Obesity And Advertising Policy, Todd J. Zywicki, Debra Holt, Maureen Ohlhausen Oct 2004

Obesity And Advertising Policy, Todd J. Zywicki, Debra Holt, Maureen Ohlhausen

George Mason University School of Law Working Papers Series

It is clear that Americans are getting fatter, both adults and children. This development has led some to call for a ban on food advertising directed at children. There are numerous practical and constitutional difficulties with such a policy. This article poses a more fundamental question - even if feasible, would restricting food advertising do anything to reduce obesity or even slow its trends? The article also considers whether the social costs of banning advertising could outweigh the social benefits of such an action.

This article provides a review of the literature on the fundamental causes of the American obesity …

Wine Wars: The 21st Amendment And Discriminatory Bans To Direct Shipment Of Wine , Todd J. Zywicki

George Mason University School of Law Working Papers Series

This essay is actually a series of posts from the Volokh Conspiracy weblog (www.volokh.com) that discusses the policy and constitutional issues surrounding a question that the Supreme Court will hear this term, whether discriminatory barriers to the interstate direct shipment of wine are constitutional. Because of the timeliness of the issue, the essay is presented in this unusual and informal format so as to be available to the public more rapidly than through the traditional law review format. This essay” reviews the historical evidence and ratification history of the 21st Amendment, and concludes that the answer is unambiguously no.

Integrated Optical Waveguides With Liquid Cores, Aaron R. Hawkins, John P. Barber, Dongliang Yin, D. W. Deamer, Holger Schmidt Oct 2004

Integrated Optical Waveguides With Liquid Cores, Aaron R. Hawkins, John P. Barber, Dongliang Yin, D. W. Deamer, Holger Schmidt

Faculty Publications

We report the design, fabrication, and demonstration of single-mode integrated optical waveguides with liquid cores. The principle of the device is based on antiresonant reflecting optical (ARROW) waveguides with hollow cores. We describe design principles for waveguide loss optimization down to 0.1/cm. Using a fabrication process based on conventional silicon microfabrication and sacrificial core layers, waveguides of varying widths and lengths with volumes covering the pico- to nanoliter range were fabricated. We observe confined mode propagation, measure waveguide losses of 2.4/cm, and demonstrate that the waveguides possess tailorable wavelength selectivity. The potential for highly integrated, sensitive devices based on these …

Performance Of Agronomic Crop Varieties In Alaska 1978 –2002, Robert M. Van Veldhuizen, Charles W. Knight Oct 2004

Performance Of Agronomic Crop Varieties In Alaska 1978 –2002, Robert M. Van Veldhuizen, Charles W. Knight

Bulletin

There is no such thing as the perfect variety for Alaska. Some varieties are adapted to a wide range of climatic and geographic locations, while others are more specific in their adaptation. The change in elevation of a few hundred feet or a move of a few miles can have a considerable effect on the performance of any variety. Also, cultural practices such as tillage, fertilizer rates, planting date, seeding rate, pest control, and a multitude of other factors can also influence crop yields. This is especially noticeable in northern environments such as Alaska. For example, date-of-planting studies done by …

Ice Nucleation In Internally Mixed Ammonium Sulfate/Dicarboxylic Acid Particles, Matthew E. Wise, Rebecca M. Garland, Margaret A. Tolbert Oct 2004

Ice Nucleation In Internally Mixed Ammonium Sulfate/Dicarboxylic Acid Particles, Matthew E. Wise, Rebecca M. Garland, Margaret A. Tolbert

CUP Faculty Research

Recent studies have shown that tropospheric sulfate aerosols commonly contain 50% or more by mass organic species. The influence of these organics on the chemical and physical properties of sulfate aerosols is not fully established. Using an aerosol flow tube technique, we have determined ice nucleation temperatures for particles composed of ammonium sulfate and mixtures of ammonium sulfate with a series of dicarboxylic acids. A calibration curve was developed to allow us to convert the freezing temperatures to a saturation ratio required for ice nucleation. At levels detectable by our experimental technique we find that the freezing temperatures and critical …

Using Genetic Analyses To Identify Predators, C. L. Williams, J. J. Johnston Oct 2004

Using Genetic Analyses To Identify Predators, C. L. Williams, J. J. Johnston

Sheep and Goat Research Journal

Coyote and dog depredation account for much of the economic losses to livestock in the United States (National Agricultural Statistical Service, 2000, 2001). However, depredation by other species (such as members of reintroduced wolf populations) can be more socially and politically contentious. Predators are often elusive and attacks on livestock are not often witnessed but the species of predator causing stock losses can sometimes be ascertained from evidence near the carcass (such as scat or hair), the attack pattern, or size and spacing of bite wounds. However, these species assignments can be subjective and may be influenced by the experience …

Selective Targeting Of Alpha Coyotes To Stop Sheep Depredation, M. M. Jaeger Oct 2004

Selective Targeting Of Alpha Coyotes To Stop Sheep Depredation, M. M. Jaeger

Sheep and Goat Research Journal

Research to find more effective and socially acceptable solutions of managing coyote (Canis latrans) depredation has been ongoing for many years. The primary objective is to develop strategies that effectively reduce losses, not simply reduce coyote numbers. An important step in solving such conflicts is to clearly define the problem. In this case, it is important to know which coyotes are most likely to kill sheep and when and where their depredation is greatest. For a control strategy to be effective, it must be appropriate to these three defining characteristics. The hardest of these questions to resolve has been determining …

The Voice: 2001-2011

The walls of all three floors of Bornhuetter Hall were found defaced with words of hate on the morning of October 8, hours before the building was to be toured and dedicated by the trustees. There have been concerns reported by students about RA's and security officers breaching their privacy. On October 13, University of Hawaii Professor of Dance Judy Van Zile lectured on dance movements in relation to spirituality in Korean culture. Elizabeth Weiss has written an article on page 8 about fun things to do in Wooster if you are staying over fall break.

Relationship Among Genes Conferring Partial Resistance To Leaf Rust (Puccinia Triticina) In Wheat Lines Ci 13227 And L-574-1, Jeffrey Lehman Oct 2004

Relationship Among Genes Conferring Partial Resistance To Leaf Rust (Puccinia Triticina) In Wheat Lines Ci 13227 And L-574-1, Jeffrey Lehman

Biology and Earth Science Faculty Scholarship

This study describes the segregation of genes for resistance to the fungus Puccinia triticina in a cross between partially resistant wheat lines L-574-1 and CI 13227 with two and four genes for resistance, respectively. The objectives of this study were to use parental, F1, F2, and backcross populations to quantify maternal effects, degree of dominance, and transgressive segregation, and to determine whether CI 13227 and L-574- 1 share any resistance genes for long latent period or small uredinia. In two experiments conducted in the greenhouse, the uppermost leaf of adult wheat plants was inoculated prior to heading with P. triticina. …
