Food Poisoning In Saudi Arabia. Potential For Prevention?, Yagob Y. Al-Mazrou Jan 2004

Food Poisoning In Saudi Arabia. Potential For Prevention?, Yagob Y. Al-Mazrou

Saudi Medical Journal

Food poisoning is becoming a very important health problem both internationally and in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). Salmonella species (spp) is the most important pathogen, but due to the extensive effort carried by the health authorities to prevent or eradicate communicable diseases, new pathogens are now emerging such as Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Norwalk like viruses. This review paper highlights the magnitude and determinants of food poisoning internationally and in KSA, and proposes some recommendations on its prevention. Clearly, there is a steady increase in the food poisoning accidents in KSA, especially during the summer months and …

The Precautionary Principle As The Law Of Planetary Defense: Achieving The Mandate To Defend The Earth Against Asteroid And Comet Impacts While There Is Still Time, Evan R. Seamone Jan 2004

The Precautionary Principle As The Law Of Planetary Defense: Achieving The Mandate To Defend The Earth Against Asteroid And Comet Impacts While There Is Still Time, Evan R. Seamone

Journal Articles

Current legal and policy efforts to enable adequate defense against potential asteroid or comet collisions with the earth are insufficient because they are indirectly premised upon theories that require verification of a clear and imminent threat before governmental agencies can act. This Article identifies the "precautionary principle" as the preeminent law of planetary defense against asteroid and comet impacts. The precautionary principle requires governments to take action to prevent harm even when it is uncertain if, when, or where the harm will occur. It requires governments to implement specific frameworks for making prompt decisions, directs intergovernmental bodies to plan for …

Heber J. Grant And The Utah Loan And Trust Company, Ronald W. Walker Jan 2004

Heber J. Grant And The Utah Loan And Trust Company, Ronald W. Walker

BYU Studies

Before 6:00 A.M. on May 29, 1897, the portly and veteran Apostle Brigham Young Jr., himself ailing due to an attack of dropsy, called at the Heber J. Grant household to pray a blessing upon his associate. He found that "Bro Grant... had a poor night but he was going to the hospital with firm faith that all would be well." The day before, Grant awoke with sever lumbar and abdominal pain. The doctors diagnosed a ruptured appendix and advanced peritonitis and advised immediate surgery. As the hour-and-a-half operation progressed, the nine attending surgeons found "extraordinary suppuration and commenced mortification." …

Grant's Watershed: Succession In The Presidency, 1887-1889, Ronald W. Walker

BYU Studies

Events during 1887-89, during Elder Wilford Woodruff's succession to the Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, remains an important but largely untold story—a time when differing views divided the Church's General Authorities and when the policies and procedures for installing a new president of the Church were tested and confirmed. These years are also important for the insights they offer in understanding the life of Heber J. Grant, who himself regarded that time as a personal watershed. While it is clear that he acted with candor, energy, and idealism throughout the episode, with hindsight he believed …

Keeping The City Totally Clean: Yellow Fever And The Politics Of Prevention In Colonial Saint-Louis-Du-Senegal, 1850-1914, Kalala J. Ngalamulume

History Faculty Research and Scholarship

This article explores the ways in which French colonial authorities met the life and death challenge. represented by the re-emergence of yellow fever epidemics in Saint-Louis-du-Senegal at a time when physicians knew very. little about the etiology, diagnosis, transmission and treatment of most infectious and parasitic diseases. The discussion focuses on changing strategies and policies designed to address yellow fever threats, the attitudes and priorities of the authorities, the limits of 'colonial medicine' and the responses of. people affected by sanitary measures. The article argues that because of the ignorance of the etiology and epidemiology of yellow fever, policies were …

Sociology Faculty Research and Scholarship

This article seeks to broaden understanding of issues and controversies addressed in social science research on women's and gender studies by researchers and activists based in English-speaking sub-Saharan Africa. The topics covered were selected from those ratified by African women in the Africa Platform for Action in 1995 as well as from current debates on the politics of identity. The common feminist issues the authors identified were health; gender-based violence; sexuality education, globalization and work; and politics, the state, and nongovernmental organizations. In addition, the authors address theoretical and methodological trends. All four coauthors are feminist sociologists: One scholar is …

Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Research Center Faculty Publications

Isoxsuprine is used to treat navicular disease and other lower-limb problems in the horse. Isoxsuprine is regulated as a class 4 compound by the Association of Racing Commissioners, International (ARCI) and, thus, requires regulatory monitoring. A gas chromatography-mass spectrometry method utilizing electron impact ionization was developed and validated for the quantitation of isoxsuprine in equine plasma or equine urine. The method utilized robotic solid-phase extraction and tri-methyl silyl ether products of derivatization. Products were bis-trimethylsilyl (TMS) isoxsuprine and tris-TMS ritodrine, which released intense quantifier ions m/z 178 for isoxsuprine and m/z 236 for ritodrine that were products of C-C cleavage. …

Rluipa: Where Are We Now? Where Are We Heading?, Alan C. Weinstein Jan 2004

Rluipa: Where Are We Now? Where Are We Heading?, Alan C. Weinstein

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

Over the past three years, hardly a week has gone by without at least one news-story announcing that a church, synagogue, or religious school-I'll use the term “church” from here on as a shorthand for all houses of worship or other religious institutions—is claiming that its right to religious freedom is being infringed by local government land use regulations in violation of the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act. RLUIPA, a federal statute signed into law in September 2000, was enacted to restore to full vigor legal protection for religious freedoms that the Act's proponents argue had been seriously …

The International Legacy Of Brown V. Board Of Education, Brian E. Ray Jan 2004

The International Legacy Of Brown V. Board Of Education, Brian E. Ray

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

The authors describe the international legacy of Brown v. Board of Education in two discrete but related parts. First, they survey the international and domestic political contexts of the decision, which other commentators have convincingly demonstrated played a prominent role in the debates surrounding legalized segregation and in the arguments before the Supreme Court in the case itself. Important in this section is the intense and widespread international attention that was paid both to the problem of race relations in the U.S. and the decision in Brown. This background sets up the conclusions the authors draw from their survey …

Crying Wolf Or An Excited Utterance - Allowing Reexcited Statements To Qualify Under The Excited Utterance Exception, Jone Tran Jan 2004

Crying Wolf Or An Excited Utterance - Allowing Reexcited Statements To Qualify Under The Excited Utterance Exception, Jone Tran

Cleveland State Law Review

It is clear that the reexcitement analysis has both benefits and detriments. Reexcitement may be a basis for admission of evidence in cases where the danger of influencing during the calm period is somehow obviated-as in the recent Crawford opinion. Because of the heightened danger of undue influence in reexcitement cases, the courts should require corroborating evidence that the declarant did not confide in anyone during the intervening period of calm, to reduce the chance of outside pressures and influences. Congress should provide an amendment to the Federal Rules of Evidence expressly allowing for reexcitement, but also requiring either physical …
