American Standard & The Princess Of Rome, Ohio: Two Plays, Jonathan Joy

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

From the back roads of Eastern Kentucky to the front porch of a southern Ohio home comes this collection of full length comedic plays by Jonathan Joy. Join two rural State Senate candidates (one Republican and one Democrat) forced to travel the campaign trail together in the political farce American Standard. Or see the world of dysfunctional family politics through the eyes of a fourteen year old girl in The Princess of Rome, Ohio. Also, trace the development of both works, from inception to production, in commentary that focuses on the process of writing for the stage.

The Aesthetic Turn In Green Marketing: Environmental Consumer Ethics Of Natural Personal Care Products, Anne Marie Todd Jan 2004

The Aesthetic Turn In Green Marketing: Environmental Consumer Ethics Of Natural Personal Care Products, Anne Marie Todd

Faculty Publications

Green consumerism is on the rise in America, but its environmental effects are contested. Does green marketing contribute to the greening of American consciousness, or does it encourage corporate greenwashing? This tenuous ethical position means that eco-marketers must carefully frame their environmental products in a way that appeals to consumers with environmental ethics and buyers who consider natural products as well as conventional items. Thus, eco-marketing constructs a complicated ethical identity for the green consumer. Environmentally aware individuals are already guided by their personal ethics. In trying to attract new consumers, environmentally minded businesses attach an aesthetic quality to environmental …

Syracuse Journal of International Law and Commerce

This Note focuses on the accountability of multinational corporations that commit human rights violations abroad. More specifically, this note will focus on whether Exxon Mobil, who reported approximately $210 billion in revenue and was listed by Fortune as the largest publicly held corporation for the year 2000, may be held liable under the Alien Torts Claim Act ("ATCA") for knowingly supporting the egregious behavior of the Indonesian military. Part I of this Note explores the scope of the corporate human rights problem. Part II discusses the birth of multinational corporations ("MNCs"). Part III examines the history of the A TCA …

Natural Law And The Regulation Of Sexuality: A Critique, Dr. Brent L. Pickett Jan 2004

Natural Law And The Regulation Of Sexuality: A Critique, Dr. Brent L. Pickett

Richmond Journal of Law and the Public Interest

I will argue that the natural-law understanding of sexuality, and its application to the law, is deeply flawed, in regards to homosexuality and sodomy. I begin by laying out some of the foundations of the natural law position. Central to the position is an account of human goods that are seen as good in themselves, and hence as rational bases for choice and human action. In regards to sexuality, the two most important goods, at least from the natural law perspective, are those of marriage and personal integration. I argue that a real appreciation of the role of these two …

Caenorhabditis Elegans Atx-2 Promotes Germline Proliferation And The Oocyte Fate, Eleanor M. Maine, Dave Hansen, Deborah Springer, Valarie E. Vought Jan 2004

Caenorhabditis Elegans Atx-2 Promotes Germline Proliferation And The Oocyte Fate, Eleanor M. Maine, Dave Hansen, Deborah Springer, Valarie E. Vought

Biology - All Scholarship

In the Caenorhabditis elegans germline, proliferation is induced by Notch-type signaling. Entry of germ cells into meiosis is triggered by activity of the GLD-1 and GLD-2 pathways, which function redundantly to promote meiosis and/or inhibit proliferation. Activation of the germline Notch-type receptor, GLP-1, ultimately inhibits the activities of the GLD-1 and GLD-2 pathways. We previously identified several ego (enhancer of glp-1) genes that promote germline proliferation and interact genetically with the GLP-1 signaling pathway. Here, we show that atx-2 is an ego gene. Our data suggest that ATX-2 is not a positive regulator of the GLP-1 signaling pathway and GLP-1 …

Does Spiritual Care Really Help? A Study Of Patient’S Perceptions, Charlotte Stephenson, Kaye Wilson-Anderson Jan 2004

Does Spiritual Care Really Help? A Study Of Patient’S Perceptions, Charlotte Stephenson, Kaye Wilson-Anderson

Faculty Publications - College of Nursing

Microwaves, drive-through windows, cell phones, e-mail, Internet high-ways- fast, faster, fastest. These gadgets reflect the world of the 21st century in which we live. Nursing, too, has moved with these changing cultural norms, becoming compressed and high speed. However, the essence of people, the clients we care for, has remained that of heart-felt needs and a thirst for spiritual peace. How do we as nurses meet the demands of today’s increased patient care loads, unending paperwork and longer hours, yet still meet our clients’ spiritual needs?

