Quantification Of Marine Sediment Properties From Planar And Volumetric Pore Geometries, Allen Hagerman Reed Jan 2004

Quantification Of Marine Sediment Properties From Planar And Volumetric Pore Geometries, Allen Hagerman Reed

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Pore geometry and topology are important determinants of sediment physical properties, such as porosity and permeability. They also influence processes that occur in the sediment, such as acoustic propagation, attenuation, and dispersion, single- and multi-phase fluid flow, and hydrodynamic dispersion. This study uses images to evaluate pore geometry and topology of ooid (subspherical particles) and siliclastic (angular quartz) sand that was collected from the marine environment south of Bimni Bahamas and Ft. Walton Beach, FL, respectively. Image analysis techniques and predictive tools enable insight into the relationships among sediment pore geometry, topology, and physical properties for these differently shaped sands. …

The influence of borate content, borate type, and resin content on various properties was analyzed. It was found that the addition of borate negatively …

Difference In Sleep Disturbances Among Severely And Profoundly Retarded Adults With High Risk Behaviors, Carrie Jo Malone Jan 2004

Difference In Sleep Disturbances Among Severely And Profoundly Retarded Adults With High Risk Behaviors, Carrie Jo Malone

LSU Master's Theses

Individuals with intellectual disabilities have been linked to higher incidences of a variety of mental illnesses when compared to the general population (Rutter, Tizard, Yule, Graham, & Whitmore, 1976; and Borthwick-Duffy, 1994). Because of the symptoms associated with mental retardation; such as limited social skills, delayed or minimal communication skills, and maladaptive behaviors, mental illness can be difficult to assess when combined with an intellectual disability (Sovner, 1986). Currently there is no available mechanism for diagnosing sleep disorders in adults with severe and profound mental retardation. The purpose of the first study is to provide validation of the Diagnostic Assessment …

Persons with mental retardation continue to remain one of society’s most vulnerable groups as the number of individuals served increases and non-proportional resources are allotted to take of their needs. With results of national investigations indicating widespread indiscriminate abuse of restraints and overmedication to manage dangerous behaviors, federal mandates have been initiated to ensure ethical, safe and clinically sound use of these techniques. This study addressed the implementation of systemic changes that included a restraint education program and policy changes, careful monitoring and review of restraint and behavioral programming by oversight review bodies, and intense training of preventative and de-escalation …

From Oklahomans To "Okies": Identity Formation In Rural California, Toni Ann Alexander Jan 2004

From Oklahomans To "Okies": Identity Formation In Rural California, Toni Ann Alexander

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Throughout the twentieth century difficult economic circumstances have resulted in reduced employment opportunities. In-migrants have long borne the brunt of these limitations, facing open hostilities from residents who felt that these "outsiders" were undeserving of employment and social services. Within the context of the 1930s Depression in the Central Valley of California, such negative public sentiment was often directed at "Okies," the 315,000 former residents of the "Western South" who crossed the California state line in search of employment in the agricultural fields of the Golden State. In this dissertation, I examine the changing conceptualizations of Okie identity throughout the …

Differentiating Beliefs Of Insured And Uninsured, Insurance-Eligible State Employees: A New Application Of The Health Belief Model, Jill Elizabeth Murray Jan 2004

Differentiating Beliefs Of Insured And Uninsured, Insurance-Eligible State Employees: A New Application Of The Health Belief Model, Jill Elizabeth Murray

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The increasing number of uninsured Americans is a crucial policy issue for the United States; however, there is a paucity of empirical social science research on the uninsured with which to guide the development of policy. Previous research indicates that when insurance is voluntary, whether offered through a state-initiated reform to reduce uninsurance or offered through an employer as a benefit, some people choose to remain uninsured. The literature calls for research to increase understanding of the factors that affect whether people offered insurance accept or decline that insurance. Research on the uninsured is lacking a theoretical framework to help …

Effects Of Aerobic And Anaerobic Training Protocols On 4000m Track Cycling Time Trial, William Mathieu Cheramie Jan 2004

Effects Of Aerobic And Anaerobic Training Protocols On 4000m Track Cycling Time Trial, William Mathieu Cheramie

