Performance Of Cotesia Flavipes (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) In Parasitizing Chilo Partellus (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) As Affected By Temperature And Host Stage, Nanqing Jiang, Mamoudou Sétamou, Adèle J. Ngi-Song, Charles O. Omwega

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

The braconid larval parasitoid, Cotesia flavipes, is used as a biological control agent against the crambid Chilo partellus, a serious pest of cereal crops in eastern and southern Africa. We examined the survival, development parameters, and body growth patterns of the host and its parasitoid at different temperatures (22, 26, and 30°C) using third and fourth instars of Ch. partellus. For non-parasitized hosts, larval mortality tended to be highest at lowest temperature and for parasitized at third host instars only at highest temperature. Development time of Co. flavipes immatures significantly decreased with host instar and with temperature. Sex ratio of …

Repellency Of Essential Oils Of Some Kenyan Plants Against Anopheles Gambiae, Maurice O. Omolo, Denis Okinyo, Isaiah O. Ndiege, Wilber Lwande, Ahmed Hassanali

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Five mosquito repellents have been identified from the essential oils of 6 plants growing in Kenya. These include (S)-(-)-cis-perillyl alcohol, (S)-(-)-cis-verbenol, (S)-(-)-cis-carveol, (S)-(-)-perillaldehyde, caryophyllene oxide and (S)-(-)-cis-perillyl alcohol. (S)-(-)-cis-perillyl alcohol and (S)-(-)-cis-verbenol were the most potent. Essential oils of six plants growing in Kenya were screened for repellent activities against Anopheles gambiae sensu stricto. The oils of Conyza newii (Compositeae) and Plectranthus marrubioides (Labiateae) were the most repellent (RD 50 = 8.9 × 10 -5 mg cm -2, 95% CI) followed by Lippia javanica (Verbenaceae), Lippia ukambensis (Verbenaceae), Tetradenia riparia, (Iboza multiflora) (Labiateae) and Tarchonanthus camphoratus (Compositeae). Eight constituents of …

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

The effect of microhabitat temperature variation on the early development of Plasmodium falciparum in experimentally infected Anopheles gambiae s.s. (Diptera: Culicidae) was studied. Batches of mosquitoes were fed artificially on gametocyteamic blood obtained from human volunteers and then held in five environmental conditions described as: (1) incubator maintained at constant temperature of 28 ± 1°C as control; (2) temperature unregulated laboratory environment; (3) screen house; (4) grass thatched mud house and (5) corrugated iron roofed mud house. Both the grass and iron roofed mud houses were real houses found in the village communities around the ICIPE Research Centre in Mbita …

Community Development In Rural Illinois: Lessons Learned, Emily Intveld

Community Project Design and Management Reports - Politics and Government

he following paper is a synopsis, examination, and reflection of my experience as a Peace Corps Fellow in the Applied Community and Economic Development Program at Illinois State University. Compiling and examining the experiences of my class work and practical experience have not been an easy chore. However, a more daunting task has been the reflection on my Peace Corps experience that lead me to Illinois State University and this program, the graduate classes and education I received here, and the application of that knowledge and experience in my professional practice. In an attempt to structure this paper I found …

A Preservation Paradox: Political Prestidigitation And An Enduring Resource Of Wildness, Sandra B. Zellmer Oct 2004

A Preservation Paradox: Political Prestidigitation And An Enduring Resource Of Wildness, Sandra B. Zellmer

Faculty Law Review Articles

The nation's preeminent preservation statute, the Wilderness Act of 1964, is now 40 years old. By authorizing a network of congressionally designated wilderness areas on public lands, the Act has proved invaluable for protecting special areas from the most intensive forms of intrusion by humankind But the Act is facing a midlife crisis, and legitimate questions have been raised about its continuing viability as a conservation tool. This Article concludes that the preservation of wild lands remains an essential component of federal public lands management, but that the Wilderness Act, standing alone, has not fulfilled its promise of securing an …

Work-Family Conflict Among Teleworkers: Demographic Effects And Work-Related Outcomes, Katherine A. Selgrade Oct 2004

Work-Family Conflict Among Teleworkers: Demographic Effects And Work-Related Outcomes, Katherine A. Selgrade

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

This study examines the influence of work-family conflict (WFC) on work-related outcomes among teleworkers. Effects of work interfering with family (WIF) and family interfering with work (FIW) on telework satisfaction, affective commitment, and turnover intentions were examined in a secondary data analysis of 167 teleworkers. The effects of several demographic variables (gender, duration of the telework arrangement, number of children, and frequency of teleworking) on WFC were also examined. Structural equation modeling results support the influence of WIF on telework satisfaction and turnover intentions. The influence of FIW on the work outcomes was not supported. Analysis of the demographic variables …
