Construction Of Male Identity : The Relationship Between Cancer Support Groups And Identity For Men Who Are Living With Cancer, Kathryn M. Chegwidden Jan 2004

Construction Of Male Identity : The Relationship Between Cancer Support Groups And Identity For Men Who Are Living With Cancer, Kathryn M. Chegwidden

Theses : Honours

A diagnosis of cancer may have many meanings for a man in terms of the impact that cancer has on various aspects of his life, including his identity as a man. Subsequent membership of a cancer support group may support men negotiating their changing identity. A review of the relevant literature examines the impact of cancer and its treatments for men, and the various changes resulting from men's experiences with cancer and cancer treatments. A Comparative Study Of Sports Orientated And Non-Sports Orientated People's Perceptions Of The Appropriateness Of Alcohol Sponsorship Within Sport, Sharee Wilton Jan 2004

A Comparative Study Of Sports Orientated And Non-Sports Orientated People's Perceptions Of The Appropriateness Of Alcohol Sponsorship Within Sport, Sharee Wilton

Theses : Honours

This study examines people's perceptions of alcohol sponsorship in sport. Alcohol consumption and sport are closely linked as part of Australian culture and alcohol companies are major sponsors in Australian sport. This study explores any differences of opinion on alcohol sports sponsorship between sports orientated, somewhat sports orientated and non-sports orientated people. A continuum was used to determine where an individual fits between sports orientation and non-sports orientation. The study identified underlying influences that effect people's perception, such as personal participation in sport or having immediate family involved in sport. The study focused on Edith Cowan University students due to …

An Exploration Of The Impact Of The Family Court Process On 'Invisible' Stepparents, Natalie Gately Jan 2004

An Exploration Of The Impact Of The Family Court Process On 'Invisible' Stepparents, Natalie Gately

Theses : Honours

The increase of divorce in Australia is creating a social phenomenon for family researchers. Many families resolve disputes regarding children in the Family Courts, however due to the protracted litigation process many partners will have repartnered. Little is understood about how bureaucratic systems impact upon the experience of stepparents. These decisions might very well impact on the stepparents own new lifestyle and relationship, placing an additional burden on themselves and the stepfamily. The purpose of this review is to explore the literature pertaining to the issues surrounding repartnering and the Family Court process in order to illustrate how this invisibility …

Qos Routing Optimization Strategy Using Genetic Algorithm In Optical Fiber Communication Networks, Zhaoxia Wang, Zengqiang Chen, Zhuzhi Yuan Jan 2004

Qos Routing Optimization Strategy Using Genetic Algorithm In Optical Fiber Communication Networks, Zhaoxia Wang, Zengqiang Chen, Zhuzhi Yuan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper describes the routing problems in optical fiber networks, defines five constraints, induces and simplifies the evaluation function and fitness function, and proposes a routing approach based on the genetic algorithm, which includes an operator [OMO] to solve the QoS routing problem in optical fiber communication networks. The simulation results show that the proposed routing method by using this optimal maintain operator genetic algorithm (OMOGA) is superior to the common genetic algorithms (CGA). It not only is robust and efficient but also converges quickly and can be carried out simply, that makes it better than other complicated GA.

Analysis Of A Yield Management Model For On Demand Computing Centers, Yezekael Hayel, Laura Wynter, Parijat Dube Jan 2004

Analysis Of A Yield Management Model For On Demand Computing Centers, Yezekael Hayel, Laura Wynter, Parijat Dube

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The concept of yield management for IT infrastructures, and in particular for on demand IT utilities was recently introduced in [17]. The present paper provides a detailed analysis of that model, both in simplified cases where an analytical analysis is possible, and numerically on larger problem instances, and confirms the significant revenue benefit that can accrue through use of yield management in an IT on demand operating environment.

Strikes Through The Prism Of Duties: Is There A Fundamental Duty To Strike Under The Indian Constitution?, Shubhankar Dam Jan 2004

Strikes Through The Prism Of Duties: Is There A Fundamental Duty To Strike Under The Indian Constitution?, Shubhankar Dam

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

Much of the debates on the legality of strikes under the Indian Constitution has been on the issue of a right to strike. This paper argues that the constitutionality of strikes may be analysed through the prism of duties, i.e. fundamental duties under Part IVA of the Constitution. Strikes were an integral part of the ideals that inspired India's national struggle against imperialism. And, in this sense, when article 51A exhorts Indians to cherish and follow the noble ideals that inspired our freedom struggle, it includes a fundamental duty to strike. Invoking the philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi, the paper argues …

Peoples Union For Civil Liberties V Union Of India: Is Indian Democracy Dependent On A Statute?, Shubhankar Dam Jan 2004

Peoples Union For Civil Liberties V Union Of India: Is Indian Democracy Dependent On A Statute?, Shubhankar Dam

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

What is the status of a right to vote in the Indian legal system? Is the right a constitutional/fundamental right? Or is it simply a statutory right? Contrary to the decisions of the Supreme Court in the last five decades, this paper argues that the right to vote is a constitutional right: its textual foundation may be located in Article 326. And, in this sense, the Supreme Court has erred in construing the right to vote as a statutory right under the Representation of Peoples Act, 1951. Interpreting the right to vote as a statutory right has larger implications for …

Children's Efl Motivation: An Investigation Of 7-12 Year Old Students In Training Schools In China, Daosheng Liao Jan 2004

Children's Efl Motivation: An Investigation Of 7-12 Year Old Students In Training Schools In China, Daosheng Liao

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

English training schools in China are a new EFL phenomenon and infromation about EFL for 7-12 year old students is also new. There appears to be little research done regarding their motivation to learn EFL, and this constitutes a gap in theory addressing this area. This research attempts to fill the gap by investigating the factors that affect the motivation of learners in this age group. Questionnaires wers administered to 200 students and the responses were analysed to establish the motivational factors associated with learning English in training schools in Xi'an, China.
