Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

All-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) sensitivity of acute promyelocytic leukaemia (APL) cells is strictly dependent on the presence of t(15;17), but the molecular background of this sensitivity remains obscure. We showed the down- regulation of DEK, AF4 and FLI1 genes in the vitamin D treatment of APL cell line HL-60 , using cDNA array technology in our previous study. This finding prompted us to investigate the expression of these genes in APL patient samples. The effect of ATRA was studied in 6 APL patients carrying t(15;17). Two samples from each patient were compared with a primary diagnostic sample and a sample …

Evaluation Of Pulsed Electromagnetic Fields On Bone Healing After Implant Placement In The Rabbit Mandibular Model, Jüli̇de Özen, Arzu Atay, Selçuk Oruç, Mehmet Dalkiz, Bedri̇ Beydemi̇r, Sali̇h Develi̇

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Although bone healing around titanium implants has already been evaluated, the effect of pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMF) during the period of bone maturation around titanium dental implants has not yet been investigated. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of PEMFs on bone formation following the insertion of titanium-dental implants in the rabbit mandibular model. Ti-6Al-4V (Sulzer Calcitek, California, USA) dental implants were inserted into the mandibulae of 28 New Zealand rabbits (6 weeks old). Fourteen were stimulated with PEMFs for 2 consecutive weeks, 4 h/day, at a magnetic intensity of 0.2 milli Tesla (mT), while the …

Serological Evaluation Of Hsv-1 And Hsv-2 Infection In Pregnancy, Ni̇zami̇ Duran

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

We performed a serological evaluation of herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections at the time of labor. In order to determine the seroprevalence of asymptomatic HSV infections in pregnant women, blood samples were collected for antibody measurement from 130 randomly selected pregnant women. Presence of HSV IgG and IgM antibodies in the serum samples was tested by ELISA. The prevalence of HSV-1 gG1 antibodies was 90% (117/130), that of HSV-2 gG2 antibodies was 63.1% (82/130) and that of HSV-2 IgM antibodies was 13.8% (18/130). Eight (44.4%) of the pregnant women with HSV-2 IgM were at the same time found to have …

Use Of Spongious Bone Chips And Fascia Temporalis In Alveolar Bone Defects, Hakan H. Tüz, Ümi̇t K. Akal, Mi̇ne Cambazoğlu, Reha Ş. Ki̇şni̇şçi̇

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Graft materials are used for inducement of regeneration in bone defects. Organic and synthetic bone graft materials facilitate remodelation or healing of the bone and induce new bone formation in the area of bone resorption caused by pathological, traumatic, and physiological reasons. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of spongious allogenic bone graft and fascia temporalis membranous collagen tissue on the healing of bone defects clinically and radiologically. The study was carried out on 90 bone defects of 81 patients who underwent apicoectomy, cystectomy, and curettage of chronic infections in the maxilla and mandible. Defects were …

Comparative Cytotoxicity Of Fludarabine In Human Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells And In The Promyelocytic Leukemia Cell Line (Hl60), A. Lale Doğan Jan 2004

Comparative Cytotoxicity Of Fludarabine In Human Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells And In The Promyelocytic Leukemia Cell Line (Hl60), A. Lale Doğan

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Fludarabine is an inhibitor of DNA/RNA synthesis with antitumor activity on lymphoproliferative malignancies. We investigated the dose-dependent cytotoxic effects of the drug on human peripheral blood mononuclear cells, the HL60 cell line and the differentiated HL60 cells. Dimethylformamide was used for the neutrophilic differentiation of HL60 cells and the MTT assay was used to estimate drug cytotoxicity. Undifferentiated tumor cells had higher proliferation rates compared to the differentiated subline. There was 57% cell death in HL60 cells at a dose of 5 µg/ml of the drug. On the other hand, in differentiated HL60 cells and nonmalignant cells, cell death did …

The Evaluation Of The Stomatognathic System Of A Group With Anterior Openbite, Semra Ci̇ğer, Eli̇f İdi̇l Keser

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Anterior openbite (AOB) is a malocclusion considered to be associated with symptoms and signs of temporomandibular disorders (TMD). An accurate, objective and repeatable method is needed in order to clarify the relationship between TMD and anterior openbite. The aim of this study is to examine the functions of the stomatognathic systems of 21 adolescents with AOB by means of electrovibratography (EVG), electrognathography (EMG), electroganthography (EGN), and transcranial and cephalometric radiographs. Nonconcentricity and mild asymmetry of the condyle fossa relationships were observed on transcranial radiographs. EMG results showed that 85% of the subjects had abnormal swallowing patterns and 52% had abnormal …

The Effects Of Melatonin On 6-Phosphogluconate Dehydrogenase: An In Vitro And In Vivo Study, İlhami̇ Gülçi̇n, Şükrü Beydemi̇r

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Melatonin is known to influence a variety of biological processes including circadian rhythms, neuroendocrine, and cardiovascular and immune functions as well as thermoregulation. Melatonin is the chief secretory product of the pineal gland, although it is also produced in other organs. In this study, in vitro effects of melatonin on 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase from human erythrocytes and in vivo effects of melatonin on 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase from rat (Sprague-Dawley) erythrocytes were studied. Human erythrocyte 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase was purified in 3 steps, namely haemolysate preparation, ammonium sulphate fractionation (35-65%) and 2´,5´-ADP Sepharose-4B affinity gel chromatography. 6-Phosphogluconate dehydrogenase was purified with a recovery rate …

Male, 4–5-week-old, genetically diabetic (C57B/LKsJdb+/db+) and nondiabetic original strain (C57BL/KsJ) mice were fed a diet containing 1 mg of Zn/kg (low zinc groups) or 54 mg of Zn/kg (control groups) for 27 days. Food intake and body weight gain were recorded regularly. On day 28, after an overnight fast, the animals were sacrificed and blood glucose, serum insulin concentrations, liver glycogen contents, and zinc levels in the femur and pancreas were determined. The consumption of the low zinc diet …
