The Changing Of The Guard Or : Moving From Paper To "E" With A New Financial Model, Johan Engelbrecht

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

The Changing of the Guard, or Moving from Print to “E” with a new Financial Model. Johan Engelbrecht, Univ of Stellenbosch During the past decade academic libraries all over the world have been faced with escalating costs which made budgeting for information resources, and especially academic journals, a nightmare. Libraries in South Africa were no exception, and the matter was made worse by the continuous weakening of the South African currency against major overseas currencies such as the Dollar and the Euro. In 2002 alone the South African Rand weakened by as much as 40% against the American Dollar. This …

A Graph Theoretic Approach To Testing Associations Between Disparate Sources Of Functional Genomic Data, Raji Balasubramanian, Thomas Laframboise, Denise Scholtens, Robert Gentleman Jun 2004

A Graph Theoretic Approach To Testing Associations Between Disparate Sources Of Functional Genomic Data, Raji Balasubramanian, Thomas Laframboise, Denise Scholtens, Robert Gentleman

Bioconductor Project Working Papers

The last few years have seen the advent of high-throughput technologies to analyze various properties of the transcriptome and proteome of several organisms. The congruency of these different data sources, or lack thereof, can shed light on the mechanisms that govern cellular function. A central challenge for bioinformatics research is to develop a unified framework for combining the multiple sources of functional genomics information and testing associations between them, thus obtaining a robust and integrated view of the underlying biology.

We present a graph theoretic approach to test the significance of the association between multiple disparate sources of functional genomics …

Perceived Benefits Of And Barriers To Continuing Education Among Hospital Employed Registered Nurses, Jacqueline A. Dean

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to expand on the body of knowledge related to the reasons far participation and non-participation in continuing education (CE). The study examined the relationship between Registered Nurses (RNs) perceived benefits of and perceived barriers to CE and their reported participation in CE programs. The Health Belief Model is the theoretical framework utilized for this study, with the variables of perceived benefits and perceived barriers in particular. This was a secondary analysis of data collected in a descriptive correlational study where RNs employed in two acute care hospitals in the Midwest were surveyed. Descriptive statistics …

Choosing Gatekeepers: The Financial Statement Insurance Alternative To Auditor Liabilty, Lawrence A. Cunningham Jun 2004

Choosing Gatekeepers: The Financial Statement Insurance Alternative To Auditor Liabilty, Lawrence A. Cunningham

ExpressO

Positioned in a lively current debate concerning how to design auditor incentives to optimize financial statement auditing, this Article presents the more ambitious financial statement insurance alternative. This breaks from the existing securities regulation framework to draw directly on insurance markets and law. Based on upon an evaluation of major structural and policy-related features of the concept, the assessment prescribes a framework to permit companies, on an experimental-basis and with investor approval, to use financial statement insurance as an optional alternative to the existing model of financial statement auditing backed by auditor liability.

The financial statement insurance concept, pioneered by …

The Lessons Stem Cells Provide Vis-À-Vis Patents: Working Towards An International/Universal Patent Regime. , Charles F. Hall

ExpressO

Biotechnology research has much to promise human society. Beyond the obvious benefits of being able to clone rare animal species or potentially to revitalize extinct species , there are many practical applications that are beneficial to human society directly. Rare blood types might be created from specialized stem cells. The tragedies of Christopher Reeve and others like him who have suffered paralysis from spinal cord trauma may be reversible by using stem cells to replenish damaged and severed nerve cells in the spinal column. The dire shortage of organs for those needing transplants can be reduced by creating an organ …

Comparisons Of Mortality And Pre-Discharge Respiratory Outcomes In Small-For-Gestational-Age And Appropriate-For-Gestational-Age Premature Infants., Puneet Sharma, Kathleen Mckay, Ted S Rosenkrantz, Naveed Hussain Jun 2004

Comparisons Of Mortality And Pre-Discharge Respiratory Outcomes In Small-For-Gestational-Age And Appropriate-For-Gestational-Age Premature Infants., Puneet Sharma, Kathleen Mckay, Ted S Rosenkrantz, Naveed Hussain

SoM Articles

BACKGROUND: There are differences in the literature regarding outcomes of premature small-for-gestational-age (SGA) and appropriate-for gestational-age (AGA) infants, possibly due to failure to take into account gestational age at birth.

OBJECTIVE: To compare mortality and respiratory morbidity of SGA and AGA premature newborn infants.

DESIGN/METHODS: A retrospective study was done of the 2,487 infants born without congenital anomalies at

RESULTS: Controlling for GA, premature SGA infants were at a higher risk for mortality (Odds ratio 3.1, P = 0.001) and at lower risk of respiratory distress syndrome (OR = 0.71, p = 0.02) than AGA infants. However multivariate logistic regression …
