Department of Medicine Publications

Background and Purpose-Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ is a crucial molecule in atherogenesis because it is associated with metabolic risk factors such as obesity and diabetes and also plays a key role in subcellular metabolism of arterial wall macrophage foam cells. Genetic variation in PPARG has been associated with metabolic and cardiovascular end points. Methods-We investigated the relationship between 2 common PPARG polymorphisms, namely P12A and c.1431C>T, and carotid atherosclerosis in a sample of 161 Canadian aboriginal people. Dependent variables were carotid intima media thickness (IMT), assessed using B-mode ultrasonography, and total carotid plaque volume (TPV), assessed using 3D ultrasound. …

The Importance Of Care Irrespective Of Cure: The Daily Living Realities And The Service Experiences Of Families With Children With Complex Mental Health Problems, Nick Coady

Partnerships for Children and Families Project

This report summarizes the results of in-depth interviews conducted in the Summer of 2001 with parents from 12 families that had children who were or had been involved with an intensive, community-based service for children with complex mental health problems. This study had a dual focus: (a) to learn about the daily living realities of families with children who have complex mental health problems, and (b) to learn about families’ experiences with the mental health service. Qualitative analysis of the interviews yielded themes pertaining to each of these two areas of focus. The themes related to daily living realities paint …

Payment For Egg Donation And Surrogacy, Bonnie Steinbock Sep 2004

Payment For Egg Donation And Surrogacy, Bonnie Steinbock

Philosophy Faculty Scholarship

This article examines the ethics of egg donation. It begins by looking at objections to noncommercial gamete donation, and then takes up criticism of commercial egg donation. After discussing arguments based on concern for offspring, inequality, commodification, exploitation of donors, and threats to the family, I conclude that some payment to donors is ethically acceptable. Donors should not be paid for their eggs, but rather they should be compensated for the burdens of egg retrieval. Making the distinction between compensation for burdens and payment for a product has the advantages of limiting payment, not distinguishing between donors on the basis …

Reconsidering The Auricular Surface As An Indicator Of Age At Death, Daniel L. Osborne, Tal L. Simmons, Stephen P. Nawrocki Sep 2004

Reconsidering The Auricular Surface As An Indicator Of Age At Death, Daniel L. Osborne, Tal L. Simmons, Stephen P. Nawrocki

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

Using standards established by Lovejoy et al. (1) to estimate age at death from auricular surface morphology, 266 individuals of documented age, sex, and ancestry from the Terry and Bass Donated Collections were scored. Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) indicates that for the factors that could be controlled, age is the sole influence on auricular surface morphology. Ancestry and sex had no significant effect on auricular phase expression. No evidence of secular changes was detected when comparing the Terry Collection (early 20th century) to the Bass Collection (later 20th century). Pearson correlations reveal that several of the subcomponents of the auricular …

Peer Review Of Teaching Project: Survey Of Project Participants, Paul Savory, Amy M. Goodburn, Amy Nelson Burnett

Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering: Reports

In planning for the future of the Peer Review of Teaching project, we performed a survey of to collect faculty participant feedback on their experience in the project (i.e., writing a course portfolio, possibly having it externally reviewed) and the impact that the experience has had on their teaching. While each of the partner campuses (University of Nebraska-Lincoln, University of Michigan, Kansas State, Texas A&M, Indiana – Bloomington, and University of Kansas) have shaped the project experience differently for campus participants, we sought feedback from participants of all the project partners to get an overall assessment of the project.
