The Role And Structure Of Mediating Entities In University-Community Partnerships: An Examination Of Urban Routes, Mathew Spaan
The Role And Structure Of Mediating Entities In University-Community Partnerships: An Examination Of Urban Routes, Mathew Spaan
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines the use of mediating entities in overcoming barriers found in many university-community partnerships, which arise out of unequal power, a lack of mutual understanding, and divergent agendas of the partners. In order to develop a theory or model of the functions and structure of these mediating entities, this thesis analyzes the Urban Routes program of International Project for Nonprofit Leadership. This study identifies four main functions of mediating entities: integration, interpretation, equalization, and sustaining. This case study reveals the importance of structuring these mediating entities in a way that allows for the most effective utilization of the …

Planning and Urban Studies Reports and Presentations
Technology plays a vital role in public and private businesses, governments, and organizations, and can be especially useful to organizations that may know the least about it. Unfortunately, many Community Based Organizations (CBOs) have traditionally been unable to embrace contemporary tools due to lack of capacity, time or money. This paper begins to identify issues related to the technology gap faced by CBOs in a case study that examines community economic empowerment for the Dudley Street Neighborhood Initiative® (DSNI). The problem was approached through a community-university partnership between the Cornell University CRP 607 GIS Workshop Class (Sibley Consulting) and DSNI. …

Biodiesel: To Switch Or Not To Switch? A Greener Fuel Option For The Sjsu Shuttle Bus System, Olga Meydbray
Master's Projects
For the past several years the SJSU shuttle bus system has been the subject of anger from the residents living in the neighborhoods through which the shuttle buses travel several times daily. Individuals living in the Spartan-Keyes neighborhood, near the Spartan stadium, have been working with staff at the City of San Jose to reduce the amount of large truck and bus traffic in their neighborhood for several years.
The staff at the San Jose State University Police Department (UPD), the organization in charge of the campus shuttle bus system, is in a position to make a real difference in …

Brown, The Civil Rights Movement, And The Silent Litigation Revolution, Stephen C. Yeazell
Brown, The Civil Rights Movement, And The Silent Litigation Revolution, Stephen C. Yeazell
Vanderbilt Law Review
One doubts that Robert Carter, Thurgood Marshall, Spottswood Robinson, Jack Greenberg and the rest of the legal team that argued Brown v. Board of Education spent much time thinking about mass torts. Nonetheless, it is entirely appropriate that a commemoration of their achievements include not only that topic but also international human rights and health care, as well as the more expected ones of education and social welfare. Brown was part of a revolution, and revolutions often have collateral effects as important as their immediate consequences. The civil rights movement followed the same pattern.
As an immediate consequence, that movement …

Art And Democracy In Environmental Decision Making, Audrey Stewart
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Global doctrines on sustainable development emphasize public participation as a tenet of environmentally responsible development. Given the Czech government’s tepid stance towards implementing sustainability measures, much impetus for realizing them will have to come from other facets of Czech society, including the public. In spite of the nearly populist feel of a mounting environmental movement in the late 1980s, after the Velvet Revolution the Czech public remained relatively disengaged from environmental involvement. Traditional decision-making venues within the Czech Republic now actively exclude the public from participating, while other pressures stemming from history and present also diminish the public impetus for …

Suburban Sprawl, Jewish Law, And Jewish Values, Michael E. Lewyn
Suburban Sprawl, Jewish Law, And Jewish Values, Michael E. Lewyn
ExpressO
The article explains how automobile-dependent suburban sprawl is in conflict with Jewish law and Jewish values. This is so in three ways. First, Jewish law requires Jews to make the poor self-supporting- but suburban sprawl creates welfare dependency by making it impossible for poor people without cars to reach jobs in auto-dependent suburbs. Second, Jewish law requires Jews to walk rather than ride to services on holy days- but in most low-density suburbs, very few people can live within walking distance of a synagogue (or anything else for that matter). Third, Jewish law has traditionally discouraged development of rural land …
