certainty, writer’s point of view, and future and present …