LSU Master's Theses

The aim of this study was to determine whether performance in a 4000m individual pursuit could be significantly influenced by training protocols that are solely based in either aerobic/distance training, or anaerobic/sprint training. Faina et al., (1989) and Neuman et al. (1992) have found, using professional track cyclist that there appears to be a split in energy pathways used to perform the event. Their results indicate that 20% of the workload is achieved via anaerobic metabolism and the remaining 80% are achieved through aerobic metabolism. Group #1, followed a training protocol modeled after repeated, short duration, (<1:30.00s/1000m), high intensity sprinting. This particular training protocol may serve to utilize a greater proportion of its allotted time by generating beneficial metabolic adaptations that may possibly improve the subjects performance in the 4000m individual pursuit. Group #2, trained primarily through aerobic means, followed the "more traditional" training method for such an event. This protocol consisted of cycling intervals of distances proportionally longer (>4000m) than that …

Partitioned Pricing: Can We Always Divide And Prosper?, Bidisha Burman Jan 2004

Partitioned Pricing: Can We Always Divide And Prosper?, Bidisha Burman

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Research on partitioned pricing suggests that separating the surcharges from the base price of the advertised product may lead to a more favorable effect on consumers' evaluation of the offer compared to a combined presentation of the base price and the surcharge. In this dissertation we propose that partitioned price presentation may not always result in positive outcomes vis-à-vis combined presentation of prices. We propose that consumers' need for cognition and the perceived reasonableness of the surcharge are likely to influence their evaluation of partitioned versus combined prices. Based on cue diagnosticity, Persuasion Knowledge Model, and Characterization-Correction Model we develop …

Effects Of Family Violence And Parental Psychopathology On The Psychological Outcome Of Urban Adolescents Exposed To Community Violence, Shannon Self-Brown Jan 2004

Effects Of Family Violence And Parental Psychopathology On The Psychological Outcome Of Urban Adolescents Exposed To Community Violence, Shannon Self-Brown

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Previous research has documented an association between adolescents’ exposure to community violence and a range of mental health problems. However, some violence-exposed youth maintain high levels of adaptive behavior and exhibit good psychological functioning. Thus, it appears that protective and/or risk factors are involved in the community violence-psychological outcome relation, which mitigate the conditions under which community violence exposure leads to adverse adolescent outcome. According to the ecological transactional model, protective and/or risk factors may exist within the family that influence adolescent outcome in response to community violence exposure. The purpose of this study was to delineate the relations among …

The Diagnosis Of Dementia In Persons With Mental Retardation: Validating Methods Of Assessment, Joanne Bielecki

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The usual assessment instruments for the diagnosis of dementia are often difficult to use among individuals with mental retardation. This study investigates whether a modified method based on Visser et al. (1997) can identify a dementing process. Ninety individuals diagnosed with severe and profound mental retardation were studied. One half of the participants were diagnosed with Down's syndrome. The participants were equally assigned to one of three groups based on perceived risk of dementia. A differential prevalence design was used. Both cross sectional and longitudinal analyses were utilized in this study. Results indicate that the Visser et al. (1997) method …

LSU Master's Theses

Cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) rupture is a common injury in the dog and major cause of degenerative joint disease. The pathophysiology of CCL rupture in the dog is well described. Osteoarthritis secondary to CCL rupture causes severe pain and lameness. There are many surgical techniques accepted for dogs with CCL rupture. A commonly performed technique is an extracapsular repair with a lateral fabella-tibial suture (LFS) using large diameter nylon leader line (NLL). Mechanical demands placed upon the LFS are high requiring the material used be able to withstand a high amount of force, undergo minimal elongation, and have a high …

Durability Of Pine Strandboard Modified With Low Molecular Weight Phenol Formaldehyde, Matthew Daniel Voitier Jan 2004

Durability Of Pine Strandboard Modified With Low Molecular Weight Phenol Formaldehyde, Matthew Daniel Voitier

LSU Master's Theses

A continuing challenge for wood and wood-based composite building materials has been durability--the power of resisting agents or influences which tend to cause changes, decay, or dissolution; lastingness. In the case of wood-based products, this often requires a resistance to biological degradation and moisture related dimensional instability (particularly in particle and flake or strand boards). Borden Chemical Company has developed a new low molecular weight phenol formaldehyde additive, PD-112, to improve durability in composite wood products. This study investigated PD-112’s contribution to durability in oriented strand board (OSB) through laboratory testing of treated southern pine strandboard panels versus untreated control …

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This study examines the therapeutic qualities of selected short stories and novels by contemporary African American woman writer, J. California Cooper. Specifically, I examine the manner in which Cooper's texts can be appreciated as "healing narratives." Healing narratives, as defined in this study, are those texts in which the author consciously creates fictitious representations of reality, while employing the concept of hope as a central and guiding factor. Those aspects of the narrative that have the ability to heal or "lay hands on" a reader vary because the effectiveness of the story depends upon how well the reader can identify …
