Converting Low-Level Mixed Waste Into Transuranic Waste For Geologic Disposal At Wipp: A Cost Analysis, Helen R. Neill, Robert H. Neill Mar 2004

Converting Low-Level Mixed Waste Into Transuranic Waste For Geologic Disposal At Wipp: A Cost Analysis, Helen R. Neill, Robert H. Neill

Public Policy and Leadership Faculty Research

The Department of Energy (DOE) has approximately 43,000 cubic meters of mixed-low-level waste (MLLW) with alpha emitting concentrations of 10 to 100 nanocuries per gram (nCi/g) generated from the nations defense programs requiring radioactive waste disposal [1]. DOE has decided to commingle MLLW containers with transuranic (TRU) waste containers in larger containers such that the average concentration in the larger container would qualify as TRU waste for deep geologic disposal at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP). Since Congress has exempted the WIPP mixed TRU waste from the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) [2] requirement to treat the waste …

Moving Beyond Conflict: Private Stewardship And Conservation Partnerships, Lynn Scarlett Mar 2004

Moving Beyond Conflict: Private Stewardship And Conservation Partnerships, Lynn Scarlett

Center for Applied Economics

Aldo Leopold, one of the nation’s greatest leaders in the early conservation movement, had a vision of a nation of citizen stewards. He eloquently imagined that each of us in our own backyards and communities would serve as stewards of our environment. Environmental progress, he opined, ultimately resides in the actions taken by each and every one of us.

Earth Day thirty years ago turned environmental aspirations toward Washington, D.C. In the wake of several notable events—the oil spill in Santa Barbara (my backyard), the Cuyahoga River in the Cleveland area catching fi re, and others—sent a wake up call …

A Critical Assessment Of Protection For Key Wildlife And Salmon Habitats Under The Proposed British Columbia Central Coast Land And Resource Management Plan, Paul C. Paquet, Chris T. Darimont, R. John Nelson, Katrina Bennett

Habitat Assessment and Management Collection

The Central Coast Land and Resource Management Plan (CCLRMP) table recently declared a consensus1 on proposed protected areas for British Columbia’s Central Coast. This region is recognized for its globally rare and largely intact mainland and island ecosystems and land use decisions should reflect this importance. We evaluated the efficacy of this proposal using a spatial assessment of habitat. We focus on protected areas in the context of the overall CCLRMP. We examined the level of protection provided by the CCLRMP in three key coastal habitats: deer winter range, wolf reproductive habitat, and salmon reproductive and rearing habitat. Assessment of …

Aerobic Biodegradation Of Alternative Fuel Oxygenates In Unsaturated Soil Columns, Kevin A. Mares Mar 2004

Aerobic Biodegradation Of Alternative Fuel Oxygenates In Unsaturated Soil Columns, Kevin A. Mares

Theses and Dissertations

Groundwater contamination problems caused by methyl-tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) in subsurface waters have prompted the search for a gasoline oxygenate replacement. In order to avoid the problems encountered with MTBE, it is prudent to evaluate the fate and transport in the subsurface of proposed replacements, such as ethanol. In this study, ethanol transport and degradation in unsaturated soil was investigated using a series of eight soil columns. This preliminary study was to see if the soil column system components functioned properly, how similarly the eight soil columns performed, and if soil oxygen concentration affected degradation of ethanol. Tracer tests, using …

Spatial Heterogeneity Of Crenarchaeal Assemblages Within Mesophilic Soil Ecosystems As Revealed By Pcr-Single-Stranded Conformation Polymorphism Profiling, Marek K. Sliwinski Mar 2004

Spatial Heterogeneity Of Crenarchaeal Assemblages Within Mesophilic Soil Ecosystems As Revealed By Pcr-Single-Stranded Conformation Polymorphism Profiling, Marek K. Sliwinski

