Rui Barbosa And The Argument For Teaching The Natural Sciences In The Brazilian Primary School Of The Xix Century, Karl M. Lorenz
Education Faculty Publications
The paper discusses the ideas of Rui Barbosa on the importance of teaching science in the primary schools of nineteenth-century Brazil. Barbosa was one of the great parliamentarians of his time and one of Brazil’s most vocal advocates of educational reform in the nineteenth century. In 1882, Barbosa was directed to provide a written assessment of the1878 educational reform of Minister Leonçio de Carvalho. In the document that resulted, Barbosa states his rationale for why and how the natural sciences should be taught in the primary school. This paper relates Barbosa’s ideas on science teaching and argues that he was …

The Nonprofit Hospital: A Call For New National Guidance Requiring Minimum Annual Charity Care To Qualify For Federal Tax Exemption, Gabriel O. Aitsebaomo
Campbell Law Review
This article begins with an examination of the origin of the federal tax exemption of the tax-exempt hospital, the current statutory frame-work for federal tax exemption, and the community benefits standard. Next, the article discusses the rationale for the exemption and the regulatory changes in the standards of exemption that paved the way for the current movement away from charity care by the tax-exempt hospital and the need for new national guidance. Thereafter, the article discusses some state initiatives aimed at making the tax-exempt hospital more accountable. Finally, the article recommends that the Internal Revenue Service (the "Service") issue a …
Was Arthur Andersen Different? An Empirical Examination Of Major Accounting Firm Audits Of Large Clients, Theodore Eisenberg, Jonathan R. Macey
Was Arthur Andersen Different? An Empirical Examination Of Major Accounting Firm Audits Of Large Clients, Theodore Eisenberg, Jonathan R. Macey
Cornell Law Faculty Publications
Enron and other corporate financial scandals focused attention on the accounting industry in general and on Arthur Andersen in particular. Part of the policy response to Enron, the criminal prosecution of Andersen eliminated one of the few major audit firms capable of auditing many large public corporations. This article explores whether Andersen’s performance, as measured by frequency of financial restatements, measurably differed from that of other large auditors. Financial restatements trigger significant negative market reactions and their frequency can be viewed as a measure of accounting performance. We analyze the financial restatement activity of approximately 1,000 large public firms from …
An Evaluation Of The Principles Of A Successfully Operating Transit Oriented Development As Conceptually Applied To The Ambassador Way Transit Station, Tammye Davis
Theses (Pre-2016)
Through the implementation of a state of the art light rail system, Houston has relinquished its title as the largest city in the US without a fixed guide way transit system. METRORail has been designed with the intent to enhance environmental, social, and economic development. The call for these improvements is dictated in part by the fact that Houston is among the top ten worst cities in terms of traffic congestion. This is in some measure due to lower-density, vast residential and commercial development patterns that force people to drive more frequently and over longer distances. However, in recent times …
Activation Of The Phosphatidylinositol 3-Kinase/Akt Pathway Contributes To Survival Of Primary Epithelial Cells Infected With The Periodontal Pathogen Porphyromonas Gingivalis, Özlem Yilmaz, Thomas Jungas, Philippe Verbeke, David M. Ojcius
Activation Of The Phosphatidylinositol 3-Kinase/Akt Pathway Contributes To Survival Of Primary Epithelial Cells Infected With The Periodontal Pathogen Porphyromonas Gingivalis, Özlem Yilmaz, Thomas Jungas, Philippe Verbeke, David M. Ojcius
All Dugoni School of Dentistry Faculty Articles
Porphyromonas gingivalis, an important periodontal pathogen, infects primary gingival epithelial cells (GECs). Despite the large number of bacteria that replicate inside the GECs, the host cell remains viable. We demonstrate that P. gingivalis triggers rapid and reversible surface phosphatidylserine exposure through a mechanism requiring caspase activation. However, after 1 day of infection, the bacteria no longer induce phosphatidylserine externalization and instead protect infected cells against apoptosis. Infection exerts its effect at the level of mitochondria, as P. gingivalis also blocks depolarization of the mitochondrial transmembrane potential and cytochrome c release. Interestingly, protein kinase B/Akt is phosphorylated during infection, which can …
The Effect Of Humor On Elderly Well-Being, Mary M. Boone
The Effect Of Humor On Elderly Well-Being, Mary M. Boone
Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations
The main objectives of this study were to identify the connections between the sense of humor and well-being in the elderly population, examine the benefits of humor as a coping mechanism, explore the role of humor as a preventative and therapeutic measure, and to attempt to gain a greater understanding of these connections. Humor has been the focus of study within many different domains, including psychology and medical research (immunology, pain management, cardiology, and psychoneuroimmunology), but there is a distinct lack of theory and research within the sociological realm on this topic (except in social psychology), especially involving the aging …

