John Duggan Oral History, John Duggan, Courtney Tollison

Furman University Oral Histories

Video interview with John Duggan, Greenville attorney, and 1969 graduate of Furman University. Mr. Duggan was very involved in student activism and the Southern Student Organizing Committee during his time as a Furman student. He begins the interview talking about growing up, and the influences that framed his way of thinking about politics, race, and religion. Mr. Duggan shares many stories about student life on Furman's new campus in the mid to late 1960's. He praises Ernie Harrill and Betty Alverson, shares anecdotes, and talks about being one of the first volunteers with CESC. Mr. Duggan discusses student activism on …

Analyses Of The Spring Dust Storm Frequency Of Northern China In Relation To Antecedent And Concurrent Wind, Precipitation, Vegetation, And Soil Moisture Conditions, Xiaodong Liu, Zhi-Yong Yin, Xiaoye Zhang, Xuchao Yang Aug 2004

Analyses Of The Spring Dust Storm Frequency Of Northern China In Relation To Antecedent And Concurrent Wind, Precipitation, Vegetation, And Soil Moisture Conditions, Xiaodong Liu, Zhi-Yong Yin, Xiaoye Zhang, Xuchao Yang

Environmental and Ocean Sciences: Faculty Scholarship

The relationships between the spring (March–May) dust storm frequency (DSF) of northern China, gridded precipitation based on gauge observations, wind velocity at different geopotential heights, satellite-measured land vegetation index, and grid box soil moisture data during 1982–2001 are examined using correlation analysis and singular value decomposition methods. The results show that the spring DSF time series has strong positive correlations with the upwind wind velocity but strong negative correlations with the antecedent summer (June–August) and annual (June of the prior year to May of the current year) precipitation and soil moisture anomalies, as well as with the spring vegetation condition …

Photovoltaics: Disaster And Energy Security Applications, Florida Solar Energy Center, William Young Aug 2004

Photovoltaics: Disaster And Energy Security Applications, Florida Solar Energy Center, William Young

FSEC Energy Research Center®

The modernization of our lives with the use of electronic devices has contributed to a steadily increasing dependence on electric power. The degree of importance of electricity is temporarily highlighted with any type of power outage, whether caused by an accident, a natural disaster or a terrorist attack. A disaster can leave many people without adequate medical services, potable water, electrical service and communications.

There is a value in applying photovoltaics (solar electric) to create disaster-resistant buildings and communities, which is to reduce losses and improve quality of life. Photovoltaics provide a viable source of electric power for energy security …

Mergemaid: R Tools For Merging And Cross-Study Validation Of Gene Expression Data, Leslie Cope, Xiaogang Zhong, Elizabeth S. Garrett-Mayer, Giovanni Parmigiani Aug 2004

Mergemaid: R Tools For Merging And Cross-Study Validation Of Gene Expression Data, Leslie Cope, Xiaogang Zhong, Elizabeth S. Garrett-Mayer, Giovanni Parmigiani

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

Cross-study validation of gene expression investigations is critical in genomic analysis. We developed an R package and associated object definitions to merge and visualize multiple gene expression datasets. Our merging functions use arbitrary character IDs and generate objects that can efficiently support a variety of joint analyses. Visualization tools support exploration and cross-study validation of the data, without requiring normalization across platforms. Tools include “integrative correlation” plots that is, scatterplots of all pairwise correlations in one study against the corresponding pairwise correlations of another, both for individual genes and all genes combined. Gene-specific plots can be used to identify genes …

Chemical Genomics In Yeast, Charles Brenner Aug 2004

Chemical Genomics In Yeast, Charles Brenner

Dartmouth Scholarship

Four recent 'chemical genomic' studies, using genome-scale collections of yeast gene deletions, have presented complementary approaches to identifying gene-drug and pathway-drug interactions. Many drugs have unknown, controversial or multiple mechanisms of action. Four recent 'chemical genomic' studies, using genome-scale collections of yeast gene deletions that were either arrayed or barcoded, have presented complementary approaches to identifying gene-drug and pathway-drug interactions.