Faculty Work

Microbial ecologists have discovered novel rRNA genes (rDNA) in mesophilic soil habitats worldwide, including sequences that affiliate phylogenetically within the division Crenarchaeota (domain Archaea). To characterize the spatial distribution of crenarchaeal assemblages in mesophilic soil habitats, we profiled amplified crenarchaeal 16S rDNA sequences from diverse soil ecosystems by using PCR-single-stranded-conformation polymorphism (PCR-SSCP) analysis. PCR-SSCP profiles provide a measure of relative microbial diversity in terms of richness (number of different phylotypes as estimated from the number of unique PCR-SSCP peaks) and evenness (abundance of each phylotype as estimated from the relative area under a peak). Crenarchaeal assemblages inhabiting prairie, forest, …

Exposure To The Dental Environment And Prevalence Of Respiratory Illness In Dental Student Populations, Frank A. Scannapieco, Alex W. Ho, Maris Ditolla, Casey Chen, Andrew R. Dentino

School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications

Objective: To determine if the prevalence of respiratory disease among dental students and dental residents varies with their exposure to the clinical dental environment.

Methods: A detailed questionnaire was administered to 817 students at 3 dental schools. The questionnaire sought information concerning demographic characteristics, school year, exposure to the dental environment and dental procedures, and history of respiratory disease. The data obtained were subjected to bivariate and multiple logistic regression analysis.

Results: Respondents reported experiencing the following respiratory conditions during the previous year: asthma (26 cases), bronchitis (11 cases), chronic lung disease (6 cases), pneumonia (5 cases) …

Species Diversity And Habitat Of Grassland Passerines During Grazing Of A Prescribe-Burned, Mixed-Grass Prairie, Robert F. Danley, Robert K. Murphy, Elizabeth M. Madden

Western North American Naturalist

No published data exist on responses of grassland passerines and their habitat to combined grazing and burning treatments in northern mixed-grass prairie. At Lostwood National Wildlife Refuge (LNWR) in northwestern North Dakota, we monitored breeding bird occurrence, abundance, and habitat during successive annual grazing treatments (1998–2000) on 5 prescribe-burned, mixed-grass prairie management units (range = 50–534 ha, each burned 3–6 times in the previous 10–20 years). All breeding passerine species characteristic of upland, northern mixed-grass prairie were common (>10% occurrence) during at least 1 of 3 years on burned and grazed units, except Chestnut-collared Longspur (Calcarius ornatus), …

Seqra Challenges: Court Creates New Rule On Statute Of Limitations, John R. Nolon, Jessica A. Bacher

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

The New York State Environmental Quality Review Act, known around the New York legal community as SEQRA, triggers any time a public action may have an adverse impact on the environment. The determinations of this process, intertwined with public actions such as, site plan approvals, variance requests, or any other land use or public action, are often challenged by those parties who are unsatisfied with the result. This article discusses the extensive case history regarding when SEQRA actions are ripe for legal challenge.

Wildlife Conservation Sunflower Plots As A Dual-Purpose Wildlife Management Strategy, George M. Linz, Dionn A. Schaaf, Philip Mastrangelo, H. Jeffrey Homan, Linda B. Penry, William J. Bleier Feb 2004

Wildlife Conservation Sunflower Plots As A Dual-Purpose Wildlife Management Strategy, George M. Linz, Dionn A. Schaaf, Philip Mastrangelo, H. Jeffrey Homan, Linda B. Penry, William J. Bleier

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

The National Sunflower Association has identified blackbird damage as a key reason for growers to abandon sunflower. In the 1980s, National Wildlife Research Center scientists showed that "decoy" p1antings of sunflower can significantly reduce bird damage to nearby commercial sunflower fields. For a variety of reasons, largely logistical and economic in nature, decoy sunflower fields did not become wide-spread. Over the last decade, new federal farm programs have placed more emphasis on wildlife conservation. Thus, decoy sunflower fields planted to ameliorate blackbird damage and establish habitat for wildlife might gamer broad support from both agricultural and conservation groups. We present …
