Infinite Prandtl Number Limit Of Rayleigh-Bénard Convection, Xiaoming Wang Oct 2004

Infinite Prandtl Number Limit Of Rayleigh-Bénard Convection, Xiaoming Wang

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We rigorously justify the infinite Prandtl number model of convection as the limit of the Boussinesq approximation to the Rayleigh-Bénard convection as the Prandtl number approaches infinity. This is a singular limit problem involving an initial layer. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Beyond Currywurst And Döner: The Role Of Food In German Multicultural Literature And Society, Heike Henderson Oct 2004

Beyond Currywurst And Döner: The Role Of Food In German Multicultural Literature And Society, Heike Henderson

World Languages Faculty Publications and Presentations

After outlining some striking similarities between ethnic food marketing and multicultural literature, I intend to analyze the role of food in contemporary German literature and society. Specifically, I will look at two texts by Rafik Schami ("Kebab ist Kultur") and Uwe Timm (Die Entdeckung der Currywurst). In both of these texts, food plays a crucial role. In "Kebab ist Kultur," food is a marker of difference and alterity. In Die Entdeckung der Currywurst, food is the impetus to trace history - personal history as well as the history of postwar Germany. Questions related to cultural differences, history, and …

Unearthing Threshold: [Re]Creating History In Boston's South End, Maggie L. Cookman Oct 2004

Unearthing Threshold: [Re]Creating History In Boston's South End, Maggie L. Cookman

Architecture Thesis Prep

"This thesis contends that architecture can act as a unifier and agent of interaction by conveying historical conditions within a modern context, through which the awareness of historical relationships occurs. Through this thesis, the intention will be to investigate how history can be revealed through architectural form and one's perception of the juxtaposition of past and present."

Balancing Scales Of Environment And Activity, Justin Matthew Feit Oct 2004

Balancing Scales Of Environment And Activity, Justin Matthew Feit

Architecture Thesis Prep

"What we build is outlined by the context in which we live and work. It can be informed/described by ranges of area (man-made or natural), social intensity or isolation, and program. It is my contention that design should balance between the existing scales and degrees of these topics."

Process Informing Form, Kiera Phillips Oct 2004

Process Informing Form, Kiera Phillips

Architecture Thesis Prep

"Looking at industrial processes and their respective architecture, specifically steels mills, the process housed within the architecture begins to inform the spatial qualities of the structures. The process of steelmaking starts to exhibit itself in the built forms of the steel mill: the ducting of the blast furnace, the exhaust systems of the basic oxygen furnace, the drawn out sheds of rolling mills. Currently, both process and forms of steelmaking have been removed from the site, To fill this void, I propose a new process that creates this relationship between the act of "making" and form."

Experiencing An Education: Principle And Form, Matthew T. Ahlberg Oct 2004

Experiencing An Education: Principle And Form, Matthew T. Ahlberg

Architecture Thesis Prep

"The question being investigated deals with the issue of how architecture can become the primary teaching mechanism in an educational environment and what the built forms that evolve form this approach to teaching and its relation to the built environment will take on when considered in relation to existing artistic and architectural models later on in the design process"

Gateway To Interaction, Adam C. Mcwilliams Oct 2004

Gateway To Interaction, Adam C. Mcwilliams

Architecture Thesis Prep

"American cities presently face a moment of truth. While traditional city centers continue to signify established culture, science, education, and finance, in almost every city crucial sections of originally thriving city centers have persistently decreased as a location of interaction.

The regional city, if it is to sustain itself and maintain any diversity of architecture, density, and most importantly interaction, will need to accommodate a broad range of speeds, scales, and means of movement in both directions to reactivate the city center."

Intertwined Boundaries, Naomi Susman Oct 2004

Intertwined Boundaries, Naomi Susman

Architecture Thesis Prep

"This thesis will explore ways in which a narrative experience influenced by tradition and cultural exchange serves to stimulate and depict one's understanding of the collaborative product of technique, design, and social movement."

The phoneme /1/ (as calle=street, apellido=last name, Have= key or caballo= horse) has disappeared in many zones of Spanish America to give place to the "yeismo", a linguistic phenomenon characterized by the predominance of the /y/ over other phonemes like /1/. Because of this, the word calle is pronounced caye, apellido=apeyido, Ilave=yave and caballo=cabayo.

Afterschool Matters Occasional Paper Fall/Winter 2004, National Institute On Out-Of-School Time

Afterschool Matters

The Four Cs of Afterschool Programming A New Case Method for a New Field
By Gil G. Noam, Ed.D., Ph.D. (Habil) with Susanna Barry, Lisa Wahl Moellman, Leigh van Dyken, Carol Palinski, Nina Fiore, and Rob McCouch
Growing public and policy interest in the use of afterschool time has led to a need for research methods that allow investigators and stakeholders to examine and refine program models and activities. The case study method offers promise for afterschool research, but case study models must be refined in order to adequately study afterschool programming, which is characterized by collaboration among numerous stakeholders. …

Women's Studies University Of Nebraska-Lincoln Fall 2004, Joy Ritchie, Carmel Morse

Women's and Gender Studies Program: Information and Materials

I'm delighted to be introducing several newly appointed Women's Studies faculty in the pages of this newsletter and to welcome Rose Holz as the associate director. Rose has been invaluable to all of us this fall helping with independent studies, advising, planning activities, and serving as faculty advisor for the Women's Studies Student Association.

The Women's Studies faculty began this semester with a retreat where we considered future directions for the program. Several very energetic groups planned curriculum revisions and additions, considered changes in the structure of our program and updated and revised our by-laws; another group brainstormed potential research …

Law Student Field Projects In Community Law, Fran Ansley

College of Law Faculty Scholarship

This website is an exhibition of student work. It features selected projects in which my law students at the University of Tennessee have collaborated with people in under-represented communities. Many projects have centered on research and innovative education for lay people about some aspect of law or the legal system. In other projects, law students have helped to frame and make justice claims - sometimes focused on relief for individuals, more often seeking a change in social policy.
