Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

In the early 1950s, when President Harry S. Truman called upon the scholarly community to undertake the publication of the papers of individuals important to an understanding of American history, Henry Laurens of South Carolina was among the 112 figures recommended. Laurens was not well known to twentieth-century historians outside of South Carolina even though he had held several prestigious appointments on a national level. Indeed, one of the goals of the Laurens Papers was to rescue him from an undeserved obscurity, and it is certain that the superb sixteen volume edition of Laurens's papers, published for the South Carolina …

Assessing Learning Style Differences Between Honors And Non-Honors Students, Scott Carnicom, Michael Clump Oct 2004

Assessing Learning Style Differences Between Honors And Non-Honors Students, Scott Carnicom, Michael Clump

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

What defines an “honors” student and what key differences, if any, exist between honors and non-honors students? One obvious difference exists in measures of academic achievement; college honors students, by virtue of typical admission criteria, have higher GPA’s and standardized test scores (Long & Lange, 2002). Consistent with these higher academic credentials, honors students have often been described as more autonomous, more responsible, and more motivated (Grangaard, 2003; Orban & Chalifoux, 2002; Palmer & Wohl, 1972). Additionally, honors students tend to demonstrate to a greater degree many behaviors that positively correlate with academic performance, such as skipping class less often, …

Qualities Honours Students Look For In Faculty And Courses, Marca V.C. Wolfensberger

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

The main research questions that we answer in this article are: What are characteristics of honors students and how do they value teachers and courses? Does our theory-based learning context, which is supportive of autonomy, competence, and relatedness, actually correspond to the preferences of our honors students?

Emotional Intelligence And The Honors Student, Laird Edman Oct 2004

Emotional Intelligence And The Honors Student, Laird Edman

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

Over the past decade the construct of emotional intelligence has captured the public imagination and become a hot topic in the popular media. While the extravagant claims for the importance of emotional intelligence have little empirical support, evidence has been growing for the existence of the construct. This study is an attempt to relate emotional intelligence to the decision of first-year college students to enroll in an honors program.

A measure of emotional intelligence was devised made up of four different Likert-type scales measuring different components of the construct. These scales were administered to 72 freshman students at a selective, …

Review Of Preserving The Sacred: Historical Perspectives On Ojibwa Midewiwin By Michael Angel, Katherine Pettipas Oct 2004

Review Of Preserving The Sacred: Historical Perspectives On Ojibwa Midewiwin By Michael Angel, Katherine Pettipas

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

This volume is a critical historiography of the nature and meaning of the Midewiwin as it was, and still is, practiced by southwestern, western, and northern Anishinaabeg (Ojibwa or Chippewa) in both Canada and the United States. A self-described "culturally sensitive outsider," Angel has approached his subject from an interdisciplinary perspective, drawing heavily from religious studies and historic and ethnographic documentation. The origins and functions of the Midewiwin are examined within the contexts of Anishinaabeg religion and society. Angel takes issue with the classification of the Midewiwin as a "revitalization movement" or a "crisis cult" by demonstrating that the "essential …

East European Women And The Battle Of The Sexes In American Culture, Nanda Dimitrov Oct 2004

East European Women And The Battle Of The Sexes In American Culture, Nanda Dimitrov

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

How do women from patriarchal cultures adapt to gender equality and feminism in the Great Plains? How do women from Eastern Europe change as a result of living in a gender-neutral environment? The study (I) identifies the major cultural differences that Eastern European women perceive between gender-related norms in Eastern Europe and the American Midwest, (2) examines the strategies that women use to cope with these differences, and (3) investigates when encounters with American feminists help and when they hinder immigrants' adaptation.

