Jordan's Military In Mine Action, Cisr Jmu Jun 2004

Jordan's Military In Mine Action, Cisr Jmu

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

Jordan is a country rich in history and beauty. Throughout the years, with the increase of tensions in the Middle East, Jordan has been forced to protect its borders. As a result, Jordan has become a major actor in the mine action community and has taken a different approach by promoting the use of its military for demining and its non-governmental organizations (NGOs) for rehabilitation and mine awareness.

Nhep Monitoring Plan 2004, Version 4- 6/30/04, Trowbridge, P, Phil Trowbridge

PREP Reports & Publications

The NHEP Management Plan presents a series of goals, objectives, and specific actions designed to improve, protect, and enhance the environmental quality of the state’s estuaries, and outlines a process for implementing the Plan’s most critical actions (NHEP, 2000). Measuring the effectiveness of these actions in achieving NHEP goals is an essential part of implementation that will be achieved through a suite of environmental and administrative indicators. This Monitoring Plan describes the methods and data for the indicators that will be used to answer the following question accurately and unambiguously: Are the goals and objectives of the Management Plan being …

Anabolic Agents: Adjuncts To Nutrition Support, Jane M. Gervasio

Scholarship and Professional Work – COPHS

Anabolic agents as adjuncts to nutrition support therapy have been used to improve malnutrition and establish anabolism. Growth hormone, insulin-like growth factor, and anabolic steroids have been studied for their potential to reverse the catabolic process and promote anabolism. This paper reviews several anabolic agents and their possible role in nutrition support therapy.

Why It Is Essential To Teach About Mental Health Issues In Criminal Law (And A Primer On How To Do It), Richard E. Redding Jun 2004

Why It Is Essential To Teach About Mental Health Issues In Criminal Law (And A Primer On How To Do It), Richard E. Redding

Working Paper Series

Studies consistently show a high prevalence of mental disorders among criminal defendants. Forensic mental health issues thus arise frequently in the criminal justice system and are commonly encountered by prosecutors, defense attorneys, and judges—much more so than some criminal law doctrines (e.g., necessity, duress, impossibility) routinely taught in criminal law courses. Yet rarely are students taught about mental illness, how to represent mentally ill clients, adjudicative competence, the mental health needs of various offender groups and how these unmet needs may contribute to criminal behavior, or the use of mental health mitigation evidence at sentencing. If taught at all, such …

Deconstructing Development, Ruth E. Gordon, Jon H. Sylvester Jun 2004

Deconstructing Development, Ruth E. Gordon, Jon H. Sylvester

Working Paper Series

Whether it is being praised or excoriated, defended or condemned, the concept of development shapes and dominates our thinking about the Third World. Indeed development has evolved into an essentially incontestable paradigm with such a hold on our collective imaginations, that it is almost impossible to think around or beyond it. This article, however, interrogates development to its very core, demonstrating that although it is presented as something that is universal, natural and inevitable, in truth it is part of the Western political and cultural imagination. Moreover, the interlocking ideological assumptions that support this paradigm are inherently hierarchical and by …

Stress And Adult Health: Impact Of Time Spent In Paid And Unpaid Work, And Its Division In Families, Roderic Beaujot, Robert Anderson Jun 2004

Stress And Adult Health: Impact Of Time Spent In Paid And Unpaid Work, And Its Division In Families, Roderic Beaujot, Robert Anderson

PSC Discussion Papers Series

Based on a sample representative of the Canadian population aged 30-59, this paper assesses the impact of time spent on productive activities, and various types of activities, on stress and health. The main finding is that the number of hours spent is a better predictor of stress than is the type of activity. Moreover, the effects of paid and unpaid work are additive rather than multiplicative. That is, the more people work, regardless of what they are doing, the more likely they are to feel stressed. Still, working irregular hours and non-traditional family models are also associated with poorer health …

Family Level Clustering Of Childhood Mortality In Kenya, D. Walter Rasugu Omariba Jun 2004

Family Level Clustering Of Childhood Mortality In Kenya, D. Walter Rasugu Omariba

PSC Discussion Papers Series

Recent research on child mortality suggests that despite overall declines in mortality levels, mortality could remain relatively high due to a clustering of deaths in certain pockets of the population. Using data from the 1998 demographic and health survey (DHS) of Kenya this study examines child death clustering within families. The analysis first examines how known distant determinants of child mortality including socioeconomic and socio-cultural factors affect child survival, and how their effect is modified by proximate determinants of mortality including biodemographic and household environmental conditions. This is then followed by a control for family random effects to establish whether …

The U.S. Department Of Defense Humanitarian Demining Training Center: A Center Of Excellence, Lloyd Carpenter, Paul Arcangeli, Rodney Robideau

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

Humanitarian mine action (HMA) is a field known for its paradigm shifts. Just as technological advances create more efficient and less expensive alternatives to old products and methodologies, emerging technologies offer newer and safer ways to detect landmines. Integrating these advances into the HMA community and thereby the training curriculum, is one challenge faced by the staff of the U.S. Department of Defense Humanitarian Demining Training Center (HDTC).