Risk Factors And Hiv/Aids Among The Msm In Developing Countries Outside Of The African Continent, India Dennis Jan 2004

Risk Factors And Hiv/Aids Among The Msm In Developing Countries Outside Of The African Continent, India Dennis

International Journal of Global Health and Health Disparities

The spread of AIDS has seriously impacted developing countries on a scale unimaginable to industrialized countries. The number of people living with HIV/AIDS worldwide was estimated to be 46 million people as of Dec. 2003, with a total of over 60 million people who were affected by the virus globally. Sub-Saharan Africa is the region with the highest rate with 29 million cases (UNAIDS/WHO, 2003). However, the HIV cases within the confines of developing countries outside of the African continent have become a major concern for researchers and epidemiologist alike. This paper will review epidemiological literature that examines the connection …

Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome : Description, Epidemiology, And Control Measures, Jorge E. Galva

International Journal of Global Health and Health Disparities

Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (hereinafter SARS) is the first severe and readily transmissible new disease to emerge in the 21st century 1. The presence of this infectious agent was first recognized in early November 2002 in the province of Guangdong in the People's Republic of China. SARS rapidly spread from there to other parts of the world, notably Southeast Asia and Canada. According to data compiled in August 2003, altogether 8,422 cases occurred in 29 countries. The most severely affected countries were China (including the Special Administrative Region of Hong Kong and Taiwan), Canada, Singapore and Vietnam, all of which …

Paper Trail: One Method Of Information Literacy Assessment, Jennifer E. Nutefall Jan 2004

Paper Trail: One Method Of Information Literacy Assessment, Jennifer E. Nutefall

Staff publications, research, and presentations

Assessing students' information literacy skills can be difficult depending on the involvement of the librarian in a course. To overcome this, librarians created an assignment called the Paper Trail, where students wrote a short essay about their research process and reflected on what they would do differently. Through reviewing and grading these papers, librarians determined whether students understood the difference between the library catalog and article databases, evaluated the students' search terms to see if they used effective topic keywords and Boolean operators, and learned more on how the students reflected on their research process.

Moving Beyond The Client Role: Helping Human Service Organizations Identify Program Participant’S Assets, Laura Nichols, Shannon Gleeson, Sandra Figueroa Jan 2004

Moving Beyond The Client Role: Helping Human Service Organizations Identify Program Participant’S Assets, Laura Nichols, Shannon Gleeson, Sandra Figueroa

Sociology

Human service agencies have traditionally provided services to a population considered "in need" of those services. Program participants are often seen solely as passive recipients of food, housing, health care, case management, etc. However, community developers, program evaluators, human service/development staff and administrators, as well as researchers are finding that involving program participants in the planning and administration of programs and research results in better programs, program utilization, and empowerment of program participants (Nichols 2002; Papineau and Kiely 1996).

Public Health Insurance Design For Children: The Evolution From Medicaid To Schip, Sara J. Rosenbaum, Anne R. Markus, Colleen Sonosky Jan 2004

Public Health Insurance Design For Children: The Evolution From Medicaid To Schip, Sara J. Rosenbaum, Anne R. Markus, Colleen Sonosky

Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications

In 2005 Medicaid will turn 40, a momentous event in the life of the largest and most complex of all means-tested public entitlement programs. Since 1997, Medicaid has co-existed with the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), a small program which covers a fraction of the number of Medicaid enrolled children but whose legislative structure looms large against its much beleaguered companion. To the unpracticed eye, SCHIP and Medicaid appear to be quite similar in design; in reality however, their differences could not be more profound, and it is in these differences that clear directions for Medicaid’s possible future become …

This paper summarizes recent synthetic efforts devoted to the generation of new, second-generation texaphyrin-type drugs, specifically species that involve known or potential anticancer agents covalently attached to a tumor-localizing texaphyrin core. Particular emphasis will be placed on the strategies needed to prepare such systems, as well as on the choice of active group being subject to attachment.

A Wrky Gene From Creosote Bush Encodes An Activator Of The Abscisic Acid Signaling Pathway, Xiaolu Zou, Jeffrey R. Seemann, Dawn Neuman, Qingxi J. Shen Jan 2004

A Wrky Gene From Creosote Bush Encodes An Activator Of The Abscisic Acid Signaling Pathway, Xiaolu Zou, Jeffrey R. Seemann, Dawn Neuman, Qingxi J. Shen

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The creosote bush (Larrea tridentata) is a xerophytic evergreen C3 shrub thriving in vast arid areas of North America. As the first step toward understanding the molecular mechanisms controlling the drought tolerance of this desert plant, we have isolated a dozen genes encoding transcription factors, including LtWRKY21 that encodes a protein of 314 amino acid residues. Transient expression studies with the GFP-LtWRKY21 fusion construct indicate that the LtWRKY21 protein is localized in the nucleus and is able to activate the promoter of an abscisic acid (ABA)-inducible gene, HVA22, in a dosage-dependent manner. The transactivating activity of LtWRKY21 …