Eastern European culture is characterized by a greater separation of gender roles and little concern about sexism. Women …

Chasing A Gendered Agenda: Collaboration And Team Teaching In Higher Education, Dana Christman, Barbara N. Martin, William W. Lockwood

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

This case study sought to characterize and give voice to women faculty working in collaboration and team teaching with male faculty in a higher education setting. The experiences of the women, as well as how they made sense of their experiences are presented. Then, cast against the framework of Feminist Phase Theory, particular attention is paid to the structure, climate, and culture of the work experience. The significance of the study is found in the multiple realities of women faculty members' experiences, and in the suggestions provided for improving the chances of success for female and male faculty to collaboratively …

The Effects Of Gender And Regional Dialect On Performance In Aviation Communication, Erin E. Mccollum

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The purpose of this study was to analyze the performance effects of gender and regional dialect on air traffic control statement recall. Sixty-one student volunteers participated in the experiment. Thirty-one participants held a pilot’s license and 30 participants had no flight experience. Each participant listened to one CD with 60 ATC statements each representing a male and female voice and New England, Southern, and General American dialect. Participants were asked to recall exactly what they heard. If the participant could not understand what they heard, they requested a repeat. The participant’s performance was recorded to CD and analyzed. Demographic questionnaires …

Detection And Quantitation Of Bovine Respiratory Syncytial Virus Using Real-Time Quantitative Rt-Pcr And Quantitative Competitive Rt-Pcr Assays, Jenna Achenbaum, Christina L. Topliff, Ventzislav B. Vassilev, Ruben O. Donis, Kent M. Eskridge, Clayton L. Kelling Oct 2004

Detection And Quantitation Of Bovine Respiratory Syncytial Virus Using Real-Time Quantitative Rt-Pcr And Quantitative Competitive Rt-Pcr Assays, Jenna Achenbaum, Christina L. Topliff, Ventzislav B. Vassilev, Ruben O. Donis, Kent M. Eskridge, Clayton L. Kelling

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

A single tube, fluorogenic probe-based, real-time quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (Q-RT-PCR) assay was developed for detection and quantitation of bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV) using BioRad’s iCycler iQ™. Real-time Q-RT-PCR was compared with quantitative competitive RT-PCR (QC-RT-PCR) and viral titers. Viral mRNA levels were measured in BRSV-infected bovine turbinate cell lysate harvested at eight time points (1.5, 6, 12, 24, 36, 48, 60, 72 h) post-infection. A homologous BRSV cRNA standard was used for quantitation of the mRNA by plotting a standard curve of cycle threshold (Ct) values versus standard 10-fold dilutions of cRNA of known concentrations. Detection as …

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

The activation, localization, phenotypic changes, and function of CFSE-labeled naive influenza-specific CD8+ and CD4+ T cells following influenza infection were examined. Response of adoptively transferred CD8+ T cells was seen earliest in draining lymph node. Highly activated cells were found later in the lung, airways, and spleen, were cytolytic, and expressed IFN-γ upon restimulation. Similar amounts of division at early time points, but higher numbers of CD8+ T cells, were detected at 9 and 30 days postinfection after cotransfer of CD4+ and CD8+ T cells followed by infection. Transfer of much smaller numbers of …

Rights, Rationality, And The Preemption Of Reasons, Richard Warner Oct 2004

Rights, Rationality, And The Preemption Of Reasons, Richard Warner

Chicago-Kent Law Review

This Article rejects the following Comparative Conception of rationality: namely, an action is rational only if it can be justified by showing that the reasons for it are better than (or at least as good as) the reasons against it. The Comparative Conception is inconsistent with moral rights, at least on one widespread understanding of such rights. The incommensurability of reasons is the key both to seeing why the Comparative Conception is false and to understanding the kinds of constraints on action moral rights impose.

The Relationships Of Teachers' Levels Of Technology Integration On Student Achievement In Reading And Mathematics, Valerie S. Fields

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine to what extent the level of technology integration of fourth and eighth grade teachers in eleven rural school districts in northeastern Louisiana related to student achievement in reading and mathematics.

The sample consisted of 123 fourth and eighth grade teachers and their students from the eleven rural school districts in northeastern Louisiana. Fifty-eight percent of the teachers represented the fourth grade and 42% of the teachers represented the eighth grade. The teachers served a school age population in which 20% or more was from families with incomes below the poverty line.

