Spatial Variation In The Response Of Tree Rings To Normal Faulting During The Hebgen Lake Earthquake, Southwestern Montana, Usa, Matthew F. Bekker Apr 2004

Spatial Variation In The Response Of Tree Rings To Normal Faulting During The Hebgen Lake Earthquake, Southwestern Montana, Usa, Matthew F. Bekker

Wasatch Dendroclimatology Research

Tree rings have frequently been used to identify the effects of earthquakes on forests, but little is known about spatial variation in the response of trees to intraplate normal faulting. This paper documents and describes the effects of tree location (distance from and position above or below the fault scarp), size and age on the response of tree rings to the 1959 magnitude 7.5 Hebgen Lake earthquake, which occurred along a normal fault in the Gallatin National Forest in southwestern Montana. Core samples from 88 trees were collected along nine 100-m transects straddling the Hebgen scarp, and from 28 additional …

From Mission To Megacity: The Changing Concentration Of The Los Angeles City-System, Kerri L. Cosby Apr 2004

From Mission To Megacity: The Changing Concentration Of The Los Angeles City-System, Kerri L. Cosby

Theses and Dissertations

Having an understanding of when, where, and why people settle in an area is crucial in explaining the growth course of a city. However, this cannot be done by looking at a city in isolation. Its surrounding region has a tremendous impact on its development. The purpose of this thesis is to examine the growth of Los Angeles from a regional perspective, called the Los Angeles city-system, which consists of Los Angeles and its hinterland. Connections are made between the history and the geography of the Los Angeles city-system by examining the spatial distribution of population within the region between …

Development Of A Tool To Facilitate Participation Of Maori In The Management Of Stream And River Health, Colin R. Townsend Apr 2004

Development Of A Tool To Facilitate Participation Of Maori In The Management Of Stream And River Health, Colin R. Townsend

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

A cultural health index (CHI) for streams was developed in a program of collaborative research involving members of Ngai Tahu (an iwi [tribe] within the South Island of New Zealand) and ecologists at Otago University. The aim was to provide a tool for effective participation of Maori in resource management decisions. Five cultural values are of central importance to the nature of the CHI: mauri (spiritual life force), mahinga kai (traditional resource harvesting), kaitiakitanga (guardianship obligation), ki uta ki tai (mountains-to-the-sea holistic philosophy), and wai taonga waters that are treasured). The CHI has three components. Forty-six stream sites in two …

Program Evaluation: Rose Urban Rural Teacher Training 2004, Rosyland Frazier, G. Williamson Mcdiarmid, Alexandra Hill

ISER Reports

Teacher Training, together with the Student Exchange and the Sister School Exchange, make up the Rose Urban Rural Exchange. That broad program is funded by the U.S. Department of Education and administered by the Alaska Humanities Forum. It is intended to build mutual understanding and a statewide sense of community by bringing urban students and teachers to rural Alaska-and rural students and teachers to urban Alaska-to learn about each other's cultures. Under the Teacher Training program, teachers from middle schools and high schools in urban areas participate in cultural camps sponsored by rural communities and Alaska Native organizations. These camps, …

United Or Divided Twins? The Political Economy Of Beringia, Arlon R. Tussing, John Tichotsky Apr 2004

United Or Divided Twins? The Political Economy Of Beringia, Arlon R. Tussing, John Tichotsky

ISER Reports

When the US purchased Alaska from the Russians in1867 it quickly stepped into Russia's role in the colonial relationship. The US exploited salmon as the primary base resource from about 1878. Gold was discovered in lode deposits in the 1880s in the southeast of Alaska (Juneau and Treadwell), about the same time as the Lena goldfields of Irkutsk began to step up operations. We anticipate that Alaska contains or has demonstrated most of the elements that we can expect to see in the foreseeable development of other post-Soviet Arctic regions, including Alaska's nearest neighbor Chukotka, one of Russia's poorest and …

Leaving King Island: The Closure Of A Bureau Of Indian Affairs School And Its Consequences, Nicole M. Braem

Arctic and Northern Studies

By 1966, the King Island Inupiat had moved from their island village and lived at Nome. Little has been written about the de facto relocation of the King Islanders---and how and why it happened. What follows is an ethnohistory of the relocation based on the anthropology and history of the Bering Strait region, archival records of the Bureau of Indian Affairs and interviews with King Islanders in Nome. The heart of the matter was the village's school. Based on the evidence, the BIA closed the school because of the expense and inconvenience of operating at King Island. This accomplished what …

Adolph Murie: Denali's Wilderness Conscience, Linda S. Franklin

Arctic and Northern Studies

Denali National Park, Alaska substantially owes its stature as Alaska's premier wilderness park to Adolph Murie. Forty years after he retired as park biologist, Murie still influences the perception and management of Denali National Park. Murie's development from childhood to esteemed scientist and wilderness advocate followed a linear progression. His rural upbringing under the tutelage of his older brother, Olaus Murie, cultivated his desire to be a biologist and his appreciation for wild places. His academic training in animal ecology solidified his belief that the management of natural areas must consider all species as essential and equally valuable. His pioneering …

A Coat Of Many Colors: Immigration, Globalization, And Reform In New York City's Garment Industry, Daniel Soyer

History

For more than a century and a half—from the middle of the 19th century to the end of the 20th—the garment industry was the largest manufacturing industry in New York City, and New York made more clothes than anywhere else.

For generations, the industry employed more New Yorkers than any other and was central to the city’s history, culture, and identity. Today, although no longer the big heart of industrial New York, the needle trades are still an important part of the city’s economy—especially for the new waves of immigrants who cut, sew, and assemble clothing in shops around the …

Chicago's Other Magnificent Mile: Howard Street's Growth And Its Effect Upon The Rogers Park Neighborhood, Ryan Mcguinness '04

Honors Projects, History

The town sorts itself into neighborhoods spaces, into social classes, into languages and nationalities and colors, into parishes and school districts and shopping streets and block clubs and bus routes. And into hope and dreams, for that matter. It's a dreamers town, for all of its harshness. Some of it writhing, some waiting, some being reborn. It's passe, it's fresh, it's gone and it's coming, and as it sheds one skin it grows another. It's a town that never stops, a neighborhood for the world. The best place to put your finger on its pulse is on the streets where …
