Stage-Specific And Interactive Effects Of Sedimentation And Trout On A Headwater Stream Salamander, Winsor H. Lowe, Keith H. Nislow, Douglas T. Bolger Jan 2004

Stage-Specific And Interactive Effects Of Sedimentation And Trout On A Headwater Stream Salamander, Winsor H. Lowe, Keith H. Nislow, Douglas T. Bolger

Dartmouth Scholarship

In species with complex life cycles, stage-specific effects of environmental conditions combine with factors regulating stage-specific recruitment to determine population-level response to habitat disturbance. The abundance of the stream salamander Gyrinophilus porphyriticus(Plethodontidae) is negatively related to both logging-associated sedimentation and brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) in headwater streams throughout New Hampshire, USA. To understand the mechanisms underlying these patterns, we investigated stage-specific and interactive effects of sedimentation and brook trout on G. porphyriticus. We conducted quantitative surveys of salamanders, brook trout, and substrate embeddedness in 15 first-order streams and used a controlled experiment to test the direct and interactive effects of …

Achievement Test Scores Of African American Students Attending Magnet And Non-Magnet Schools, Sadie M. Mitchell Jan 2004

Achievement Test Scores Of African American Students Attending Magnet And Non-Magnet Schools, Sadie M. Mitchell

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine if there were any statistically significant differences among the reading and math scores of African American students attending magnet and non-magnet schools in a large urban school district. This study involved a posttest-only design. Groups were not randomly assigned, but rather assigned to the two groups based on their classification as magnet or non-magnet. Thus, this study was a quasi-experimental posttest-only design with the non-magnet schools assigned to that group based on the school's demographic variables matching the schools in the magnet group. A two-sample t-test was the statistical procedure used for …

Multi-Channel Fetal Magnetocardiographic Signal Seperation For Analysis Of Heart Rate Variability, Joshua Quaid Campbell Jan 2004

Multi-Channel Fetal Magnetocardiographic Signal Seperation For Analysis Of Heart Rate Variability, Joshua Quaid Campbell

Theses and Dissertations

Objective: The objectives were to implement signal-processing techniques to separate the fetal magnetocardiogram (FMCG), as collected by SQUID (Superconducting QUantum Interference Device) gradiometers, from mixtures of maternal and fetal biomagnetic signals recorded during the antepartum period and to develop a database of normal FMCG values of the fetal cardiac time intervals and heart rate variability measures. Materials and Methods: The research was performed in three phases: 1) Independent component analysis (ICA), nonlinear filtering techniques, and orthogonal projection methods were optimized enabling the FMCG to be processed using traditional signal analysis techniques; 2) The cardiac time intervals and heart rate variability …

Developing Diabetes Educational Materials For Gambian Clinic Staff And Type 2 Diabetics, Rachel Golin

Masters Theses

The Gambia is a small, developing country on the west coast of Africa. As with much of the world, there has been an increase in Type 2 Diabetes in the Gambia. According to the World Health Organization, the total population of the Gambia is 1.3 million (1). In 2000, there were 22,000 diabetics in the Gambia (estimated prevalence of 2%) and it is projected that the number will reach 61,000 by the year 2030 (2).

One way to help combat the increase of Type 2 Diabetes and its complications is by educating clinic staff workers and diabetics using educational materials …

An Analysis Of Mentorship In Michigan Police Agencies, Jeffrey G. Swanson Jan 2004

An Analysis Of Mentorship In Michigan Police Agencies, Jeffrey G. Swanson

Masters Theses

The purpose of this research is to investigate how newer police officers are familiarized into their agency with respect to the manner in which they were trained and mentored. The concept of mentoring programs has been highly successful in the private and business sectors for many years. Since the concept of formal mentoring programs in law enforcement is largely limited to date, this study incorporates research in several other disciplines, to determine if there may be a corollary regarding law enforcement and other disciplines, and if so, to what degree mentoring exists among patrol officers. A survey was distributed to …

Piano Inside Out: The Expansion Of The Expressive, Technical, And Sonorous Spectrum In Selected Twentieth-Century Art-Music Repertoire For The Modern Acoustic Piano, Mira Kruja Jan 2004

Piano Inside Out: The Expansion Of The Expressive, Technical, And Sonorous Spectrum In Selected Twentieth-Century Art-Music Repertoire For The Modern Acoustic Piano, Mira Kruja

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Art Music for the acoustic piano has changed tremendously during the twentieth century. Some of the techniques and skills pianists need to master in order to be able to perform successfully twentieth-century art piano music include: a refined ability to discriminate varied layers of sonorities; sophisticated pedal combinations; a sometimes percussive technique; and superior control of complex metric and rhythmic passages. New combinations of patterns that require specific technical preparation pose substantial pianistic challenges. Todays pianist needs to master a variety of glissandi, chords, or single melody textures played directly on the strings inside the piano and to combine such …

Practicing Practicing, Ladelle Mcwhorter Jan 2004

Practicing Practicing, Ladelle Mcwhorter

Philosophy Faculty Publications

"There is something ludicrous in philosophical discourse," Michel Foucault writes, "when it tries, from the outside, to dictate to others, to tell them where their truth is and how to find it... " (Foucault 1985, 9). In our age of moral relativism and multiculturalism, it is easy to hear in this sentence a simple condemnation of intellectuals who pose as authorities on questions of belief, and it is all too easy to agree; yes, of course, we ought not tell other people what to think. But given the issues, directions, and investments of Foucault's work, especially in The Use of …

Center on Children, Families, and the Law (and Related Organizations): Publications

The study showed the average provider in the Midwest is female, married and a parent. This provider had some training or education beyond high school but not an advanced degree, was active in child care training, had a first aid/CPR certificate, considered child care her profession or calling, had been in the child care field for over 5 years and planned to remain a provider for at least 5 years.

