A Novel Strategy Of Controlling Bovine Pneumonic Pasteurellosis: Transfecting The Upper Respiratory Tract Of Cattle With A Gene Coding For The Antimicrobial Peptide Cecropin B, Charles Mitchell Boudreaux

LSU Master's Theses

The very potent antibacterial activity of cecropin B makes it a likely candidate to prevent and/or treat Mannheimia haemolytica 1:A infection in the upper respiratory tract (URT) of cattle. The purpose of this study was to ascertain if the URT could be transfected with a gene coding for the antimicrobial peptide cecropin B. By transfecting cattle with a gene coding for cecropin B, this study attempted to inhibit colonization of a virulent strain of M. haemolytica 1:A in the URT while investigating any possible changes in the indigenous and transient nasal flora. In this study the antibacterial efficacy of cecropin …

Bacteriological data from the quarter milk samples were used to determine and compare initial infection rates and cure rates following calving between treatment and control groups. Comparisons were also made between groups for differences in reproductive performance, milk yield, somatic cell count and milk ketone concentration. Milk yield did not differ between groups for either DHIA monthly average kg/day, 305 day actual …

Psychological And Neuropsychological Correlates Of Postconcussional Disorder, Joy Helena Wymer Jan 2004

Psychological And Neuropsychological Correlates Of Postconcussional Disorder, Joy Helena Wymer

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Chronic symptoms of Postconcussional Disorder (PCD) occur in a significant minority of mild brain injury patients. The latest research suggests an interactionistic perspective as the most logical and empirically supported pathogenesis for the development and maintenance of PCD. The interactionistic perspective implicates organic factors in the development of acute symptoms of PCD, and psychological factors in the maintenance of chronic symptoms. Possible psychological factors relevant in the maintenance of PCD symptoms include a grief response, a coping hypothesis, and the development of dysfunctional coping loops. Providing support for a psychological etiology of symptom maintenance is research indicating reduction of chronic …

Racial Attitudes And Policy Preferences, Jennifer Kirsten Pike Jan 2004

Racial Attitudes And Policy Preferences, Jennifer Kirsten Pike

LSU Master's Theses

This thesis analyzes statistical models of the impact of racial attitudes on race-neutral policy preferences in the 2002 Louisiana population. Previous research has identified racial attitudes as a determinant of welfare spending preferences in the national white population. This paper uses ordered logit modeling to test for the impact of racial attitudes on welfare and public education spending preferences within a state population, with separate analyses for black and white respondents. Moreover, this analysis provides a parallel model for highway spending as a control for the theoretical race-coded nature of welfare and public education. The analysis demonstrates similar racialization of …

The Effectiveness Of Videotape Feedback In Sport: Examining Cognitions In A Self-Controlled Learning Environment, Justin Menickelli Jan 2004

The Effectiveness Of Videotape Feedback In Sport: Examining Cognitions In A Self-Controlled Learning Environment, Justin Menickelli

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Providing videotape feedback (VTFB) as a form of knowledge of performance (KP) to learners is a common instructional tool in teaching and coaching. VTFB has attracted renewed attention and various “laundry lists” of recommendations (e.g., provide VTFB immediately following performance, use frequently, vary camera angles) on VTFB implementation (e.g., Franks & Maile, 1991; Trinity & Annesi, 1996). Furthermore, researchers have begun exploring the cognitive variables which serve to mediate the impact of VTFB (e.g., Hebert, Landin, & Menickelli, 1998; Menickelli, Landin, Grisham, & Hebert, 2000). Recent research has focused on two key issues: VTFB provided in a self-controlled learning environment …

Preservation Of Sperm Harvested From The Rat, Caprine, Equine, And Bovine Epididymis, Aida Nioma James

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The interest in preserving endangered species has increased the amount of attention lent to the recovery of functional sperm from the epididymides of deceased males (Foote, 2000). Postmortem specimens have a finite time period before decomposition affects functionality. Determination of this “window of opportunity” to harvest and preserve epididymal sperm would be beneficial for further research in sperm preservation and assisted reproductive technologies. The objective of these studies was to determine 1) the “window of opportunity” to collect viable rat, caprine, equine and bovine epididymal sperm, 2) if epididymal sperm collected could be cryopreserved, 3) to test two common cryoprotectants …

A Cross-Sectional Study Comparing The Psychosocial Correlates For Overconcern With Body Size And Shape In Men And Women, Amy Elaine Rzeznikiewicz Jan 2004

A Cross-Sectional Study Comparing The Psychosocial Correlates For Overconcern With Body Size And Shape In Men And Women, Amy Elaine Rzeznikiewicz

