Dynamical Epidemic Suppression Using Stochastic Prediction And Control, Ira Schwartz, Lora Billings, Erik Bollt Oct 2004

Dynamical Epidemic Suppression Using Stochastic Prediction And Control, Ira Schwartz, Lora Billings, Erik Bollt

Department of Mathematics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

We consider the effects of noise on a model of epidemic outbreaks, where the outbreaks appear randomly. Using a constructive transition approach that predicts large outbreaks prior to their occurrence, we derive an adaptive control scheme that prevents large outbreaks from occurring. The theory is applicable to a wide range of stochastic processes with underlying deterministic structure.

Application Of Support Vector Machines And Neural Networks In Digital Mammography: A Comparative Study, Nivedita V. Candade Oct 2004

Application Of Support Vector Machines And Neural Networks In Digital Mammography: A Comparative Study, Nivedita V. Candade

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Microcalcification (MC) detection is an important component of breast cancer diagnosis. However, visual analysis of mammograms is a difficult task for radiologists. Computer Aided Diagnosis (CAD) technology helps in identifying lesions and assists the radiologist in making his final decision.

This work is a part of a CAD project carried out at the Imaging Science Research Division (ISRD), Digital Medical Imaging Program, Moffitt Cancer Research Center, Tampa, FL. A CAD system had been previously developed to perform the following tasks: (a) pre-processing, (b) segmentation and (c) feature extraction of mammogram images. Ten features covering spatial, and morphological domains were extracted …

Systemic Reform In A Federated System: Los Angeles At The Turn Of The Millennium, David Menefee-Libey Oct 2004

Systemic Reform In A Federated System: Los Angeles At The Turn Of The Millennium, David Menefee-Libey

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

I synthesize some of the lessons we have learned about systemic school reform in order and derive two explicit hypotheses about when such reforms are likely to be more and less successful. The first hypothesis focuses on program implementation: to achieve success, any systemic reform must overcome challenges at each stage of the policy-making process, from agenda-setting to policy choice to implementation. The second hypothesis focuses on the federated nature of education policy- making in the United States: any successful systemic reform must offer a program that aligns local efforts with state and sometimes federal policy. ...