Childcare Arrangements As Related To Perceptions Of Job Stress Work-Family Conflict And Parenting Stress, Joy B. Wright
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
Sixty-nine male and 40 female full-time employees of the Ford Motor company completed a survey assessing the relationships between satisfaction with childcare (i.e., overall satisfaction with childcare, satisfaction with cost, satisfaction with provider, satisfaction with hours of operation, and satisfaction with location) and overall stress, job stress, work-family conflict, and parenting stress. Although most respondents were satisfied with the child's provider, and moderately satisfied with their childcare arrangements overall and with the location of their childcare, the typical respondent was dissatisfied with the cost of childcare and neither satisfied nor dissatisfied with the hours of operation. Job stress was correlated …
The New Deal In Art: The Fine Arts Project And The Evolution Of Abstract Expressionism, Sarah Coon Stoops
The New Deal In Art: The Fine Arts Project And The Evolution Of Abstract Expressionism, Sarah Coon Stoops
Institute for the Humanities Theses
The formation of the Works Progress Administration (WPA) as part of Roosevelt's New Deal, in conjunction with the Depression and World War II, can be credited with changing the face of international art of the twentieth century. The majority of the artists who were later to be known as Abstract Expressionists participated in the Fine Arts Project (FAP) branch of the WPA in New York throughout the 1930s. This government support of the artists gave them a chance to commit to painting as a career, and their painting styles evolved drastically during this time. Through this support, the connections that …

Interactive Land Use Vrml Application Using Servlet Assist, Suresh Chitithoti
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
The integration of VRML and Servlet technologies has the potential to revolutionize web-based simulation visualization. The Interactive Land Use VRML Application (ILUVA) uses Java Servlets enabling one to perform urban planning by taking a virtual land area and add buildings, roadways, landscaping, and other features. The Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML) is a web-based technology for specifying and delivering interactive three-dimensional visualizations over a browser. The Java Servlet technology offers several powerful capabilities such as user authentication, session management, database connectivity for maintaining several possibly simultaneous user sessions, and dynamically generated VRML. Save and restore capabilities for any applications are …
An Empirical Study Of Highly Personal Topics Involved In Self-Disclosure, Alicia Monique Mathews
An Empirical Study Of Highly Personal Topics Involved In Self-Disclosure, Alicia Monique Mathews
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
Self-disclosure refers to what individuals reveal about themselves to others. This topic has been a focus of research by social psychologists, communication scientists and others for several decades. The current study aims to contribute to research in this area by examining the topics of self-disclosure of college students. Archival data previously collected from college students were used. Research participants were asked to recall a highly personal experience when answering questions about their self-disclosure behaviors dealing with the targets of mother, father, same-sex friend and dating partner. The study developed a taxonomy of topics that were identified by college students as …
Euthanasia: An Exploration Of Public Opinion, Debra M. Babylon
Euthanasia: An Exploration Of Public Opinion, Debra M. Babylon
Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations
The acceptance of euthanasia is examined using the 1972-2002 GSS cumulative dataset. The dataset contains a total of 43,698 respondents. The euthanasia question, "Should a terminally ill patient be allowed the right to die?" was asked beginning in 1977. The number of respondents answering the euthanasia question totals 22,039. The independent variables age, race, gender, political view, religious affiliation, and education were reviewed to assess their impact on support of euthanasia. Additionally, in order to test the "slippery slope" hypothesis, the abortion question, "Should abortion be allowed under any circumstance?" was added to the independent variable list. Cross tabulation was …
Anthropogenic Lead Deposition And Four National Parks In Poland As Determined By Lead Isotope Ratios, Shannon Simcoe
Anthropogenic Lead Deposition And Four National Parks In Poland As Determined By Lead Isotope Ratios, Shannon Simcoe
OES Theses and Dissertations
Polluted soils are recognized by having high concentrations of heavy metals, including Pb. Partitioning of metals in geochemical fractions, by sequential chemical extractions, may indicate whether a metal has been recently deposited in the soil. While concentration levels alone cannot distinguish between natural and anthropogenic Pb, studies have demonstrated that anthropogenic pollution is accurately recorded by specific Pb isotope signatures, which differ from natural Pb isotopes. The objective of this project was to use 206Pb/207Pb and 206Pb/204Pb isotope ratios to differentiate between the anthropogenic Pb input and the naturally occurring Pb in four national …