LSU Master's Theses

The purposes of this cross-sectional study were two-fold. The primary aim of this study was to test whether the Muscle Appearance Satisfaction Scale (MASS), a recently developed, reliable, and valid measure of muscle dysmorphia symptoms, measures a parallel phenomenon in men that the Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ) does in women, i.e., overconcern with body size and shape. To test this aim, psychosocial correlates for overconcern with body size and shape in women were tested to be the same psychosocial correlates for a measure of muscle dysmorphia in men. The psychosocial variables included in this model were body dissatisfaction, negative affect, …

The Discipline And Disciplining Of Margaret Sanger: Us Birth Control Rhetoric In The Early Twentieth Century, C. Wesley Buerkle Jan 2004

The Discipline And Disciplining Of Margaret Sanger: Us Birth Control Rhetoric In The Early Twentieth Century, C. Wesley Buerkle

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Margaret Sanger's rhetoric in the US birth control movement demonstrates the social forces that act upon rhetors and women's bodies, conforming both to established gender norms even as they attempt to violate those standards. This project studies Sanger's birth control rhetoric to understand how her arguments for women's right to contraception conformed women's bodies to traditional feminine notions despite her early efforts to contradict such dictates of domesticity. Research on nineteenth-century feminist rhetors demonstrates a pattern of women challenging feminine ideals by speaking publicly but replicating the familiar themes that women must care for others. To explain such a pattern, …

Juvenile Recidivism: An Analysis Of Race And Other Socio-Demographic Predictors Within Three Intervention Modalities In The State Of Louisiana, Jospeter M. Mbuba Jan 2004

Juvenile Recidivism: An Analysis Of Race And Other Socio-Demographic Predictors Within Three Intervention Modalities In The State Of Louisiana, Jospeter M. Mbuba

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Owing to the increasingly growing problem of juvenile crime and the recognition that adult criminals begin their criminal careers in their juvenile years, the need to contain juvenile offending has never before been so glaring. Delinquency of young offenders can be predicted and prevented. But the methods most often used to predict juvenile recidivism typically derive from stereotypical conceptions, which often yield very low accuracy levels. This study is an attempt to make up for this shortfall. It tracks one year recidivism of 2,810 juvenile offenders released from state custody of Louisiana between July 1999 and June 2000. Of these …

Utilizing The Strengths Of Our Cultures: Therapy With Biracial Women And Girls, Lisa M. Edwards, Jennifer Teramoto Pedrotti

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

Historically, psychology has operated from a pathology-based perspective. In the last several years, however, efforts have been made to balance this view with an acknowledgement of individual strengths and assets. For biracial women and girls, this approach may be particularly useful. Through the utilization of several techniques, including solution-focused interventions and narrative approaches to treatment, therapists can empower their female biracial clients through development of their strengths.

Sustainable Energy, Environmental Policy, And States' Rights: Discerning The Energy Future Through The Eye Of The Dormant Commerce Clause, Steven Ferrey

Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works

This article analyzes the various regulatory incentives for renewable energy development in the various states, and their possible Constitutional shortcomings. Almost half the states have enacted renewable portfolio standards, which create monetized renewable energy credits that are tradable credits for sustainable energy development compliance. About one-third of the states have developed system benefit charges and renewable trust funds to subsidize selected renewable energy projects. Each of these states have defined differently what is a qualifying renewable energy project. Some of the states, to further in-state interests, have established programs that impermissibly violate the Commerce Clause of the Constitution. Others come …

Assessing Perception Of Family Nutrition Program Characteristics And Nutrition Education Needs Of Low Socioeconomic Status Individuals, Denise Marie Holston

LSU Master's Theses

The Louisiana Family Nutrition Program (FNP) reaches up to 120,000 food-stamp recipients and other low SES individuals per year through direct and indirect nutrition education methods. To be effective in eliciting behavior change, a nutrition education program must be developed to be consistent with the needs, motivations, and concerns of the target audience; therefore, it is important that the needs, motivations, and concerns are being met by FNP. The purpose of this study was to determine, through the use of focus group discussions (FGD), whether nutrition education needs of FNP participants are being satisfied by the program. Nutrition education needs …

Modeling The Effects Of Rainfall Intensity And Deep Chiseling On Infiltration And Runoff Within Drainmod For Alluvial Soils, Daniel Nyabiba Moriasi Jan 2004

Modeling The Effects Of Rainfall Intensity And Deep Chiseling On Infiltration And Runoff Within Drainmod For Alluvial Soils, Daniel Nyabiba Moriasi

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Accurate hydrologic models are needed to aid engineers and researchers design, install and evaluate efficient and cost-effective agricultural water management systems to reduce risks associated with food production, and to reduce soil erosion and water pollution. One model used for the alluvial soils of Louisiana is DRAINMOD. This model does not accurately predict infiltration and runoff for the crusting-prone alluvial soils of Louisiana. The main goal of this study was to modify the current DRAINMOD model to incorporate the effects of rainfall intensity and deep chiseling to improve its estimation of infiltration and surface runoff. The second goal was to …
