Repeatability Of On-Road Routes And A Comparison Of On-Road Routes To The Federal Test Procedure, J. Axel Radermacher
Repeatability Of On-Road Routes And A Comparison Of On-Road Routes To The Federal Test Procedure, J. Axel Radermacher
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
West Virginia University has developed a Mobile Emissions Measurement System that recorded vehicle, engine, and exhaust behavior during in-use testing. This system obtained data from numerous vehicles over specified on-road routes. A study was conducted on on-road route repeatability. A methodology for finding repeatability had to be established, and factors influencing repeatability were identified. It was found that routes and drivers significantly influenced repeatability, and that further study of a larger sample group needs to be conducted before specific conclusions could be drawn about the influences of the vehicle on repeatability.;A further study was conducted on how well the on-road …
Effects Of Drought On The Growth Of Young And Mature Temperate Forests In West Virginia, Nicholas R. Doner
Effects Of Drought On The Growth Of Young And Mature Temperate Forests In West Virginia, Nicholas R. Doner
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Recent research suggests that the temperate deciduous forests of the eastern United States may have played a significant role in the sequestration of atmospheric carbon dioxide over the last 100 years. However, little is known about the role of forest management and climatic variability on the productivity of these forests. The purpose of this study was to determine the variation in aboveground production between two different aged forest stands and to evaluate the effect of drought on inter-annual variation in productivity. Aboveground net primary production (ANPP) was compared with precipitation and the Palmer Drought Severity Index to determine the effects …
Snow Avalanche Disturbance In Intermountain Spruce-Fir Forests And Implications For The Spruce Bark Beetle (Coleoptera: Scolytidae), Elizabeth G. Herbertson
Snow Avalanche Disturbance In Intermountain Spruce-Fir Forests And Implications For The Spruce Bark Beetle (Coleoptera: Scolytidae), Elizabeth G. Herbertson
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Spruce beetle outbreaks are the primary biotic disturbance affecting forests in the Intermountain spruce-fir zone. Major snow avalanches can produce large quantities of host material for spruce beetle colonization; however, few studies have examined the influence of avalanche disturbance on outbreak initiation. The purpose of my research was to investigate potential relationships between these two disturbance agents. In the first study, I used dendro-ecological analyses to date major avalanche years on the Wasatch Plateau in south-central Utah, and then determined what climate factors were associated with avalanche occurrence. The results indicated that mean January snowfall was significantly related to the …
Modeled Sulfur Dioxide Exposure From A Proposed Coal Fired Power Plant, Using Geographic Information Systems And Air Dispersion Modeling, Steven Jason Hutchens
Modeled Sulfur Dioxide Exposure From A Proposed Coal Fired Power Plant, Using Geographic Information Systems And Air Dispersion Modeling, Steven Jason Hutchens
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study models the contribution of sulfur dioxide (SO 2) from a proposed coal fired power plant (CFPP) above existing ambient levels. Most vulnerable to SO2 exposure appear to be the elderly, young, and diseased, here identified as sensitive receptors (SR). Epidemiologic studies suggest 260mug/m3 as the lowest toxic threshold for SR exposure. It was hypothesized that added SO2 concentrations to existing ambient levels at regional sensitive receptors, under worst case scenario, would not exceed 260mug/m3.;The methods used identify and quantify density locations of localized SR using geographic information systems. Modeled worst case air dispersion concentration exposure to localized SR …
Facies Analysis Of The Devonian Gordon Stray Sandstone In West Virginia, Patrick S. Mcbride
Facies Analysis Of The Devonian Gordon Stray Sandstone In West Virginia, Patrick S. Mcbride
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Since its discovery in 1895, West Virginia's Jacksonburg-Stringtown field has had a primary production of 20 million barrels of oil. Based on 10 full-bore cores from Wetzel and Tyler Counties, the reservoir---the Gordon Stray Sandstone---is interpreted to be part of a barrier-island complex, comprising (from bottom to top) lower-shoreface, upper-shoreface, and foreshore sandstone. Tying core interpretations to 123 well logs across the field enables the various facies to be mapped. The major pay zone occurs stratigraphically within the middle of the shoreface facies, a medium-grained, well sorted sandstone. The barrier-island then prograded rapidly westward, laying down a thin sandstone. Mapping …

Late Hercynian Leucogranites Modelling As Deduced From New Gravity Data : The Example Of The Millevaches Massif (Massif Central, France), A Gebelin, G Martelet, M Brunel, M Faure, P Rossi
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
The Millevaches granitic complex, located in the northern part of the French Massif Central, is elongated in a N-S direction, perpendicular to the main E-W trend of the Hercynian belt. It is affected on its limits and in its core by several ductile shear zones that have necessarily played a great role in the emplacement and exhumation of the massif. Based on gravity modelling and recent field observations, this study intends to highlight the massif structure at depth and discuss its mode of emplacement and relations with the surrounding terrains. The new gravity and density measurements on the north-east part …

The Wilderness Problem: A Narrative Of Contested Landscapes In San Juan County, Utah, David Banis
The Wilderness Problem: A Narrative Of Contested Landscapes In San Juan County, Utah, David Banis
Dissertations and Theses
Wilderness preservation has been at the center of debates about public land policy for almost half a century, and nowhere has the controversy been more intractable than in Utah. Despite its vast expanses of unsetded and undeveloped red rock desert, managed primarily by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Utah has less designated wilderness than in any other state in the West. In this study, I focus on San Juan County in southeast Utah to study the conflict over the designation of wilderness. The controversy pits local residents and state politicians against state and national environmental groups, with the BLM …

Paper Session I-A - Geographic And Planning Characteristics Of Commercial Spaceports: Strategic Policy Considerations For Their Future, Christopher Shove
Paper Session I-A - Geographic And Planning Characteristics Of Commercial Spaceports: Strategic Policy Considerations For Their Future, Christopher Shove
Space Congress® Proceedings
The presentation is based on two academic papers I previously wrote. I know the topic is broad but it addresses spaceports in a bigger light of regional issues required for a successful spaceport.
Space is a geographic place from which numerous private and government entities operate just as terrestrial industries. Due to government policy changes in the late 1980s commercial space industries began to spin-off from the U.S. government space program and separately evolve. At the dawn of the 21st Century commercial space industries have stabilized into viable business industrial operations referred to as space commerce. Motivated by profit, a …

African Costume For Artists: The Woodcuts In Book X Of Habiti Antichi Et Moderni Di Tutto Il Mondo, 1598, Laura Renee Herrmann
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study investigates the woodcuts of African dress in Cesare Vecellio's 1598 costume book Habiti antichi et moderni di tutto il mondo. While Vecellio's book has been previously studied to understand its contribution to sixteenth-century conceptions of human variation across geography and Venetian identity making, I concentrate instead on the book's intended function. In doing so, I show how its woodcuts of Africans, should be understood primarily as proposals for costumes to be used in new artistic productions.
Vecellio situated his representations of African costume in a highly organized geographic framework that was shaped by travel narratives. These texts …

School of Global Integrative Studies: Faculty Publications
This is a report of analysis of 15th c bone materials from the site of Akurvík in NW Iceland excavated in 1990. A small international project in Árneshreppur district recovered a series of stratified midden deposits associated with small turf structures on an eroding beachfront. Radiocarbon dates identify at least two major phases of occupation and use, one extending into the mid 13th century, and the other dating to the mid 15th century. This report documents the animal bone collection from the later 15th c occupation. Dominated by cod fish, these deposits appear to be the product of seasonal fishery …