Sense -Based Text Classification By Semantic Hierarchy Representation, Xiaogang Peng Oct 2004

Sense -Based Text Classification By Semantic Hierarchy Representation, Xiaogang Peng

Doctoral Dissertations

Automatic classification of web pages is an effective way to facilitate the process of retrieving information from the Internet. Currently, two major classification methods are used in this area: keyword-based classification and sense-based classification. For keyword-based classification, keywords often have different semantic meanings, and the correct keyword matching is largely based on using exactly the same keywords. Thus, the classification results of keyword-based classification are not always satisfying. Many sense-based classification algorithms and systems have been presented, but they pay little attention to the relationship between senses. In this dissertation, we present a method to automatically classify documents based on …

Vilhelm Hammershøi, Auguste Renoir, And The Problem Of Innovation, Robert Jensen Oct 2004

Vilhelm Hammershøi, Auguste Renoir, And The Problem Of Innovation, Robert Jensen

Art and Visual Studies Presentations

Consider the following eulogy offered the Danish painter, Vilhelm Hammershøi, by one of his own countrymen upon the artist’s untimely death in 1916. “Renoir is an artist for the entire world; Hammershøi, name and repute notwithstanding, only for a small country.”1 The Danish critic offered no criteria for his judgment; it was too obvious to him. Even in his own country Hammershøi could be no more than a minor artist. His diminished posthumous reputation within the history of art might be summed up by the decision in 1931 of the director of the Statens Museum in Copenhagen to return a …

Drifting Down The Dnieper With Prince Potemkin: Some Skeptical Reflections About The Place Of Compliance Programs In Federal Criminal Sentencing (Symposium), Frank O. Bowman Iii Oct 2004

Drifting Down The Dnieper With Prince Potemkin: Some Skeptical Reflections About The Place Of Compliance Programs In Federal Criminal Sentencing (Symposium), Frank O. Bowman Iii

Faculty Publications

This Article explains how the federal organizational sentencing guidelines work and how they have created incentives for businesses to set up compliance programs. It then considers the paucity of evidence that compliance programs actually prevent the occurrence of corporate crime. It also questions whether investments in compliance programs make sense even for companies caught in a federal criminal investigation. There is little evidence that compliance programs have any significant effect on the likelihood that federal prosecutors will file criminal charges in the first instance. Even more surprisingly, examination of U.S. Sentencing Commission statistics reveals that the compliance program movement seems …

Fear And Risk In 'Times Of Crisis': The Media's Challenge, Richard C. Reuben Oct 2004

Fear And Risk In 'Times Of Crisis': The Media's Challenge, Richard C. Reuben

Faculty Publications

As we have heard time and again during this conference, perspective is a crucial safeguard against the distorting effect of fear. While space and consumer patience may be thin, it is during times of crisis that the media's capacity to provide context becomes most important. This is part of the challenge of risk communication. Editors need to insist on this perspective rather than trying to cut it out if the story still reads, and reporters need to learn how to write about it effectively as well as compellingly. None of these challenges is easy. Institutional reform never is. But I …

Multi-Culturalism In Ireland: Examining The Context Of And Debates Surrounding The Citizenship Referendum, Melanie Todman Oct 2004

Multi-Culturalism In Ireland: Examining The Context Of And Debates Surrounding The Citizenship Referendum, Melanie Todman

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

In this paper, I hope to explore Irish reactions to multi-culturalism through the highly controversial citizenship referendum. This referendum, through which the twenty-seventh amendment to the Irish Constitution will be made, is fundamentally changing Ireland’s citizenship policy from one of jus soli and jus sanguinis to one of just jus sanguinis. This change has been made amid current inflows of immigrants, many of whom are racially distinct and come from a variety of cultural backgrounds. The framing question for this paper is: Like other European countries, Ireland is making the transition from a racially homogenous society to a more heterogenous …