Emotional Intelligence And Coping, Veena A. Nair
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
Emotional intelligence (EI) is the set of abilities involved in emotion processing and regulation. The current study examined the relationship between trait EI and general intelligence, personality, and coping. It also investigated whether trait EI was a significant predictor of problem focused and emotion focused coping strategies after controlling for general intelligence and personality, and examined whether trait EI predicted self-reported outcome of a stressful situation and academic achievement. Participants were 106 college students who were individually administered the two subtest version of Wechsler's Abbreviated Scale of lntelligence (WASI), the Schutte Self-Report Inventory of EI (SSRI), the NEO Personality Inventory-Revised …
Gender And Hiv Risk Behavior In China, Yelan Guo
Gender And Hiv Risk Behavior In China, Yelan Guo
Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations
Gender differences in prevalence of HIV risk behaviors are well established. Gender differences in major causes leading to HN risk behaviors are much less researched in China. Using data from a large and population-based survey conducted in 2003, in southwestern China, this paper examined gender-specific correlates of HIV risky drug using and sexual behaviors in the general population. Both bivariate and multivariate analyses were conducted for males and females separately. The results suggest that men are more likely to inject drugs and share needles than women while women are more likely to exhibit RN risk sexual behaviors than men. Socio-economic …

Effects Of Ultrasonic And Hand-Activated Scaling On Tactile Sensitivity In Second Year Dental Hygiene Students In A Clinical Setting, Miranda Beeson
Dental Hygiene Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine if time spent instrumenting class III, IV, and V calculus clients, either hand-activated or with an ultrasonic scaler, decreased the tactile sensitivity of the clinician, and if change occurs in index finger, middle finger, and thumb tactile sensitivity prior to and following 45-minute scaling episodes. This study also afforded an opportunity to determine if tactile sensitivity changed in the same dental hygiene students over a one-year period of time by comparing data with that of a similar study conducted in the fall of 2002. Random assignment and a sample size of 25 …
The Future Of German Labor Relations: Lessons German Unions Can Learn From American Failures, Cara Waldman
The Future Of German Labor Relations: Lessons German Unions Can Learn From American Failures, Cara Waldman
Connecticut Journal of International Law
On June 28, 2003, IG Metall, the German metalworkers union representing over 2.5 million workers in East and West Germany,' announced its biggest defeat since 1954. Thousands of metalworkers in East Germany, who went out on strike four weeks prior, returned to work.2 They were negotiating for a thirty-five-hour work week, gradually phased in by 2009, which would bring East German workers on par with their counterparts in West Germany.
Negotiations between IG Metall and the employer associations over a shorter work week began in January 2003.4 Employers took a hard line and negotiations went nowhere, even after IG Metall …
