Representations Of Anglo-Saxon England In Children's Literature, Kirsti A. Bobo Dec 2004

Representations Of Anglo-Saxon England In Children's Literature, Kirsti A. Bobo

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis surveys the children's literary accounts of Anglo-Saxon history and literature that have been written since the mid-nineteenth century. Authors of different ages emphasize different aspects of Anglo-Saxon culture as societal need for and interpretation of the past change. In studying these changes, I show not only why children's authors would choose to depict the Saxons in their writing, but why medievalists would want to study the resulting literature.

My second chapter looks at children's historical fiction and nonfiction, charting the trends which appear in the literature written between 1850 and the present day. I survey the changes made …

Public Health Nursing Acceptance Of The 5 A’S Protocol For Prenatal Smoking Cessation, Jihong Liu Dec 2004

Public Health Nursing Acceptance Of The 5 A’S Protocol For Prenatal Smoking Cessation, Jihong Liu

Faculty Publications

Oregon’s efforts in tobacco cessation have historically focused on the general population and have depended on quit line services as the primary intervention. The Oregon Smoke Free Mothers and Babies Program (SFMB) was developed in 2002 to focus on public health nurses and prenatal care providers who work with high risk pregnant women. It seeks to increase smoking cessation among low income and other high risk pregnant women by disseminating the U.S. Public Health Service best practices, the 5 A’s (Ask, Advise, Assess, Assist, Arrange) tobacco brief intervention protocol, to public health nurses and prenatal care providers. Interventions included teaching …

Three Studies Of Problem Solving In Collaborative Software Development, Madeline Ann Domino Dec 2004

Three Studies Of Problem Solving In Collaborative Software Development, Madeline Ann Domino

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A potential solution to producing quality software in an acceptable time frame may be found by using the newer, innovative methods, such as collaborative software development. The purpose of this dissertation is to examine the individual developer characteristics, developmental settings, collaborative methods and the processes during development that impact collaborative programming performance and satisfaction outcomes.

Understanding individual differences in performance in the collaborative development setting is important, since it may help us understand how the collaborative setting may raise the lowest level of performance to much higher levels, as well as how to select individuals for collaborative development. Exploring the …

The Best Interest Standard: How Broad Judicial Discretion And Influences Of Social And Political Suggestion Have Led To An Abandonment Of The Rule’S Primary Purpose In Child Custody Decisions, Lakeisha J. Johnson Dec 2004

The Best Interest Standard: How Broad Judicial Discretion And Influences Of Social And Political Suggestion Have Led To An Abandonment Of The Rule’S Primary Purpose In Child Custody Decisions, Lakeisha J. Johnson

ExpressO

The vital questions in child custody disputes all concern that which is in the best interest of the child. Historically, interpretations of the “best interest” standard have been founded upon presumptions steeped in the notion of natural rights and duties based largely upon a mix of scientific and subjective conclusions regarding gender-based parenting roles and the need to sustain them. My research demonstrates that, as courts attempt to avoid the decisions of the past and submit to the societal will of the present, the modern application of the “best interest of the child” standard has led unexpectedly to an abandonment …

Indisciplina Escolar, Gênero E Sexualidade: Práticas De Punição E Produção De Identidades, Maria De Fátima Salum Moreira, Lilian Piorkowsky Dos Santos

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

This paper presents the results of a research where the phenomenon of indiscipline was problematized approaching its possible relationship with the production of gender identities, in and through school. By means of interviews and direct observation, in classes of the 8th grade of a school was carried out a study about the (male and female) teachers’ attitudes towards what they consider their pupils’ indiscipline (which are teenagers, about 13 / 14 years old). ...

Implementation Of The Load Balancing Algorithm Over A Local Area Network And The Internet, Chaouki T. Abdallah, J. Ghanem, M. Hayat, S. Dhakal, J.D. Birdwell, J. Chiasson, Z. Tang Dec 2004

Implementation Of The Load Balancing Algorithm Over A Local Area Network And The Internet, Chaouki T. Abdallah, J. Ghanem, M. Hayat, S. Dhakal, J.D. Birdwell, J. Chiasson, Z. Tang

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

In this paper, experimental evaluation of the load balancing algorithm in real environments is presented. We emphasize the effects of delays on the exchange of information among nodes, and the constraints these effects impose on the design of a load balancing strategy. Two testbeds in two different real environments have been built; the first implementation was over a local area network whereas the second was over Planet-Lab. The results show the effect of network delays and variances in the task processing time on choosing adequate gain values for the load balancing algorithm.

The Kidney-Specific Wnk1 Isoform Is Induced By Aldosterone And Stimulates Epithelial Sodium Channel-Mediated Na+ Transport, Anikó Naray-Fejes-Toth, Peter M. Snyder, Géza Fejes-Toth Dec 2004

The Kidney-Specific Wnk1 Isoform Is Induced By Aldosterone And Stimulates Epithelial Sodium Channel-Mediated Na+ Transport, Anikó Naray-Fejes-Toth, Peter M. Snyder, Géza Fejes-Toth

Dartmouth Scholarship

WNK1 belongs to a unique family of Ser/Thr kinases that have been implicated in the control of blood pressure. Intronic deletions in the WNK1 gene result in its overexpression and lead to pseudohypoaldosteronism type II, a disease with salt-sensitive hypertension and hyperkalemia. How overexpression of WNK1 leads to Na+ retention and hypertension is not entirely clear. Similarly, there is no information on the hormonal regulation of expression of WNK kinases. There are two main WNK1 transcripts expressed in the kidney: the originally described “long” WNK1 and a shorter transcript that is specifically expressed in the kidney (KS-WNK1). The goal …

New Product Launch Decisions Under Competition And Uncertainty: A Real Options And Game-Theoretic Approach To New Product Development, James O. Ostler

Theses and Dissertations

New product development is central to many firms' future success. Not only as a means to continue to maintain their piece of the market, but product development can also be a strategic means for a company to diversify, and/or alter focus to adapt to changing market conditions.

Most of the research in new product development has been on how to do it cheaper and faster than the next guy. However, early commercialization does not guarantee a position of strength in the market. Failures of EMI in CT scanners and Xerox in personal computers illustrate that being first to market does …

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Relations among job stressors, leadership style, emotional reactions to work, counterproductive work behavior (CWB), and autonomy were investigated. Participants representing a wide variety of jobs were surveyed. Results indicate that transactional leadership style is related to negative emotions and occurrence of CWB. Relationships between variables were mediated by emotions.

The Advanced Placement Expansion Of The 1990s: How Did Traditionally Underserved Students Fare?, Kristin Klopfenstein Dec 2004

The Advanced Placement Expansion Of The 1990s: How Did Traditionally Underserved Students Fare?, Kristin Klopfenstein

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

The College Board’s Advanced Placement (AP) Program, which allows students to take college-level courses while in high school, enjoyed tremendous growth in the 1990s. Despite overall growth, small rural schools and high poverty schools continue to offer relatively few AP courses, and black, Hispanic, and low income students remain grossly underrepresented in AP classes. During the 1990s, AP incentive programs primarily subsidized test fees for low income students, but this provided no incentive for low income and rural schools to expand their AP course offerings and did nothing to strengthen the weak academic preparation of low income, black and Hispanic …
