The Third Alphabet Of Life: Carbohydrate-Protein Interactions, Kami̇l Seyrek
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The structural diversity of oligosaccharides found in glycoconjugates is enormous. This is due to the number of different ways in which sugar monomers may be linked to each other regarding linkage position, anomeric configuration, pyranosidic or furanosidic ring form and chain branching. It has been proposed that these factors contribute to the exquisite potential of oligosaccharides to establish a code system of biological information. The information contained in these structures is decoded by complementary sites present on carbohydrate binding proteins (lectins).

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
This study reports the water activity, moisture, sodium chloride, pH, acidity, vinegar, total plate count, fecal coliform, coliform and Clostridium botulinum of canned mussels processed by 2 different smoking techniques. The results indicated that the average measured water activity was 0.971 ± 0.001 for liquid smoked canned mussel with curry sauce and 0.982 ± 0.001 for traditional smoked mussel. The moisture of samples varied between 69.440% for traditional smoked mussel and 76.35% for salting before traditional smoking. The moisture, salt, pH, acidity and vinegar were significantly different in some of the groups (P < 0.05). Mussels smoked using liquid and oak wood sawdust, in tomato puree sauce, curry sauce and sunflower oil sauce, were sterilized at 120 ± 1 ºC and 5.2 ± 0.1 F_0. In none of the products was swelling or C. botulinum detected at 37 ºC or 55 ºC. Prior to canning, the mussels were investigated for fecal coliform, coliform and total plate count and found to carry no risk in terms of these parameters.

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The effects of ethanol and 4-methyl pyrazole were investigated in the treatment of 30 dogs toxicated with antifreeze (AF). The AF toxication produced significant increases in blood urea, creatinin and potassium and a decrease in blood calcium levels. Calcium-oxalate monohydrate, which is pathognomic for AF toxication, was consistently seen in urine sediment. Ethanol was rarely effective on the multisystemic effects that occurred in dogs or ADH inhibition. CNS findings were also observed after ethanol administration. The results indicated that 4-MP treatment provided earlier and safer healing than ethanol. It was deduced that 4-MP + NaHCO_3 was more effective than ethanol …

The effects of a single administration of [D-Ser(tBu)^6,Pro^9-NEt]-LHRHa at high dose alone (50 µg/kg), and at constant dose (20 µg/kg) combined with different doses of the dopamine receptor antagonist Metoclopramide (5, 10, 20, 40 mg/kg) for the induction of spawning in common carp broodstocks were determined under local hatchery conditions and compared with classic carp pituitary extract (CPE, double injection) application (water temperature 24 ºC). Fish injected with physiological saline (0.7% NaCl) were used as a control group. No spawning was observed in the control group or in the groups given LHRH-a combined with low (5, 10 mg/kg) doses of …

The quality of imported mackerel (Scomber scombrus Linnaeus, 1758) was examined and the effect of different thawing methods on the quality was determined. The frozen samples were taken from 3 points: the first depot, the second depot and the retail sellers. The study was carried out in duplicate. The quality of the samples was determined according to sensory, chemical and microbiological analyses. It was determined that the 3 different thawing procedures (in water, at room temperature and in a refrigerator) did not change the quality significantly. This study shows that the frozen mackerel was transported to the retailers and customers …