The average provider was observed to provide minimal quality child care. Using well-established observational measures of quality, center-based preschool care averaged 4.57 on the Early Childhood Environment Rating Scale (ECERS-R); …

Soft Paths, Hard Choices: Environmental Lessons In The Aftermath Of California's Electric Deregulation Debacle, Steven Ferrey Jan 2004

Soft Paths, Hard Choices: Environmental Lessons In The Aftermath Of California's Electric Deregulation Debacle, Steven Ferrey

Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works

In 2001, California's electric sector deregulation exploded, and with it the state economy and the state political structure. The Governor of California, just recently reelected was recalled by the population, and replaced with Arnold Schwarzenegger. While the physical manifestations of this crisis received media attention, there was a major legal subtext that is still playing out in the courts and will continue for a decade. With the pivotal role that electric power plays in modern American life, and the key transitional role of the legal and regulatory system in transitioning states to a restructured and less regulated format, there are …

Tribal Courts And Federal Sentencing, Kevin Washburn Jan 2004

Tribal Courts And Federal Sentencing, Kevin Washburn

Faculty Scholarship

In light of the overwhelming acceptance of the norm of tribal self-governance in federal Indian policy, the Commission's decision not to credit the legitimate work of tribal courts in adjudicating misdemeanor sentences is surprising. This article critically evaluates this peculiar and unexplained policy. Part I describes the current federal policy toward tribal governments with particular emphasis on tribal courts and explains the role of tribal courts in the unique federal criminal justice regime that governs Indian country. Part II describes the Federal Sentencing Guidelines with particular attention to the provisions on criminal history. Part II also evaluates the Commission's current …

An Investigation For Genetic Susceptibility To Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus And Its Microvascular Complications, D.M. Hegazy Jan 2004

An Investigation For Genetic Susceptibility To Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus And Its Microvascular Complications, D.M. Hegazy

School of Biomedical Sciences Theses

Long-term exposure to diabetes mellitus is associated with metabolic abnormalities such as chronic hyperglycemia and redox imbalance. Uncontrolled hyperglycaemia and genetic factors are implicated in the pathogenesis of diabetic microvascular diseases. Genetic mutation through the genes coding for enzymes involved in glucose metabolism and immuno-regulatory mechanisms may contribute to the susceptibility to type I diabetes mellitus (TIDM) and its chronic microvascular diseases. Previous studies have shown that the transcription factor, nuclear factor kappa 8 (NFκB) and heat shock proteins (HSPs) are two redox-sensitive cellular responses of most immune and inflammatory diseases including diabetes and its late vascular complications. NFκB promotes …

On The Links Between Managerial Actions, Keystone Species, And The Resilience Of Ecological-Economic Systems, Amitrajeet A. Batabyal Jan 2004

On The Links Between Managerial Actions, Keystone Species, And The Resilience Of Ecological-Economic Systems, Amitrajeet A. Batabyal

Articles

Managerial actions influence the survival probabilities of the keystone species of an ecological-economic system. In turn, the well-being of these keystone species translates into the well being or the resilience of the underlying ecological-economic system. What are the theoretical links between managerial actions, keystone species, and the resilience of ecological-economic systems? Recently, Batabyal (2002) has addressed aspects of this question. In this paper, we extend the analysis in Batabyal (2002). First, we use a stochastic model to delineate a stylized ecological-economic system. Next, we discuss the links between managerial actions, keystone species, and this ecological-economic system’s resilience. Finally, we show …

Throwing Caution To The Wind: The Precautionary Principle, Nafta And Environmental Protection In Canada, Paul Guy Jan 2004

Throwing Caution To The Wind: The Precautionary Principle, Nafta And Environmental Protection In Canada, Paul Guy

Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies

According to the precautionary principle, the lack of full scientific certainty should not preclude measures to prevent environment degradation. This principle has been incorporated into numerous international instruments and is approaching the status of customary international law. Moreover, the Canadian government has embraced the principle and the Supreme Court of Canada recently confirmed it as a basis of environmental policy in 114957 Canada Ltée (Spraytech, Société dʼ’arrosage) v. Hudson (Town). This paper examines the ability of the precautionary principle to actually function as a guide for environmental policy in light of Canadaʼs international trade obligations. In particular, it considers Canadaʼs …

Sars And International Legal Preparedness, Lawrence O. Gostin, Jason W. Sapsin, Jon S. Vernick, Stephen P. Teret, Scott Burris

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

This article does not advance arguments regarding the efficacy or circumstances under which governments should exercise personal control measures such as quarantine or isolation. A literature on this aspect of SARS disease control strategies is just starting to develop more fully. Instead, we highlight the legal aspects of personal control measures employed against SARS in order to emphasize the importance of understanding public health law's role in authorizing and constraining disease control strategies, as well as the importance of legal preparedness in nations governed under the rule of law. In the contemporary international environment, one nation's failure in legal preparedness …

I am deeply honored to have been selected to hold the William Van Cleve Chair. After the announcement several months ago, I have had the pleasure of having people tell me just how wonderful a man Bill Van Cleve was and how lucky I am to have this chair in honor of him. The picture that I have gotten of this man is truly that of the lawyer statesman. He took his profession very seriously. He approached his work with dedication and passion but, more significantly, he loved his profession in the broadest sense. He understood that the practice of …
