Traditionally, synthetic imagery has been constructed to simulate images captured with low resolution, nadirviewing sensors. Advances in sensor design have driven a need to simulate scenes not only at higher resolutions but also from oblique view angles. The primary efforts of this research include: real image capture, scene construction and modeling, and validation of the synthetic imagery in the reflective portion of the spectrum. High resolution imagery was collected of an area named MicroScene at the Rochester Institute of Technology using the Chester F. Carlson Center for Imaging Science’s MISI and WASP sensors using an oblique view angle. Three Humvees, …

Surface And Buried Landmine Scene Generation And Validation Using The Digital Imaging And Remote Sensing Image Generation Model, Erin D. Peterson, Scott D. Brown, Timothy J. Hattenberger, John R. Schott

Articles

Detection and neutralization of surface-laid and buried landmines has been a slow and dangerous endeavor for military forces and humanitarian organizations throughout the world. In an effort to make the process faster and safer, scientists have begun to exploit the ever-evolving passive electro-optical realm, both from a broadband perspective and a multi or hyperspectral perspective. Carried with this exploitation is the development of mine detection algorithms that take advantage of spectral features exhibited by mine targets, only available in a multi or hyperspectral data set. Difficulty in algorithm development arises from a lack of robust data, which is needed to …

Membrane Lipid Biosynthesis In Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii: Ethanolaminephosphotransferase Is Capable Of Synthesizing Both Phosphatidylcholine And Phosphatidylethanolamine, Wenyu Yang, James V. Moroney, Thomas S. Moore Oct 2004

Moore

Faculty Publications

Phosphatidylethanolamine, but not phosphatidylcholine, is found in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. A cDNA coding for diacylglycerol: CDP-ethanolamine ethanolaminephosphotransferase (EPT) was cloned from C. reinhardtii. The C. reinhardtii EPT appears phylogenetically more similar to mammalian aminoalcoholphosphotransferases than to those of yeast and the least close to those of plants. Similar membrane topography was found between the C. reinhardtii EPT and the aminoalcoholphosphotransferases from mammals, yeast, and plants. A yeast mutant deficient in both cholinephosphotransferase and ethanolaminephosphotransferase was complemented by the C. reinhardtii EPT gene. Enzymatic assays of C. reinhardtii EPT from the complemented yeast microsomes demonstrated that the C. reinhardtii EPT synthesized both …

Substrate Specificity Of Helicobacter Pylori Histone-Like Hu Protein Is Determined By Insufficient Stabilization Of Dna Flexure Points, Christina Chen, Sharmistha Ghosh, Anne Grove Oct 2004

Substrate Specificity Of Helicobacter Pylori Histone-Like Hu Protein Is Determined By Insufficient Stabilization Of Dna Flexure Points, Christina Chen, Sharmistha Ghosh, Anne Grove

Faculty Publications

The histone-like HU protein is ubiquitous in the eubacteria. A role for Escherichia coli HU in compaction of the bacterial genome has been reported, along with regulatory roles in DNA replication, transposition, repair and transcription. We show here that HU from the human pathogen Helicobacter pylori, which has been implicated in the development of ulcers and gastric cancer, exhibits enhanced thermal stability and distinct DNA substrate specificity. Thermal denaturation of HpyHU (H. pylori HU) measured by CD spectroscopy yields a melting temperature (Tm) of 56.4 ± 0.1 °C. HpyHU binds linear duplex DNA with a site size of ∼19 bp …

Marine Environmental Radioactivity Near Nuclear Power Plants In Northern Taiwan, Chih-An Huh, Chih-Chieh Su, Yueh-Yuan Tu, Kwang-Tsao Shao, Ching-Yi Chen, I-Jiunn Cheng

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The levels and composition of environmental radioactivity at the outlets of nuclear power plants and nearby coastal environs in northern Taiwan have been investigated by gamma spectrometric analysis of seawater, algae, fish and sediment samples collected systematically in the past four years. The results show that anthropogenic radionuclides contribute very little to the total radioactivities in all types of samples. Samples from the outlet of the Second Nuclear Power Plant are more enriched in artificial nuclides, with average algae samples containing ~4 Bq/kg of 137Cs + 54Mn + 60Co (or 3.6% of the total activity) and average sediment samples containing …

Privacy, Free Speech & The Garden Grove Cyber Café Experiment, Brett Stohs Oct 2004

Privacy, Free Speech & The Garden Grove Cyber Café Experiment, Brett Stohs

Duke Law & Technology Review

In response to gang violence at local "cyber cafés," the City Council of Garden Grove, California, passed an ordinance requiring cyber cafés to install video surveillance systems. The constitutionality of the provision was subsequently challenged, and a California Court of Appeal determined that the video surveillance requirement did not violate free speech or privacy protections under either the federal or California Constitutions. This decision was immediately challenged, by commentators and a dissenting judge, as opening the door to Orwellian-type, government intrusions into individuals' personal lives. This iBrief analyzes the appellate court's decision and concludes that not only did the majority …

Observation And Properties Of The X(3872) Decaying To J/Ψπ+Π- In Pp̅ Collisions At √S = 1.96 Tev, V. M. Abazov, Gregory R. Snow, D0 Collaboration

Gregory Snow Publications

We report the observation of the X(3872) in the J/ψπ+π- channel, with J/ψ decaying to μ+μ-, in pp̅ collisions at √s = 1.96 TeV. Using approximately 230 pb-1 of data collected with the Run II D0 detector, we observe 522 ± 100 X(3872) candidates. The mass difference between the X(3872) state and the J=J/ψ is measured to be 774.9 ± 3.1(stat) ± 3.0(syst) MeV/c2. We have investigated the production and decay characteristics of the X(3872) and find them to be …
