Factors Affecting School-Based Speech-Language Pathologists’ Use Of Language Assessment Practices With Bilingual Children, Lena Gloria Caesar

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to identify the assessment procedures and practices of school-based speech-language pathologists (SLPs) employed in the state of Michigan. A survey method was used to gather information from 409 SLPs regarding the assessment procedures used for assessing both their bilingual students, as well as their monolingual English-speaking students. The survey also gathered information regarding perceptions about language proficiency, professional training, and bilingual assessment products. In order to analyze factors related to their use of recommended practices, the study investigated the relationship between selected demographic, caseload, and work-setting variables, and the type of bilingual assessment methods …

The Major Subunit Of The Toxin-Coregulated Pilus Tcpa Induces Mucosal And Systemic Immunoglobulin A Immune Responses In Patients With Cholera Caused By Vibrio Cholerae O1 And O139, Muhammad Asaduzzaman, Edward T. Ryan, Manohar John, Long Hang, Ashraful I. Khan, A. S. G. Faruque, Ronald K. Taylor

Dartmouth Scholarship

Diarrhea caused by Vibrio cholerae is known to give long-lasting protection against subsequent life-threatening illness. The serum vibriocidal antibody response has been well studied and has been shown to correlate with protection. However, this systemic antibody response may be a surrogate marker for mucosal immune responses to key colonization factors of this organism, such as the toxin-coregulated pilus (TCP) and other factors. Information regarding immune responses to TCP, particularly mucosal immune responses, is lacking, particularly for patients infected with the El Tor biotype of V. cholerae O1 or V. cholerae O139 since highly purified TcpA from these strains has not …

Clinical guidelines and a consultation and referral immunology clinic standardized care practices. Measurable improvements in the quality of care were noted in multiple areas. Flowchart completion rates rose from 44% to 100%; medication adherence assessment rose from 82% …

Latino Immigrant Perceptions About The U.S. Police: An Exploratory Study, Griselda Aldrete Aug 2004

Latino Immigrant Perceptions About The U.S. Police: An Exploratory Study, Griselda Aldrete

Student Work

New population trends by Latino immigrants have caused much debate in the field of criminal justice. Lack of research and literature on this growing population has left the justice system looking for ways to properly tap into the Latino population. Among the many areas that have been overlooked is one about how Latino immigrants adapt to their new life upon arriving in the United States. In addition, no study has ever explored how immigrants deal with the criminal justice system, especially the perceptions they have about the U.S. police. This thesis is an attempt to fill this void in research …

Ideological Criticism Of The Social Construction Of Gay Advertising, Dawn M. Cripe

Student Work

Mainstream advertising in the gay media has become more prevalent in the past few years as marketers discovered an untapped source of profits. This study examined mainstream advertising in the gay media and its ability to connect with its targeted audience as a diverse consumer group. The study looked through the lens of Berger and Luckmann’s (1966) theory of The Social Construction of Reality and the ideological perspective that gays and lesbians are an oppressed group. The objective of the study was to determine whether or not these advertisements presented a worldview that reinforced stereotypes of gays and lesbians in …

A Comparison Of Moth Diversity And Abundance Along An Altitudinal Gradient In Monteverde, Costa Rica, August 2004, Katie Swartz Aug 2004

A Comparison Of Moth Diversity And Abundance Along An Altitudinal Gradient In Monteverde, Costa Rica, August 2004, Katie Swartz

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Costa Rica has high moth (Lepidoptera) diversity, with relatively little known about its distribution (Hanson 2000). Insects tend to decrease in richness and abundance along an altitudinal gradient (Brehm and Fiedler 2003). Lepidopterans are important indicators of environmental health, important herbivores, vital prey species, and a large draw for the country’s main source of income, ecotourists. The purpose of this study was to compare moth diversity and abundance at varying altitudes. Moths were trapped using an ultra violet light and a sheet at three different altitudes (1530 m, 1639 m, and 1759 m) over six nights between July 26th and …

Theological Dualism In The Poetry Of George Herbert., Carolyn Elizabeth Woodruff Aug 2004

Theological Dualism In The Poetry Of George Herbert., Carolyn Elizabeth Woodruff

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Theological dualism is a primary element in George Herbert's poetry. Poems such as "The Flower," "Affliction I," "Affliction V," "The Banquet" and "Love III" illustrate the necessary tension inherent in the polarity of theological dualism. Abstractions such as joy, grief, pleasure, pain, birth, and death form the framework for Herbert's illustration of the Christian pilgrim in search of divine communion. For the searching Christian to understand one abstract principle, its opposite must be equally explored. In this journey to comprehend the duality of the Christian life, one reaches spiritual enlightenment and communion with God. Although several critics have recognized the …

Pastoral Risk Management In Southern Ethiopia: Observations From Pilot Projects Based On Participatory Community Assessments, D. Layne Coppock, Solomon Desta, Seyoum Tezera, Rancis K. Lelo

Environment and Society Faculty Publications

The Borana pastoral system has come under increasing pressure as human populations grow and per capita availability of resources declines. Livestock exhibit large, periodic die-offs that threaten wealth accumulation and food security. Several types of interventions may improve risk management here. For example, there may be opportunity for some pastoralists to diversify their livelihoods. Here we report on a community-based process involving pilot projects begun since 2000. We have embraced Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) and Action Research (AR) as tools for investigation and empowerment of local people. Full PRAs were conducted for semi-settled communities, located near towns, to identify priority …

