Comparing Twenty-Four Years Of Forest Change In Two Communities Of Mexico's Meseta PuréPecha Using Multi-Spectral Satellite Imagery, Kevin Scott Martin Jun 2004

Comparing Twenty-Four Years Of Forest Change In Two Communities Of Mexico's Meseta PuréPecha Using Multi-Spectral Satellite Imagery, Kevin Scott Martin

Dissertations and Theses

The Meseta Purépecha, a volcanic plateau in the Mexican state of Michoacan, is home to one of the most species-rich pine forests in the world. Recent increases in demand for forest products has put added pressure on these resources. Though existing research has suggested significant deforestation in the Meseta, there is little information identifying specific areas of decline. This study focuses on two indigenous communities in the Meseta--Pichátaro and Sevina. Both communities have long relied on wood as an economic resource. However, the two communities have reacted differently to increased demand for forest resources. The purpose of this study is …

Are The Poor Too Poor To Demand Health Insurance?, Rajeev Ahuja, Johannes Jütting Jun 2004

Are The Poor Too Poor To Demand Health Insurance?, Rajeev Ahuja, Johannes Jütting

Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review

Community based microinsurance has aroused much interest and hope in meeting health care challenges that face the poor. In this paper we explore how institutional rigidities, such as credit constraint, affect the demand for health insurance and how insurance could potentially prevent poor households from falling into the poverty trap.In this setting, we argue that the appropriate public intervention to generate demand for insurance is not to subsidize premium, but to remove these rigidities (i.e., ease credit constraint). Thus from an insurance perspective as well, our analysis highlights the importance of the poor having the appropriate saving and borrowing instruments.

Community-Based Savings And Credit Cooperatives In Nepal: A Sustainable Means For Microfinance Delivery?, Chris D. Gingrich Jun 2004

Community-Based Savings And Credit Cooperatives In Nepal: A Sustainable Means For Microfinance Delivery?, Chris D. Gingrich

Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review

Savings and credit cooperatives (SCCs) provide a variety of micro-finance services to households in three of Nepal's distinct regions—the Hills, Terai, and Kathmandu Valley. Nearly all Nepali SCCs are self-funded using member savings and equity. Most Nepali SCCs are also profitable, including those located in poor, remote areas of the Hills region. Key reasons for the SCCs' strong financial performance include reliance on member savings and control of administration costs. High-profit SCCs also show superior interest earnings on loans compared to low-profit SCCs. Nepali SCCs do not need concessionary funds, because they are already profitable and able to mobilize member …

Interstate Management Of The High Plains Aquifer: A Case Study Of Western Texas And Eastern New Mexico, Kim Bannerman

Student Thesis Honors (1996-2008)

This paper attempts to address this increasingly volatile issue by suggesting a form of interstate groundwater management through focus on one geographical area, the Llano Estacado region of Eastern New Mexico and Western Texas. This region shares a common groundwater source that is quickly being depleted, the High Plains Aquifer (the Aquifer). Up to the present the management of the Aquifer has remained localized under each state's water law. A new management mechanism is needed because often state water laws are inapt for promoting efficient use of groundwater and are also extremely inflexible in allowing for the change of use …

Editor's Introduction: “In The Hope That Something Will Stick”: Changing Explanations For The Book Of Mormon, Daniel C. Peterson

Review of Books on the Book of Mormon 1989–2011

A slightly different version of this essay was first presented at the 2002 conference of the Foundation for Apologetic Information and Research (FAIR; see www.fair-lds.org), in Provo, Utah. It represents a sketch for what I hope will eventually become a more detailed study of the varying counterexplanations that have been offered for the Book of Mormon.

Ranchoapan: The "New Obsidian" City Of The Tuxtlas?, Robert S. Santley Jun 2004

Ranchoapan: The "New Obsidian" City Of The Tuxtlas?, Robert S. Santley

Research Papers

The origin of cities is a subject of major interest to geographers, economic historians, and archaeologists. One view of their development stipulates that cities are built on a rural economic base. In other words, the process is from the bottom up, with centers ultimately emerging to provide a variety of goods and services to a population of rural consumers distributed around them. An alternative view is that the development was from the top down. Centers emerged for any number of social and political, but once present nascient craft specialists manipulated the economic environment, making the rural countryside increasingly dependent on …

What Kinds Of Adolescent Leaders Are Hiding In Newbery Books?, Carol Jasperse Lautenbach Jun 2004

What Kinds Of Adolescent Leaders Are Hiding In Newbery Books?, Carol Jasperse Lautenbach

Dissertations

Though adolescent leadership is worth developing, often it is not addressed effectively in the general middle school curriculum. This study addresses adolescent leadership by describing and discussing eight major leadership categories and 38 subcategories found in seventeen representative Newbery Award-winning books. The sample was chosen using a multiple-step process and contained fictional stories with adolescent protagonists in realistic situations. Content analysis was used to quantify and analyze the leadership themes; a code book was used to organize data. Occurrence of each sub-category was ranked for prevalence within each book. These rankings form the basis for the analysis of findings which …

Wage Premia In Employment Clusters: Agglomeration Economies Or Worker Heterogeneity?, Shihe Fu, Stephen L. Ross Jun 2004

Wage Premia In Employment Clusters: Agglomeration Economies Or Worker Heterogeneity?, Shihe Fu, Stephen L. Ross

Economics Working Papers

The correlation between wage premia and concentrations of firm activity may arise due to agglomeration economies or workers sorting by unobserved productivity. A worker's residential location is used as a proxy for their unobservable productivity attributes in order to test whether estimated work location wage premia are robust to the inclusion of these controls. Further, in a locational equilibrium, identical workers must receive equivalent compensation so that after controlling for residential location (housing prices) and commutes workers must be paid the same wages and only wage premia arising from unobserved productivity differences should remain unexplained. The models in this paper …

The Changing World Of Employee Benefits, Maria O'Brien Hylton Jun 2004

The Changing World Of Employee Benefits, Maria O'Brien Hylton

Chicago-Kent Law Review

The employee benefits picture, at least for many plan participants and some plan sponsors, is a scary and bleak one. The number of workers with pension coverage is declining, health insurance rates are rising much faster than the rate of inflation, and the number of uninsured continues to rise as well. The decline in union density, the recent boost given by the U.S. Supreme Court to Any Willing Provider ("AWP") laws, and the deluge of recent benefits-related scandals are also all part of this landscape. This Article examines each of these issues, with a focus on reforms that would increase …
