The Understanding And Utilization Of Occupational Therapy Services By Medical Doctors In Acute Hospital Settings, Naina Jamani Jun 2004

The Understanding And Utilization Of Occupational Therapy Services By Medical Doctors In Acute Hospital Settings, Naina Jamani

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to determine what medical doctors working in the Canadian healthcare system know about occupational therapy, and if this understanding of occupational therapy is deemed valuable by the rate of referrals generated by these practitioners. This study will examine the relationship between physician's knowledge level and referrals to occupational therapy. The study instrument was a survey that consisted of eight questions, seven multiple choice and one open-ended response. The study took approximately five minutes to complete. A total of forty surveys were distributed at three different acute hospital settings. A total of fourteen or thirty-five …

Analysis Of Phytoplankton Nutrient Limitation In Farmington Bay And The Great Salt Lake, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh, Amy M. Marcarelli Jun 2004

Analysis Of Phytoplankton Nutrient Limitation In Farmington Bay And The Great Salt Lake, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh, Amy M. Marcarelli

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

The Great Salt Lake is bordered to the south and east by a growing metropolitan area that contributes high nutrients to Farmington Bay. This large bay is eutrophic, and there is concern that continued increases in effluents from the Salt Lake City area could extend to impact the much larger, and currently less productive, Gilbert Bay. This study focused on determining how nutrient supplies might limit, and therefore control, algal populations in Farmington Bay and Gilbert Bay at different salinities. We tested both short and long-term responses of algal growth using laboratory nutrient addition bioassays in the summer and fall …

Environmental Education And Metaethics, Owen Goldin Jun 2004

Environmental Education And Metaethics, Owen Goldin

Philosophy Faculty Research and Publications

Contrā Dale Jamieson, the study of the metaethical foundations of environmental ethics may well lead students to a more environmentally responsible way of life. For although metaethics is rarely decisive in decision making and action, there are two kinds of circumstances in which it can play a crucial role in our practical decisions. First, decisions that have unusual features do not summon habitual ethical reactions, and hence invite the application of ethical precepts that the study of metaethics and ethical theory isolate and clarify. Second, there are times in which the good of others (including organisms and systems in the …

No Harm, No Rule: The Muddy Waters Of Agency Policy Statements And Judicial Review Under The Missouri Administrative Procedure Act, Christopher Pieper Jun 2004

No Harm, No Rule: The Muddy Waters Of Agency Policy Statements And Judicial Review Under The Missouri Administrative Procedure Act, Christopher Pieper

Missouri Law Review

The volume and variety of actions state and federal agencies take to implement a given regulatory scheme sometimes makes it difficult for courts to determine the difference between informal agency policy statements and formal agency rules. The Missouri Supreme Court dealt with this issue in the context of a challenge to a state agency’s implementation of the federal Clean Water Act. The court held that Missouri’s impaired waters list was an agency policy statement, rather than a rule, and that the challenge to the list was not ripe. This Note will examine the potential impact of the court’s decision on …

Information Markets, Administrative Decisionmaking, And Predictive Cost-Benefit Analysis, Michael Abramowicz Jun 2004

Information Markets, Administrative Decisionmaking, And Predictive Cost-Benefit Analysis, Michael Abramowicz

University of Chicago Law Review

FutureMAP, a project of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), was an experiment to determine whether information markets could improve Defense Department decisionmaking. Information markets generate predictions from the prices of securities created for that purpose rather than primarily for investment. In this Article, Professor Abramowicz concludes that information markets could discipline administrative agency predictions, but only if technical hurdles such as the danger of manipulation can be overcome. The objective predictions of well-functioning information markets exhibit many of the same virtues as cost-benefit analysis. Both approaches can help to overcome cognitive errors and thwart interest group manipulation. The …

Funding Sources For Key Water Quality Strategies, Craig, M, Matt Craig

PREP Reports & Publications

The New Hampshire Estuaries Project (NHEP) Management Plan, published in 2000, sets forth three goals related to estuarine water quality in the State’s coastal watershed, and twenty Water Quality Action Plans to implement these goals. The goals direct the NHEP to: 1) ensure that New Hampshire’s estuarine waters and tributaries will meet standards forpathogenic bacteria including fecal coliform, E. coli, and Enterocci; 2) ensure that NewHampshire’s estuarine waters, tributaries, sediments, and edible portions of fish, shellfish, other aquatic life, and wildlife will meet standards for priority contaminants such as metals, PCBs, PAHs, and oil and grease; and, 3) ensure that …

