The Institutionalization Of Service-Learning As A Pedagogical Tool For Campus Engagement At Public Versus Private Higher Education Institutions, Gwenda R. Greene Nov 2004

The Institutionalization Of Service-Learning As A Pedagogical Tool For Campus Engagement At Public Versus Private Higher Education Institutions, Gwenda R. Greene

Thesis, Dissertations, Student Creative Activity, and Scholarship

Historically, higher education institutions have charged departments such as Academic Affairs with students' academic growth, and Student Affairs with their social and emotional development. Where and how these two come together to engage the holistic development of students will differ widely among institutions. This research premise was to investigate a method that could help bridge Academic Affairs and Student Affairs areas. A comprehensive review of the literature on educational reforms in higher education delineates service-learning as an innovative pedagogy for impacting the holistic development of students while enhancing the scholarship of engagement throughout the institutions. This research outlines theories, principles, …

Evaluation Of The Current State Of Florida West Nile Surveillance Program As A Predictor For Control And Prevention Of Human West Nile Diseases, Angela E. Butler

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

West Nile is an important novel virus in the United States, having spread rapidly since it was first detected in New York in 1999. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as well as many State Health Departments, have mandated programs for surveillance of West Nile Virus activity. These programs incorporate many different aspects including existing arboserology programs with additional testing for West Nile Virus and new plans that incorporate active and passive surveillance methods.

The objective of this study was to examine all aspects of the Florida West Nile surveillance program to determine if there was transmission in the …

The Design Of The Edge As Cultural Activity: Towards A Dislocation Of The Greek Logos., Konstantinos Ioannidis Nov 2004

The Design Of The Edge As Cultural Activity: Towards A Dislocation Of The Greek Logos., Konstantinos Ioannidis

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The vital relation between coastline and human emotion has been projected within every possible rhetoric means (from poetry and painting to literature and cinema) but never before had this relation played the most affective role to our behavior than nowadays where cities are determined to return these areas back to citizens and restore all these notions-meanings that have, so violently, been removed from the urban waterfront as a result of the socio-economic changes of the last decades. But in most times this effort is muddied by amateurish attempts at generalization with standardized architectural practices which develop more or less customary …

Design How-To-Know: Towards A Domain-Specific Ontology., Frances Joseph Nov 2004

Design How-To-Know: Towards A Domain-Specific Ontology., Frances Joseph

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The title of this paper implies a repositioning of the notion of ‘design know how’ as tacit knowledge developed through practical experience into a questioning of the identity and being of design. This is not to valorise one form of knowing (through practice) over another (through cognition), but to imply a certain fuzziness about the definition, purpose and meaning of design. While this paper addresses issues of design, ontology and computation in relation to certain philosophical and theoretical positions, it is important to emphasise that my engagement comes from a practical involvement and concern with ‘design problems’ arising from the …

A Human-Computer Framework For Schema-Driven And Precedent-Driven Visual Analogy In Design., Wei Dai, Hernan Casakin Nov 2004

A Human-Computer Framework For Schema-Driven And Precedent-Driven Visual Analogy In Design., Wei Dai, Hernan Casakin

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The use of visual analogy is considered to be a most suitable aid for design problem solving. Reasoning by analogy deals with two main cognitive paradigms. The first one is concerned with schema-driven analogy, which is defined as the use of abstract experiential knowledge that can direct a design solution to a familiar problem type. The second paradigm has to do with precedent-driven analogy, and is distinguished by the use of a concrete prior design problem whose major components and its corresponding relationships could be explicitly mapped onto the problem at hand. In order to support the use of visual …

Determination Of Presence Within Virtual Space: Implications For Interface Design., Rebecca Bond Nov 2004

Determination Of Presence Within Virtual Space: Implications For Interface Design., Rebecca Bond

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper proposes that measuring and mapping perceptions of ‘presence’ (or, the experience of ‘place’ in ‘space’) may lead to a greater understanding of virtual or ‘cyber’ space experiences, and contribute to the theory of human computer interaction (HCI) and design theory. As the experimental design is focussed on how users perceive and interact in their virtual world in relation to the effect of place and space, an attempt will be made to decipher perceptions of the relatively new frontier of cyberspace, leading to new methods for representing this form of space.

Increasing Competitiveness Through The Application Of Product Design As Knowledge Creation Management., Jurie Groenewald Nov 2004

Increasing Competitiveness Through The Application Of Product Design As Knowledge Creation Management., Jurie Groenewald

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The business environment in the new millennium is becoming more competitive because of the new globalised economy and the resultant increase in customer expectations. In response, companies are increasing their competitiveness through more efficient and effective Knowledge Management (KM). Increasing a company’s competitiveness there-fore means increasing its knowledge base through inter alia innovation. The problem is that most existing KM systems are dependent on ad hoc occurrences of innovation. In contrast, the design process can systematically produce innovation and can therefore be used as a Knowledge Creation Management tool. The process whereby New Product Design systematically uses existing knowledge and …

Deconstruction Sites: An Interpretive Case Study Of The Design Of The Emerging Cultural Landscape., Vince Dziekan Nov 2004

Deconstruction Sites: An Interpretive Case Study Of The Design Of The Emerging Cultural Landscape., Vince Dziekan

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper will critique museum spaces as an “institution” of artistic practice and evaluate the designed relationship of art to space and its predispositions. The research will investigate how artworks are not only accommodated by the architectural realization of physical spaces but also by the way that their design (acting as a “framework”) structures types of resulting art practices that can be supported and privileged by those spaces. Recognizing the intertwining of such design concerns has implications that extend to artistic practice, curatorship and art history.

The Appalachian Model Teaching Consortium: Preparing Teachers For Rural Appalachia, Alvin C. Proffit, R. Paul Sale, Ann E. Alexander, Ruth S. Andrews Nov 2004

The Appalachian Model Teaching Consortium: Preparing Teachers For Rural Appalachia, Alvin C. Proffit, R. Paul Sale, Ann E. Alexander, Ruth S. Andrews

The Rural Educator

The Appalachian Model Teacher Consortium is a partnership involving Radford University, Wytheville Community College, and the Grayson County (Virginia) School System. Its purpose is to prepare highly qualified teachers for rural southwest Virginia. The model was developed in response to the growing teacher shortage facing school districts in rural southwest Virginia. Poorer, more rural districts often have weaker tax bases that provide limited, and at times inadequate, financial support for their school districts. This lack of local resources often results in lower salaries and benefits when compared to many districts that compete for the shrinking pool of potential teachers. Additionally, …

Memory Fix, Christopher James Jordan Nov 2004

Memory Fix, Christopher James Jordan

Theses

This thesis serves as the written accompaniment to the visual work comprising the exhibit: Memory Fix, examining notions of personal geography set within more generalized conceptions of place, memory and identity formation. Further, it explores the ambiguity between ways in which place is remotely documented versus intimately experienced. We live in a culture of displacement, where technologies paradoxically render far-away places more accessible, but also contribute to the distancing of the immediate and authentic. This displacement also extends to the world of image and depiction. Place-representations are emptied of original meanings and connotations through overexposure and mass circulation. Against …