Epidemiological Burden Of Depression And Its Impact On Adherence To Oral Hypoglycemic Agents And Related Economic Outcomes In Patients With Type 2 Diabetes, Iftekhar D. Kalsekar

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Presence of depression in patients with type 2 diabetes may affect their adherence to oral hypoglycemics and consequently glycemic control and economic outcomes. These potential effects may be more significant when one considers that depression is highly prevalent in patients with diabetes. This study involved two phases. Phase one of the study examined the epidemiological relationship between depression and type 2 diabetes. Phase two of the study examined the impact of depression on patterns of use and adherence to oral hypoglycemics in newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes patients. Impact of depression on expenditures related to type 2 diabetes and overall …

Operant Conditioning In Older Adults With Alzheimer's Disease, Adam P. Spira Aug 2004

Operant Conditioning In Older Adults With Alzheimer's Disease, Adam P. Spira

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Behavioral interventions are commonly implemented to manage agitation in older adults with dementia. However, the extent to which operant conditioning can occur in this population is unclear. The present study used a button-pressing task to evaluate the sensitivity of the responding of individuals with probable Alzheimer's disease to changes in schedules of reinforcement. Results indicate that operant conditioning can occur in older adults with AD. Specifically, three participants with AD exhibited responding that was highly sensitive to a transition from a fixed interval schedule to an extinction schedule. One participant's responding was sensitive to a more subtle transition. Comparison data …

The Law Of Privacy In Canada (Student Edition) By Barbara A. Mcisaac, Rick Shields, Kris Klein (Toronto: Thomson Carswell, 2004), John D. Gregory

Canadian Journal of Law and Technology

To help lawyers advise their clients on their rights and obligations in this complex and novel field, the various legal publishers have offered an array of guides and textbooks analyzing the law of privacy. Thomson/Carswell turned for its book to the national law firm of McCarthy Tétrault. Three McCarthy lawyers (Barbara McIsaac, Rick Shields, and Kris Klein) are listed as authors of The Law of Privacy in Canada, and several others have contributed significant parts of the text, and they have done a creditable job in pulling it all together. It seems to be the only thorough and up-to-date analysis …

Group Judgments: Deliberation, Statistical Means, And Information Markets, Cass R. Sunstein Aug 2004

Group Judgments: Deliberation, Statistical Means, And Information Markets, Cass R. Sunstein

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

How can groups elicit and aggregate the information held by their individual members? There are three possibilities. Groups might use the statistical mean of individual judgments; they might encourage deliberation; or they might use information markets. In both private and public institutions, deliberation is the standard way of proceeding; but for two reasons, deliberating groups often fail to make good decisions. First, the statements and acts of some group members convey relevant information, and that information often leads other people not to disclose what they know. Second, social pressures, imposed by some group members, often lead other group members to …

Conflicted Interests, Contested Terrain: Journalism Ethics Codes Then And Now, Lee Wilkins, Bonnie Brennen Aug 2004

Conflicted Interests, Contested Terrain: Journalism Ethics Codes Then And Now, Lee Wilkins, Bonnie Brennen

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

By analyzing ethics codes, a professional statement of what constitutes good work, this essay links codes to a theory of culture and history. It considers two early journalism ethics codes and assesses the latest New York Times code in the light of philosophical theory. The paper suggests that professional tensions outlined in Good Work are reified in the Times code—and that history and culture may be less supportive of a positive outcome of this struggle over values than the insights of psychology might suggest.

Institutionalizing Gender And Sexuality In A Call-In Radio Advice Program: A Characterization Of Loveline, Meagan P. Storey Aug 2004

Institutionalizing Gender And Sexuality In A Call-In Radio Advice Program: A Characterization Of Loveline, Meagan P. Storey

English Theses & Dissertations

Previous studies of advice characterized it as a discourse in which authority is afforded to the giver by virtue of being asked for advice. As an authoritative discourse, advice sets the standards by which interlocutors base their judgments of normalcy. The consequences of these judgments are multiplied when advice is given as part of public, institutional talk, such as with radio call-in programs. This thesis examines how the authoritative discourse of global advice (public, commercial advice) is used to construct and normalize human experiences, specifically gender and sexuality. This study is based on an analysis of ten audio-taped episodes, each …

The Jurisdiction Of Justice: Two Conceptions Of Political Morality, Larry Alexander Aug 2004

The Jurisdiction Of Justice: Two Conceptions Of Political Morality, Larry Alexander

San Diego Law Review

My topic in this essay is a major fault line within normative theory. More precisely, it is a major fault line within that part of a normative theory that deals with the content of our moral obligations to others. When I refer to moral obligations here, I am referring to those acts that morality demands of us such that it permits force or its threat to be employed to secure those acts. Moral obligations as I use the term are thus candidates for legal enforcement. I argue that much of what is debated within liberal political/moral theory can be usefully …

Toward Reasonable Limitations On The Exercise Of General Jurisdiction, Walter W. Heiser Aug 2004

Toward Reasonable Limitations On The Exercise Of General Jurisdiction, Walter W. Heiser

San Diego Law Review

General jurisdiction is one of the most controversial aspects of the current jurisprudence of personal jurisdictions. General jurisdiction refers to a state's exercise of personal jurisdiction over a nonresident defendant in a lawsuit not arising out of or related to the defendant's contacts with the forum. General jurisdiction is particularly controversial in international litigation involving foreign defendants who do business in the United States. This article examines the potential limitations on the exercise of general jurisdiction in the context of international civil litigation.
