Using A Geographic Information System To Improve Special Sensor Microwave Imager Precipitation Estimates Over The Tibetan Plateau, Zhi-Yong Yin, Xiaodong Liu, Xueqin Zhang, Chih-Fang Chung

Environmental and Ocean Sciences: Faculty Scholarship

This study examines the potential of spatial modeling using geographic information systems (GIS) to improve the precipitation estimates based on Special Sensor Microwave/Imager (SSM/I) over the Tibetan Plateau. The monthly SSM/I precipitation estimates are based on the algorithm developed at the National Environmental Satellite, Data and Information Service (NESDIS) of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). When using SSM/I estimates to predict station precipitation directly, the R2 values ranged from 0.005 to 0.624, with a mean of 0.334 for all months. When terrain and location variables obtained from the GIS were added to the models, the R2 …

Proposal For No-Cost Extension And Re-Scope For Unlv Trp Project: Neutron Multiplicity Measurements For The Afci Program (Advanced Fuel Cycle Initiative), Denis Beller

Transmutation Sciences Physics (TRP)

The U.S. Advanced Fuel Cycle Initiative (AFCI) is a program to develop economic and environmental methods to reduce the impact of waste from commercial nuclear fuel cycles. One concept for near-complete destruction of waste isotopes from used nuclear fuel is accelerator-driven transmutation. High-power accelerators would be used to produce high-energy charged particles, which then collide with heavy metal targets to create a cascade of neutrons. These neutrons then cause a nuclear chain reaction in subcritical systems. Fission neutrons then transmute fissile waste isotopes as well as other problematic isotopes such as technetium-99 and iodine-129. To design these systems, complex reactor …

Effects Of Management Practices On Grassland Birds: Merlin, Paul M. Konrad Feb 2004

Effects Of Management Practices On Grassland Birds: Merlin, Paul M. Konrad

United States Geological Survey: Effects of Management Practices on Grassland Birds

Information on the habitat requirements and effects of habitat management on grassland birds were summarized from information in more than 5,500 published and unpublished papers. A range map is provided to indicate the breeding, year-round, and nonbreeding ranges in the United States and southern Canada. Although birds frequently are observed outside the breeding range indicated, the maps are intended to show areas where managers might concentrate their attention. It may be ineffectual to manage habitat at a site for a species that rarely occurs in an area. The species account begins with a brief capsule statement, which provides the fundamental …

Models represent our primary method for integration of small-scale, process-level phenomena into a comprehensive description of forest-stand or ecosystem function. They also represent a key method for testing hypotheses about the response of forest ecosystems to multiple changing environmental conditions. This paper describes the evaluation of 13 stand-level models varying in their spatial, mechanistic, and temporal complexity for their ability to capture intra- and interannual components of the water and carbon cycle for an upland, oak-dominated forest of eastern Tennessee. Comparisons between model simulations and observations were conducted for hourly, daily, and annual time steps. Data for the comparisons were …

The Biodiversity And Biogeochemistry Of Cryoconite Holes From Mcmurdo Dry Valley Glaciers, Antarctica, Dorota L. Porazinska, Andrew G. Fountain, Thomas H. Nylen, Martyn Tranter, Ross A. Virginia, Diana H. Wall Feb 2004

The Biodiversity And Biogeochemistry Of Cryoconite Holes From Mcmurdo Dry Valley Glaciers, Antarctica, Dorota L. Porazinska, Andrew G. Fountain, Thomas H. Nylen, Martyn Tranter, Ross A. Virginia, Diana H. Wall

Geography Faculty Publications and Presentations

Once thought of as inert, ice has been increasingly recognized as a habitat suitable for life. The landscape of the MCMurdo Dry Valleys (MCM) of Antarctica is dominated by glaciers, and glacier melt is the primary water source for life in soils, streams, and lakes. The glaciers, despite their cold and lifeless appearance, offer functioning habitats for life. The major objective of this study was to examine biogeochemical characteristics of miniecosystems present in cryoconite holes and to determine links to other components (soils, streams, and lakes) of the dry valley landscape. We examined cryoconite holes from 5 glaciers spanning the …

The Development Of A Service-Learning Curriculum At The University Of North Carolina At Greensboro, Donna Jeffers Brown Jan 2004

The Development Of A Service-Learning Curriculum At The University Of North Carolina At Greensboro, Donna Jeffers Brown

Theses and Dissertations

The purposes of this study were to (a) successfully create a required service component in an undergraduate course that specifically addresses service learning and (b) develop recommendations for implementation of community service experiences in an existing academic department curriculum. Students, faculty, higher education institutions, and professional organizations contributed numerous suggestions for successful institutionalization of service learning. Relating course content to meaningful service, developing partnerships with community agencies, and providing faculty with recognition for service courses contributed to successful service-learning programs. The results revealed barriers to participation in service-learning activities, such as student and faculty apathy, lack of administrative support, and …

Paleomagnetism And 40ar/39ar Chronology Of Lavas From Meseta Del Lago Buenos Aires, Patagonia, Laurie L. Brown, Brad S. Singer, Matthew L. Gorring Jan 2004

Paleomagnetism And 40ar/39ar Chronology Of Lavas From Meseta Del Lago Buenos Aires, Patagonia, Laurie L. Brown, Brad S. Singer, Matthew L. Gorring

Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

[1] As part of a larger project investigating paleosecular variation in South America, 36 paleomagnetic and geochronology sites were sampled on Meseta del Lago Buenos Aires (47°S, 289°E), 200 km east of the active plate boundary in southern Patagonia. Basaltic lavas sampled range from late Miocene to late Pleistocene yet most of the individual lavas are younger than 3.3 Ma. Thirty-eight isochron ages determined via 40Ar/39Ar incremental-heating experiments frame a detailed stratigraphy. The isochron ages range from 66.9 ± 4.1 ka for scoria cones and a youthful lava flow in the Rio Pinturas valley to 10.12 ± 1.35 Ma for …
