The bill would have created an authority with power to provide rural hospitals with the ability to self-ensure. The bill would have allowed emergency facilities to limit liability associated with doctors who are independent contractors. The bill would have also restricted recovery from each defendant based on apportionment of liability rather than the usual joint and several liability schemes. The bill failed after a standoff on an amendment to cap non-economic damages.

Relationship Between Plasma Angiotensinii, Leptin And Arterial Blood Pressure, Awdah M. Al-Hazimi, Ahmad Y. Syiamic
Saudi Medical Journal
OBJECTIVE: Obesity and hypertension are 2 closely associated conditions and obesity probably predisposed to hypertension. The mechanism of the association between obesity and hypertension is not clear. The aim of the present study was to clarify the relationship between blood pressure (BP), body mass index (BMI), serum angiotensinII (AGII) and serum leptin levels and to investigate the relation between serum AGII and leptin. This study also aimed to rule out if there is a difference in serum AGII and leptin levels between lean and obese hypertensive females. METHODS: We measured fasting serum AGII and leptin levels in 16 normotensive lean …

The second in a series exploring the services people with developmental disabilities receive from community rehabilitation providers (CRPs). Despite recent ideological emphasis on work, the majority of CRPs continued to offer non-work programs and a substantial proportion of the people they served were involved in those programs. Overall, the findings raise questions about CRP commitment to community integration.

Improving Public Policy Advocacy Through The Effective Use Of Data, Michelle L. Doyle
Journal of Catholic Education
The focus for most consumers of federal education program services is the end product. Of concern to these customers ”“ students, teachers, and principals ”“ are the quality of the service, the timeliness of the service delivery, and the relevance of the services to the particular need. To ensure that federal education programs can be effective for children attending private schools, it is critical to be actively involved in the legislative process. This article explores an attempt to change and improve a federal education program for Catholic and other private school participants, highlighting the key role in the lobbying process …

The survival of female Anopheles gambiae s.s. mosquitoes inside two village house types (grass-thatched and iron-roofed) was studied in relation to diet and ambient indoor microclimatic conditions. Two batches of 20-30, 1-day-old laboratory-bred mosquitoes were maintained inside cages in the grass-thatched (n = 2) and iron-roofed (n = 2) houses and fed daily, one group on 10% glucose and the other on human blood. Throughout the experiments, indoor temperature and relative humidity of the houses were recorded, and mortality of mosquitoes monitored daily until all had died. The experiments were replicated thrice. There was no significant variation in the overall …

A decade after the death of the Prophet Joseph Smith and his brother Hyrum, the message of the Restoration continued to breathe new spiritual life into thousands who were part of scattered Israel, and the Hawaiians were no exception. The call to gather had go forth: "Gather ye out from among the nations, from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. Send forth my elders of my church unto the nations, which are afar off; unto the islands of the sea" (D&C 133:7-8). After the Saints had been exiled from Nauvoo in 1846 and had migrated …
Extending The Role Of Associative Learning Processes In Nicotine Addiction., Rick A. Bevins, Matthew I. Palmatier
Extending The Role Of Associative Learning Processes In Nicotine Addiction., Rick A. Bevins, Matthew I. Palmatier
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Compulsive smoking is a worldwide public health problem. Although research has confirmed the importance of associative learning processes in nicotine addiction, therapies targeting nicotine-associated cues still have a high relapse rate. Most theories conceptualize nicotine as an 'outcome' that reinforces behaviors and/or changes the affective value of stimuli. Albeit important, this view does not capture the complexity of associative processes involved in nicotine addiction. For example, nicotine serves as a conditional stimulus acquiring new appetitive/affective properties when paired with a non-drug reward. Also, nicotine functions as an occasion setter that participates in higher-order associative processes that likely permit a more …

Individual And Social Influences On Ethnic Identity Among Latino Young Adults, Lenna L. Ontai-Grzebik, Marcela Raffaelli
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Building on prior Latino ethnic identity research, this study had three goals: describe age-related trends in ethnic identity among young adults, examine relations among ethnic identity and individual factors, and explore the impact of family and peer socialization on ethnic identity. The participants (two hundred 19-to 30-year-olds; mean age = 22.5) completed self-report surveys sent to Latino undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in four midwestern institutions of higher education. The findings suggest individual factors are strong predictors of ethnic identity during early adulthood; respondents who were younger, high on Latino orientation, spent more time in the United States, and whose …

Mega-Sporting Events In Developing Nations: Playing The Way To Prosperity?, Victor Matheson, Robert Baade
Mega-Sporting Events In Developing Nations: Playing The Way To Prosperity?, Victor Matheson, Robert Baade
Economics Department Working Papers
Supporters of mega-sporting events such as the World Cup and Olympics claim that these events attract hoards of wealthy visitors and lead to lasting economic benefits for the host regions. Developing countries have become increasingly vocal in demanding a share of the economic benefits of these international games. The specialized infrastructure and operating expenses required to host these events, however, can be substantial. Independent researchers have found that boosters’ projections of the economic impact of sporting events exaggerate the true economic impact of these competitions, and these events are an even worse investment for developing countries than for industrialized nations.