Stages Of Change In Anxiety: Psychometric Properties Of The University Of Rhode Island Change Assessment (Urica) Scale., David J A Dozois, Henny A Westra, Kerry A Collins, Tak S Fung, Jennifer K F Garry

Psychology Publications

Readiness for change is increasingly cited as an important variable in the health behaviours literature, yet there remains a dearth of research related to this construct in mental health. This study examined the psychometric properties of the University of Rhode Island Change Assessment (URICA) scale in two samples. In Study 1 (n = 252), undergraduates completed the URICA and were administered measures of hopelessness, the consequences of worry, self-esteem, anxious symptomatology, and social desirability. The reliability and validity of the URICA were generally supported, although the goodness-of-fit with the intended subscales was only moderate. The Precontemplation, Contemplation and Maintenance subscales …

Summary Of Freshwater Monitoring Programs In New Hampshire's Coastal Watershed, Trowbridge, P, Phil Trowbridge

PREP Reports & Publications

The New Hampshire Estuaries Project (NHEP) is part of the US Environmental Protection Agency’s National Estuary Program, which is a joint local/state/federal program established under the Clean Water Act with the goal of protecting and enhancing nationally significant estuarine resources. The NHEP uses a Monitoring Plan to track changes in the estuarine environment as a result of the NHEP’s efforts. Up to this point, the Monitoring Plan has focused exclusively on conditions in the estuaries. The purpose of this report is to evaluate the feasibility of including water quality data from the freshwater portion of New Hampshire’s coastal watershed in …

Multisensory Integration Sites Identified By Perception Of Spatial Wavelet Filtered Visual Speech Gesture Information, Daniel E. Callan, Jeffery A. Jones, Kevin Munhall, Christian Kroos, Akiko M. Callan, Eric Vatikiotis-Bateson Jun 2004

Multisensory Integration Sites Identified By Perception Of Spatial Wavelet Filtered Visual Speech Gesture Information, Daniel E. Callan, Jeffery A. Jones, Kevin Munhall, Christian Kroos, Akiko M. Callan, Eric Vatikiotis-Bateson

Psychology Faculty Publications

Perception of speech is improved when presentation of the audio signal is accompanied by concordant visual speech gesture information. This enhancement is most prevalent when the audio signal is degraded. One potential means by which the brain affords perceptual enhancement is thought to be through the integration of concordant information from multiple sensory channels in a common site of convergence, multisensory integration (MSI) sites. Some studies have identified potential sites in the superior temporal gyrus/sulcus (STG/S) that are responsive to multisensory information from the auditory speech signal and visual speech movement. One limitation of these studies is that they do …

Access And Affordability: Rural Nebraskans’ View Of Health Care, John C. Allen, Rebecca J. Vogt, Randolph L. Cantrell

Publications from the Center for Applied Rural Innovation (CARI)

The availability, cost and quality of health care services are important issues to rural Nebraskans. How available are these services and how satisfied are they with them? Do they have health insurance? Have they experienced any medical hardships during the past year?

This report details 2,915 responses to the 2004 Nebraska Rural Poll, the ninth annual effort to understand rural Nebraskans’ perceptions. Respondents were asked a series of questions about health care services. For all questions, comparisons are made among different respondent subgroups, i.e., comparisons by age, occupation, region, etc. Based on these analyses, some key findings emerged:

• The …

Early Head Start: Identifying And Serving Children With Disabilities, Carla Peterson, Shavaun Wall, Helen Raikes, Ellen E. Kisker, Mark E. Swanson, Judith Jerald, Jane B. Atwater, Wei Qiao

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

Early Head Start (EHS) is a comprehensive, two-generation program that provides services to low-income families with children under the age of 3 years. As part of their mandate, staff members of EHS programs collaborate with other service providers in their local communities, including Part C and childcare providers. The incidence of disabilities among low-income children was tracked as part of the EHS Research and Evaluation Project. The incidence of indicators of disabilities (or potential disabilities) was extremely high (87%) among these very young children living in poverty; however, only 99 participating families (4.7% of the sample) received Part C services. …

Algorithmic Fusion Of Gene Expression Profiling For Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma Outcome Prediction, Qiuming Zhu, Hongmei Cui, Kahai Cao, Wing C. Chan

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Many different methods and techniques have been investigated for the processing and analysis of microarray gene expression profiling datasets. It is noted that the accuracy and reliability of the results are often dependent on the measurement approaches applied, and no single measurement so far is guaranteed to generate a satisfactory result. In this paper, an algorithmic fusion approach is presented for extracting genes that are predictive to clinical outcomes (survival-fatal) of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma on a set of microarray data for gene expression profiling. The approach integrates a set of measurements from different aspects in terms of the discrepancy …
