A Qualitative Inquiry Into The Responsibilities And Supports Of Paraeducators In Special Education., Annette M. Conti

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The role of the paraeducator in providing services to students with special needs has expanded to become part of a complex system of providing special education services. In order to meet the individualized needs of students with disabilities, educational agencies and school districts have increasingly relied on the services of paraeducators to facilitate the specialized instruction needed for students to participate in the least restrictive environment. Case studies were completed with three special education self-contained classrooms. The special education teachers and paraeducators who worked in these settings participated in this study through observations, interviews, and surveys. The study examined the …

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder In Firefighters: A Proposed Model Of Mediators And Moderators., Kevin S. Del Ben Jan 2004

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder In Firefighters: A Proposed Model Of Mediators And Moderators., Kevin S. Del Ben

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The diagnosis of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been studied extensively in victim populations (e.g., combat veterans and rape victims); however, very little attention has been given to the responders who come to the aid of these victims, specifically firefighters. Firefighters will respond to both a large number, and a wide variety of potentially stressful situations over the course of their careers. The dangers that firefighters encounter were brought to the attention of the public during the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Currently, there is a lack of research on basic information regarding PTSD in firefighters, such as prevalence …

Effect Of Daily Step Count Goals On Mood States Of Middle-Aged Women: A Multiple Treatment Single-Subject Design., David E. Goodrich

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Physical activity guidelines recommend adults accumulate at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity on five or more days per week (Pate et al., 1995). Research indicates mood is more positive on days when people increase moderate activity like brisk walking compared to days with no extra activity (Thayer, Godes, et al., 2004). Short walks of 5–15 minutes are sufficient to improve mood (Ekkekakis, Hall, et al., 2000; Murphy et al., 2002). The purpose of this study was to explore how eleven sedentary women's (M age = 51.6 ± 6.7 yrs.) daily mood on the Activation Deactivation Adjective Checklist [AD …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge protects a unique ecosystem in the Mid-Atlantic region. Because public goods such as ecosystem preservation are not sold in markets the value of this type of good is not always obvious. Policy makers need guidance on how society should allocate resources to preserve wildlife habitat and wilderness recreation opportunities. The goals of this study were to measure the economic benefits associated with providing a wildlife refuge in Tucker County, West Virginia; determine how value for the refuge is affected by distance of the respondents from the refuge; and determine the types of activities and amenities …

The Future Of Professional Education In Natural Family Planning, Richard J. Fehring Jan 2004

The Future Of Professional Education In Natural Family Planning, Richard J. Fehring

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

Nurses and other health care professionals often have little knowledge of methods of natural family planning (NFP) and do not readily prescribe natural methods for their patients. One reason for this is that little or no information on NFP is provided in nursing or medical schools. The holistic, informational, and integrative nature of NFP fits well with professional nursing practice. A university online distance education NFP teacher training program, which offers academic credit and includes theory, practice, and the latest developments in fertility monitoring, has been developed for health care professionals. Professional NFP services in the United States need to …

Fmri Of Healthy Older Adults During Stroop Interference, Scott Aaron Langenecker, Kristy A. Nielson, Stephen M. Rao

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

The Stroop interference effect, caused by difficulty inhibiting overlearned word reading, is often more pronounced in older adults. This has been proposed to be due to declines in inhibitory control and frontal lobe functions with aging. Initial neuroimaging studies of inhibitory control show that older adults have enhanced activation in multiple frontal areas, particularly in inferior frontal gyrus, indicative of recruitment to aid with performance of the task. The current study compared 13 younger and 13 older adults, all healthy and well educated, who completed a Stroop test during functional magnetic resonance imaging. Younger adults were more accurate across conditions, …

American Indian Women Warriors: Their Perceptions Of Success Factors In Graduate School, Loretta Dominquez

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Higher education is not just a Black and White issue, but also an issue regarding First Nations people (i.e., American Indian/Native American and Alaskan Indians). American Indians throughout history in the U.S. have been neglected in all levels of education. American Indian women in graduate programs have experienced prejudices, isolation, and lack of support, guidance, or mentoring from the faculty, staff, or administration in graduate programs. An ethnographic qualitative research of personal interviews was the methodology chosen to grasp the personal perceptions of four American Indian woman warriors in professional higher educational positions. They shared their experiences of their success …

Analysis Of Human Thermal Comfort Using A Coupled Model For Predicting Human Body-Environment Heat And Mass Exchange, Ahmed M. Al-Mogbel

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Recent advances in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) make it possible to accurately predict many features of airflow within ventilated spaces. The present study investigates thermal comfort aspects of an occupant in a conditioned space, using a CFD code.

The heat and mass transfer between the human body and the surrounding environment is analyzed by a coupled model that accounts for dispersal of metabolically generated heat in the body to the surroundings by the combined mechanisms of radiation, convection, respiration and evaporation. A two-node model in which two coupled non-linear algebraic equations govern the skin temperature and the body core temperature …
