Seasonal Habitat Use And Selection Of Chukars In West Central Idaho, Andrew J. Lindbloom, Kerry P. Reese, Peter Zager
Seasonal Habitat Use And Selection Of Chukars In West Central Idaho, Andrew J. Lindbloom, Kerry P. Reese, Peter Zager
Western North American Naturalist
We examined radio-marked Chukar (Alectoris chukar) habitat use and selection in west central Idaho during spring and summer of 1995 and 1996. Use of habitats also was compared with abundance and distribution of yellow starthistle (Centaurea solstitialis), an exotic species that is increasingly abundant in Chukar habitats. During summer Chukars used areas of southeast aspect 12% less (P = 0.002) and areas of northwest aspect 11% more (P = 0.008) than in spring. Chukars also used areas that averaged 9% steeper slopes (P < 0.001) and 83 m lower elevations (P = 0.054) in summer than in spring. Shrub cover …

Fleas (Siphonaptera) In Nests Of Voles (Microtus Spp.) In Montane Habitats Of Three Regions Of Utah, Glenn E. Haas, James R. Kucera
Western North American Naturalist
As a parallel study of a survey of fleas of trapped small mammals in montane southern Utah, we removed 77 adult fleas from 12 of 13 nests of voles (Microtus longicaudus, M. montanus and M. richardsoni) collected from montane meadows in the Abajo and La Sal Mountains, the Markagunt Plateau and Pine Valley Mountains, and the Uinta Mountains, May 1991–July 2002. Six species and subspecies of fleas parasitic on Microtus spp. were found, 1–3 species in each nest. Three specimens of the ubiquitous deer mouse (Peromyscus spp.) flea Aetheca wagneri (Baker) were also found. We collected the …

Studying Effects Of Primary Care Physicians And Patients On The Trade-Off Between Charges For Primary Care And Specialty Care Using A Hierarchical Multivariate Two-Part Model, John W. Robinson, Scott L. Zeger, Christopher B. Forrest
Studying Effects Of Primary Care Physicians And Patients On The Trade-Off Between Charges For Primary Care And Specialty Care Using A Hierarchical Multivariate Two-Part Model, John W. Robinson, Scott L. Zeger, Christopher B. Forrest
Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers
Objective. To examine effects of primary care physicians (PCPs) and patients on the association between charges for primary care and specialty care in a point-of-service (POS) health plan.
Data Source. Claims from 1996 for 3,308 adult male POS plan members, each of whom was assigned to one of the 50 family practitioner-PCPs with the largest POS plan member-loads.
Study Design. A hierarchical multivariate two-part model was fitted using a Gibbs sampler to estimate PCPs' effects on patients' annual charges for two types of services, primary care and specialty care, the associations among PCPs' effects, and within-patient associations between charges for …

A Hierarchical Multivariate Two-Part Model For Profiling Providers' Effects On Healthcare Charges, John W. Robinson, Scott L. Zeger, Christopher B. Forrest
Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers
Procedures for analyzing and comparing healthcare providers' effects on health services delivery and outcomes have been referred to as provider profiling. In a typical profiling procedure, patient-level responses are measured for clusters of patients treated by providers that in turn, can be regarded as statistically exchangeable. Thus, a hierarchical model naturally represents the structure of the data. When provider effects on multiple responses are profiled, a multivariate model rather than a series of univariate models, can capture associations among responses at both the provider and patient levels. When responses are in the form of charges for healthcare services and sampled …

Bayesmendel: An R Environment For Mendelian Risk Prediction, Sining Chen, Wenyi Wang, Karl Broman, Hormuzd A. Katki, Giovanni Parmigiani
Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers
Several important syndromes are caused by deleterious germline mutations of individual genes. In both clinical and research applications it is useful to evaluate the probability that an individual carries an inherited genetic variant of these genes, and to predict the risk of disease for that individual, using information on his/her family history. Mendelian risk prediction models accomplish these goals by integrating Mendelian principles and state-of-the art statistical models to describe phenotype/genotype relationships. Here we introduce an R library called BayesMendel that allows implementation of Mendelian models in research and counseling settings. BayesMendel is implemented in an object--oriented structure in the …

Social Work Burnout And Supportive Supervision, Kathryn L. Jarl
Social Work Burnout And Supportive Supervision, Kathryn L. Jarl
Theses and Graduate Projects
It is widely agreed that social work has an emotional and stressful load that can lead to social worker burnout. Burnout needs to be clearly defined and the different variables causing stress leading to burnout need to be fully understood in order to implement appropriate preventative strategies. Burnout is defined as the emotional depletion felt from a continuous drain on one's personal reserves. Burnout has three different components: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and lack of personal accomplishment. The findings suggest that the type of supervision has an impact on social worker burnout. Supervision is divided into its three functions: administrative, educational, …

A Study Of Life Events And Psychological Well-Being Among Older Persons In Hong Kong : The Role Of Self-Esteem, Coping And Locus Of Control, Kwok Hung, Billy She
Lingnan Theses
The present study investigates to what extent the life events, which includes self-perceived health, self-esteem, internal locus of control and coping effectiveness as indicators, could explain the occurrence of positive affect and depression amongst these elderly persons. The relationships between life events, self-esteem-level, internal locus of control, coping effectiveness, and psychological well-being among older persons (aged 60 or above) in Hong Kong are examined. Eight pilot study cases have been carried out in order to test for the validity of the research instrument. One hundred and three elderly respondents were successfully interviewed face-to-face from three main estates in Tseung Kwan …
