Estimating The Retransformed Mean In A Heteroscedastic Two-Part Model, Alan H. Welsh, Xiao-Hua Zhou Sep 2004

Estimating The Retransformed Mean In A Heteroscedastic Two-Part Model, Alan H. Welsh, Xiao-Hua Zhou

UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Two distribution free estimators are proposed to estimate the mean of a dependent variable after fitting a semiparametric two-part heteroscedastic regression model to a transformation of the dependent variable. We show that the proposed estimators are consistent and have asymptotic normal distributions. We also compare their finite-sample performance in a simulation study. Finally, we illustrate the proposed methods in a real-world example of predicting in-patient health care costs.

The Anchor, Volume 118.05: September 29, 2004, Hope College

The Anchor: 2004

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Electronic Health Records: How Close? How Far To Go?, Lisa Sprague Sep 2004

Electronic Health Records: How Close? How Far To Go?, Lisa Sprague

National Health Policy Forum

This paper looks at the central role of the electronic health record (EHR) in health information technology. It considers the extent to which EHRs are in use and initiatives designed to increase their prevalence, as well as barriers to the widespread adoption of EHRs and efforts to surmount them. Particular attention is given to such obstacles as cost, the professional culture of physicians, standardization, and legal questions.

Trumps, Inversions, Balancing, Presumptions, Institution Prompting, And Interpretive Canons: New Ways For Adjudicating Conflicts Between Legal Norms, Carlos E. Gonzalez Sep 2004

Trumps, Inversions, Balancing, Presumptions, Institution Prompting, And Interpretive Canons: New Ways For Adjudicating Conflicts Between Legal Norms, Carlos E. Gonzalez

Rutgers Law School (Newark) Faculty Papers

This article begins by reviewing the axiomatic principles that govern courts when dealing with cases in which two legal norms are interpreted as standing in conflict. The article then makes three distinct contributions.

First, the article explicates the central justification behind the use and perpetuation of the extant principles. In briefest terms, the extant principles are best justified as an attempt to resolve cases in which legal rules stand in conflict in a way that enhances or preserves the democratic legitimacy of law. They do this by favoring norms created by entities of relatively strong democratic legitimacy over norms created …

End-Of-Life Decision-Making Through Advanced Directives And Pallative Care, Beth Lada Morse Sep 2004

End-Of-Life Decision-Making Through Advanced Directives And Pallative Care, Beth Lada Morse

Student Scholarship

There are many socio-cultural and economic factors that shape discussions about treatment options for terminally ill patients. These factors include access to life prolonging medical options, societal priorities regarding the allocation of limited health care resources, cost constraints of payers and societal consensus that patient autonomy underpins life-sustaining treatment decisions. The focus of this study is primarily directed to issues of end-of-life care decisions as they relate to advance directives (AD) and palliative care. It is argued that when death is expected or foreseeable, that advance care planning has value for the individual, family, organization and community. It is debatable …

Multiple Mechanisms Regulate Numa Dynamics At Spindle Poles, Olga Kisurina-Evgenieva, Gary Mack, Quansheng Du, Ian Macara, Alexey Khodjakov, Duane A. Compton Sep 2004

Multiple Mechanisms Regulate Numa Dynamics At Spindle Poles, Olga Kisurina-Evgenieva, Gary Mack, Quansheng Du, Ian Macara, Alexey Khodjakov, Duane A. Compton

Dartmouth Scholarship

The large coiled-coil protein NuMA plays an essential role in organizing microtubule minus ends at spindle poles in vertebrate cells. Here, we use both in vivo and in vitro methods to examine NuMA dynamics at mitotic spindle poles. Using fluorescence recovery after photobleaching, we show that an exogenously expressed green-fluorescent-protein/NuMA fusion undergoes continuous exchange between soluble and spindle-associated pools in living cells. These dynamics require cellular energy and display an average half-time for fluorescence recovery of approximately 3 minutes. To explore how NuMA dynamics at spindle poles is regulated, we exploited the association of NuMA with microtubule asters formed in …
