The Stoic Theory Of Implanted Preconceptions, Matt Jackson-Mccabe Aug 2004

The Stoic Theory Of Implanted Preconceptions, Matt Jackson-Mccabe

Religious Studies Faculty Publications

A number of late Stoic sources describe either ethical concepts or a supposed universal belief in gods as being innate in the human animal. Though Chrysippus himself is known to have spoken of "implanted preconceptions" (ε¨μφυτοιπρολν´ψειζ) of good and bad, scholars have typically argued that the notion of innate concepts of any kind would have been entirely incompatible with his theory of knowledge. Both Epictetus' notion of innate concepts of good and bad and the references to an innate belief in gods by other philosophers of the Roman era are thus generally held to be later developments, probably owing to …

Two gadolinium(III) chelates, GdNP-DO3A (1-methlyene-(p-NitroPhenol)-1,4,7,10-tetraazacycloDOdecane-4,7,10-triAcetate) and GdNP-DO3AM (1-methlyene(p-NitroPhenol)-1,4,7,10-tetraazacycloDOdecane-4,7,10-triacetAMide), containing a single nitrophenolic pendant arm plus either three acetate or three amide pendant arms were synthesized and characterized. The properties of the gadolinium, terbium, and dysprosium complexes of these ligands were examined as a function of pH. The extent and mechanism of the changes in water relaxivity with pH of each gadolinium complex was found to differ substantially for the two complexes. The water relaxivity of Gd(NP-DO3A) increases from 4.1 …

The Genomes Of Recombinant Inbred Lines: The Gory Details, Karl W. Broman Aug 2004

The Genomes Of Recombinant Inbred Lines: The Gory Details, Karl W. Broman

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

Recombinant inbred lines (RILs) can serve as powerful tools for genetic mapping. Recently, members of the Complex Trait Consortium have proposed the development of a large panel of eight-way RILs in the mouse, derived from eight genetically diverse parental strains. Such a panel would be a valuable community resource. The use of such eight-way RILs will require a detailed understanding of the relationship between alleles at linked loci on an RI chromosome. We extend the work of Haldane and Waddington (1931) on twoway RILs and describe the map expansion, clustering of breakpoints, and other features of the genomes of multiple-strain …

Mythcon 35 - Bridges To Other Worlds: Thirty-Five Years Of Mythopoeic Scholarship, The Mythopoeic Society

Mythcon Programs

Mythcon 35's theme focuses on both the Pursuit of mythopoeic scholarship over the past 35 years, and on the image of the bridge in fantasy literature: bridges between fantasy and other literature; influence of fantasy on mainstream art forms; between artists, literary forms, or between text and reader. The work and interests of our Guests of Honor, the Inklings (especially Tolkien, Lewis, and Williams), and other fantasy authors are, of course, always topics at a Mythcon.

Attachment And Depression Differentially Influence Nicotine Dependence Among Male And Female Undergraduates: A Preliminary Study, Dennis E. Mcchargue, Lee M. Cohen, Jessica W. Cook Aug 2004

Attachment And Depression Differentially Influence Nicotine Dependence Among Male And Female Undergraduates: A Preliminary Study, Dennis E. Mcchargue, Lee M. Cohen, Jessica W. Cook

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The authors surveyed a convenience sample of 208 undergraduate students who reported that they smoked cigarettes. The primary hypothesis they tested was whether gender predicted nicotine dependence. They further tested whether depression and attachment would mediate or moderate this relationship. Hierarchical regression analyses with social desirability and smoking stage of change entered as covariates indicated that women exhibited greater nicotine dependence than men did (p < .01). Lower attachment scores fully mediated this relationship, whereas elevated depression scores moderated the relationship. These findings suggest that depression and the inability to bond with peers may promote nicotine dependence among young female students.

The Impact Of Health Information And Women In The Work Force On Aggregate Meat Demand, Christiane Schroeter, Ken Foster Aug 2004

The Impact Of Health Information And Women In The Work Force On Aggregate Meat Demand, Christiane Schroeter, Ken Foster

Agribusiness

Over the past few decades, U.S. meat consumption patterns have changed. Changes in food consumption patterns can be the result of changing demographic characteristics, changing lifestyles, increasing health awareness, and nutritional concerns. Prior research suggests that these factors have significant influence on the demand for meat (Capps and Schmitz; Kinnucan, Hsia, and Jackson). The recent interest in low carbohydrate diets and the association with increased red meat consumption is an anecdotal example of this phenomenon.

The Geographic Distribution Of Breast Cancer Incidence In Massachusetts 1988 To 1997, Adjusted For Covariates., T Joseph Sheehan, Laurie Dechello, Martin Kulldorff, David I. Gregorio, Susan Gershman, Mary Mroszczyk

SoM Articles

BACKGROUND: The aims of this study were to determine whether observed geographic variations in breast cancer incidence are random or statistically significant, whether statistically significant excesses are temporary or time-persistent, and whether they can be explained by covariates such as socioeconomic status (SES) or urban/rural status? RESULTS: A purely spatial analysis found fourteen geographic areas that deviated significantly from randomness: ten with higher incidence rates than expected, four lower than expected. After covariate adjustment, three of the ten high areas remained statistically significant and one new high area emerged. The space-time analysis identified eleven geographic areas as statistically significant, seven …

Promoting Diversity: Recruitment, Selection, Orientation, And Retention Of International Students, Murat Tas Aug 2004

Promoting Diversity: Recruitment, Selection, Orientation, And Retention Of International Students, Murat Tas

Theses & Dissertations

The number of international students attending U.S. higher teaming institutions has decreased over the past decade from 40 percent to 30 percent. These students are an important resource for the U.S. and their native countries in terms of education, culture, and economy. Differences between international and domestic students currently enrolled in a private university were assessed using a new American College of Testing Survey of Student Opinion combined with a sociocultural adaptation scale. Those analyzed results were incorporated into a customized 18 question survey and interview process to assess international and domestic students who had not graduated. These analyzed assessments …