Designing A Work-Friendly Tax System, Jonathan Barry Forman Jun 2004

Designing A Work-Friendly Tax System, Jonathan Barry Forman

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

[Excerpt] "Taxes tend to influence individual choices between labor and leisure, and high effective marginal tax rates on earned income tend to discourage work. In particular, the empirical evidence shows that high effective marginal tax rates tend to discourage work by low- and moderate-income individuals, especially those that are trying to work their way out of the welfare system. Unfortunately, the current federal tax system often imposes its highest effective marginal tax rates on just those individuals. The purpose of this paper is to suggest some simple ways to reduce those high effective marginal tax rates. One approach would be …

Science-Based Organic Farming: A Resource For Educators, Charles A. Francis, Mindi Schneider, Brad Kindler Jun 2004

Science-Based Organic Farming: A Resource For Educators, Charles A. Francis, Mindi Schneider, Brad Kindler

Publications from the Center for Applied Rural Innovation (CARI)

Organic farming is an important and growing part of the United States food system. The organic sector has grown by at least 20% per year for the past two decades, and currently shows no indication of slowing in this growth. There is increasing consumer concern about where and how food is produced, and people want to be assured access to safe and healthy food products. Interest and concern about food security, and discussion about the merits of a local food system as compared to the vulnerable globalized marketplace are also becoming increasingly important. In Nebraska we have only limited local …

Nebraska’S Water: Perceptions And Priorities, John C. Allen, Rebecca J. Vogt, Randolph L. Cantrell

Publications from the Center for Applied Rural Innovation (CARI)

Water has always been an important resource to rural Nebraska. This resource has become more scarce during the last few years amid a continuing drought throughout many counties of the state. Do rural Nebraskans feel the drought is over in their area? What priority do they place on various uses of water? Do they feel the quality or quantity of their household water supply has changed during the past ten years? If so, what has affected it?

This report details 2,915 responses to the 2004 Nebraska Rural Poll, the ninth annual effort to understand rural Nebraskans’ perceptions. Respondents were asked …

Strategies For Enhancing The Scholarly Productivity Of Engineering Technology Educators, Abi Aghayere Jun 2004

Strategies For Enhancing The Scholarly Productivity Of Engineering Technology Educators, Abi Aghayere

Presentations and other scholarship

Scholarship is now a requirement for promotion and tenure at most institutions with Engineering Technology (ET) programs. ET faculty that have previously focused only on teaching are now required to demonstrate evidence of scholarly activity on an annual basis. To underscore the importance of the scholarship issue, the Engineering Technology Council (ETC) of ASEE states in its 2003-2006 Strategic Plan’s Goal # 5: “The ETC will develop guidelines and promote appropriate scholarship for engineering technology educators.” Many ET educators sincerely want to engage in scholarly activities, but lack the experience in this arena because of the non-existence of the scholarship …

The Dependence Of All-Atom Statistical Potentials On Structural Training Database, Chi Zhang, Song Liu, Hongyi Zhou, Yaoqi Zhou Jun 2004

The Dependence Of All-Atom Statistical Potentials On Structural Training Database, Chi Zhang, Song Liu, Hongyi Zhou, Yaoqi Zhou

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

An accurate statistical energy function that is suitable for the prediction of protein structures of all classes should be independent of the structural database used for energy extraction. Here, two high-resolution, low-sequence-identity structural databases of 333 α-proteins and 271 β-proteins were built for examining the database dependence of three all-atom statistical energy functions. They are RAPDF (residue-specific all-atom conditional probability discriminatory function), atomic KBP (atomic knowledge-based potential), and DFIRE (statistical potential based on distance-scaled finite ideal-gas reference state). These energy functions differ in the reference states used for energy derivation. The energy functions extracted from the different structural …

What Legal Scholars Can Learn From Law And Economics, Anthony Ogus Jun 2004

What Legal Scholars Can Learn From Law And Economics, Anthony Ogus

Chicago-Kent Law Review

The starting point of this Article is Richard Posner's statement of regret (in 1975) that, in terms of legal scholarship, "normative analysis vastly preponderates over positive," and that this can be corrected by the economic analysis of law. I consider that the positive, predictive contribution of law and economics is still undervalued. Lawyers, practitioners and academics, have much to learn from economic analysis because so often they fail to understand the nature of the interaction between law and market phenomena. This Article explores three areas of analysis to justify this contention: the interplay between public and private incentive systems to …
