Understanding Ethno-Nationalism: Sikh Diasporic Imaginings In Southwest Michigan, Rory G. Mccarthy Apr 2004

Understanding Ethno-Nationalism: Sikh Diasporic Imaginings In Southwest Michigan, Rory G. Mccarthy

Masters Theses

Diaspora as a category is both useful and troublesome for researchers in the discipline of anthropology. It is useful, for it allows anthropologists to approach cultural studies from a position that recognizes flaws in the conception of culture as geographically bounded. Studying diasporic populations, therefore, enables anthropologists to apply new theoretical approaches to culture, without reifying and essentializing social practices. Conversely, using diaspora as a category can homogenize groups by glossing over differences in ethnicity, religion, and migratory expenence.

This study aims at bettering the understanding of diversity within a diasporic population by examining the role that religion plays in …

Automitografías: The Border Paradigm And Chicana/O Autobiography, Juan Velasco Apr 2004

Automitografías: The Border Paradigm And Chicana/O Autobiography, Juan Velasco

English

For Chicana/o cultural critics, the border paradigm has defined the boundaries of writing and experience in contemporary Chicana/o autobiography, and has constituted a valuable contribution to American Studies. In fact, the unique voices coming from Chicana/o autobiography are expressed through a network of cultural codes involving liminality and hybridity, the rewriting of borders, and the challenging of boundaries created by mainstream cultures and official truth. Based on this deep relationship of border paradigm, Chicana/o experience, and the writing and representation of that experience, in this article I will discuss the possibility of building an organic and systematic methodology for studying …

Recalibrating Copyright Law?: A Comment On The Supreme Court Of Canada's Decision In Cch Canadian Limited Et Al. V. Law Society Of Upper Canada, Teresa Scassa

Canadian Journal of Law and Technology

The Supreme Court of Canada’s unanimous decision in CCH Canadian Ltd. et. al. v. Law Society of Upper Canada marks a second recent decision by the Court that has major implications for the development of copyright law in Canada. In Théberge v. Galerie D’Art du Petit Champlain, the majority of the Court provided a significant articulation of the balance to be struck between the rights of creators and the rights of users of copyright-protected works. In doing so, it embraced an approach to copyright typical of U.S. copyright law in its heyday. The unanimous Court in CCH Canadian makes it …

Global Intellectual Property Protection As Viewed Through The European Community's Treatment Of Geographical Indications: What Lessons Can Trips Learn?, Jacqueline Nanci Land Apr 2004

Global Intellectual Property Protection As Viewed Through The European Community's Treatment Of Geographical Indications: What Lessons Can Trips Learn?, Jacqueline Nanci Land

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

The note examines the European Community's (EC) approach to geographical indications (GIs) and its implications for the TRIPS Agreement, highlighting the EC as a potential model for harmonizing intellectual property (IP) laws globally. It argues that while TRIPS has made significant strides in creating an international IP framework, challenges such as differing national priorities and the influence of industrialized nations hinder full harmonization. The EC's integrated system, particularly its handling of GIs, offers valuable lessons for addressing these challenges and achieving more effective global IP protection.

User Inputs: Importance Of And Satisfaction With Attributes Of The Cat Bus System, Steven F. Farshid

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Although studies of citizens' satisfaction with public services have been conducted in many cities on a variety of subjects, very limited empirical research has been conducted on mass transportation. Indeed, studies of financial impacts of mass transportation in urban areas do exist at length. Research on the environmental consequences of mass transit is quite abundant. However, studies on citizens' satisfaction of public transportation are limited. This study is designed to provide empirical data focusing on the importance of certain characteristics of the bus system and satisfaction or dissatisfaction with said characteristics within the Citizen Area Transit system (CAT) in the …

Invited And Invented Spaces Of Participation: Neoliberal Citizenship And Feminists' Expanded Notion Of Politics., Faranak Miraftab

Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies

This short conceptual piece calls for a careful rethinking of what feminist scholars have articulated as an expanded notion of politics: the notion that rejects the binary constructs of formal/informal, and demonstrates the significance of community-based activism as an informal arena of politics and citizenship construction. Introducing the interacting and mutually constitutive concepts of “invited” and “invented” spaces of citizenship, this essay urges recognition of the full range of spaces within the informal arena where citizenship is practiced. It warns of the risk arising from the literature’s limited focus on strategies of survival: namely, the likelihood of a bifurcated conceptualization …

Collision Avoidance: U.S.-Russian Bilateral Relations And Former Soviet States, Eugene B. Rumer Apr 2004

Collision Avoidance: U.S.-Russian Bilateral Relations And Former Soviet States, Eugene B. Rumer

Strategic Forums

This Strategic Forum policy brief analyzes the growing risk of tension between the United States and Russia as expanding U.S. political and military engagement in former Soviet states intersects with Moscow’s renewed determination to consolidate influence over its “near abroad.” After September 11, U.S. security involvement in Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, and Central Asia intensified in support of counterterrorism objectives and the sovereignty of newly independent states. Simultaneously, a broad Russian political consensus has emerged favoring an exclusive sphere of influence along its periphery and resisting long-term U.S. and NATO presence. These converging trajectories place U.S. and Russian policies on …

The Rhetoric Of The Frontier And The Frontier Of Rhetoric, Carly Kay Paul Apr 2004

The Rhetoric Of The Frontier And The Frontier Of Rhetoric, Carly Kay Paul

Theses and Dissertations

The definition of rhetoric has recently been expanded to include elements of experience, particularly the experiences that landscape provides. One landscape that has rhetorical significance is the American frontier, both in Colonial times and in the nineteenth century. The frontier had a rhetorical impact on women, in particular, giving them freedom to change their roles and achieve economic, political, and social success. Because of the tremendous significance of the frontier in women's lives, a new definition of frontiers emphasizes conditions such as opportunity for change, a dangerous and uncertain atmosphere, a freedom of thought and action, and an ability to …

Electronic Commerce - A Practitioner's Guide Edited By Alan M. Gahtan, Martin P.J. Kratz, And J. Fraser Mann (Toronto: Thomson Carwell, 2003), Harmonie Roesch-West

Canadian Journal of Law and Technology

At a time when there seems to be no clear consensus on how to regulate electronic commerce comes a much-needed discussion of the many salient factors impacting the matter in Electronic Commerce: A Practitioner’s Guide. The collaborative effort includes works from several authors, compiled by Alan M. Gahtan, Martin P.J. Kratz, and J. Fraser Mann. This guide is an excellent first step in clarifying the issues and summarizing the precedents and relevant statute law to date. Although the target is an audience of law professionals, other e-commerce stakeholders, including business pro- fessionals, will find this collection useful.

Drumbeats And Tides The Salvation Army Crestmont College A Better Model For Preparing Leaders In The Emerging Age, Raymond L. Peacock

Doctor of Ministry

Christian higher education in general and Salvation Army higher education Vll specifically are undergoing a learning revolution. Most organizations in general and The Salvation Anny specifically are simultaneously experiencing a leadership revolution. Crestmont College was given two mandates in 2000 and a third mandate in 2002 to address these two revolutions. But what is it about learning and leadership that the mandates need to address? Moving towards connecting transformative learning with transfonnationalleadership development within the context of an institution and an organization requires sorting out the structure, strategic plmming, and linking the plan to implementation. The dissertation works itselfthrough these …
