Cowbirds, Locals, And The Dynamic Endurance Of Regionalism, Wendy Griswold, Nathan Wright Jan 2004

Cowbirds, Locals, And The Dynamic Endurance Of Regionalism, Wendy Griswold, Nathan Wright

Sociology Faculty Research and Scholarship

Regional cultures, far from atrophying in the face of national and global cultural circuits, are both enduring and reproducing themselves. This is not just due to locals holding fast to their traditions but to cosmopolitans becoming knowledgeable about the culture of place as part of their ongoing identity construction. Results from Survey2000, an online survey conducted by the National Geographic Society, show the processes that are maintaining and even increasing the cultural distinctiveness of American regions as indicated by residents’ knowledge of local literature. One such process involves what we call cultural “cowbirds,” people new to a region who catch …

The Trial Court's Gatekeeper Role Under Frye, Daubert, And Kumho: A Special Look At Children's Cases, John Eric Smithburn

Journal Articles

The typical requisites for receiving testimony from an expert witness are that the expert be qualified in a particular subject or area of expertise, that the expert testify in opinion form or otherwise, which will help the fact finder, and that there be a proper basis for the expert's testimony. This article examines the changing meaning in the law of evidence of the expert's subject area in cases involving children. During most of the last century, where the expert witness proposed to testify concerning a new or novel scientific system, process or technique, the court applied the rule of Frye …

Within-Field Distribution Of The Sunflower Midge (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae), E. W. Hodgson, I. V. Macrae, Gary J. Brewer Jan 2004

Within-Field Distribution Of The Sunflower Midge (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae), E. W. Hodgson, I. V. Macrae, Gary J. Brewer

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

The sunßower midge, Contarinia schulzi Gagne (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae), is a pest of cultivated sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.). Larval feeding can cause damage and yield loss to the sunflower head. Adult emergence is extended and larvae are well protected in the sunflower receptacle, making chemical control methods difficult and expensive. Sunflower midge enter sunflower fields at the edges but fieldwide distributions occur, although the dynamics are not fully understood. Two commercial fields in 1999 and one field in 2000 were systematically sampled by dividing each field into fixed sample points. Mean egg and larval densities from each sample point were …

A Study In Modeling Low-Conservation Protein Superfamilies, Chang Wang, Stephen Scott, Jun Zhang, Qingping Tao, Dmitri E. Fomenko, Vadim N. Gladyshev Jan 2004

A Study In Modeling Low-Conservation Protein Superfamilies, Chang Wang, Stephen Scott, Jun Zhang, Qingping Tao, Dmitri E. Fomenko, Vadim N. Gladyshev

School of Computing: Technical Reports

We present several algorithms for identification of new proteins in superfamilies with low primary sequence conservation. The low conservation of primary sequence in protein superfamilies such as Thioredoxin-fold (Trx-fold) makes conventional methods such as hidden Markov models (HMMs) difficult to use. Therefore, we use structural properties to build our classifiers. These structural properties include secondary structure patterns as well as various properties of the residues in the protein sequences. We use this information to model proteins via hidden Markov models, support vector machines and algorithms in the multiple-instance learning model. In 20-fold jack-knife tests, some of our models performed well, …

Variable Rate Execution, Steve Goddard, Xin Liu Jan 2004

Variable Rate Execution, Steve Goddard, Xin Liu

School of Computing: Technical Reports

We present a task model for adaptive real-time tasks in which a task’s execution rate requirements are allowed to change at any time. The model, variable rate execution (VRE), is an extension of the rate-based execution (RBE) model. We relax the constant execution rate assumption of canonical realtime task models by allowing both the worst case execution time (WCET) and the period to be variable. The VRE model also supports tasks joining and leaving the system at any time. Another advantage of the new task model is that the exact execution rate need not be known for soft real-time or …

The Relationship Of Field Burn Severity Measures To Satellite-Derived Burned Area Reflectance Classification (Barc) Maps, Andrew T. Hudak, Pete Robichaud, Terrie Jain, Penelope Morgan, Carter Stone, Jess Clark Jan 2004

The Relationship Of Field Burn Severity Measures To Satellite-Derived Burned Area Reflectance Classification (Barc) Maps, Andrew T. Hudak, Pete Robichaud, Terrie Jain, Penelope Morgan, Carter Stone, Jess Clark

United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Preliminary results are presented from ongoing research on spatial variability of fire effects on soils and vegetation from the Black Mountain Two and Cooney Ridge wildfires, which burned in western Montana during the 2003 fire season. Extensive field fractional cover data were sampled to assess the efficacy of quantitative satellite image-derived indicators of burn severity. The objective of this study was to compare the field burn severity measures to the digital numbers used to produce Burned Area Reflectance Classification (BARC) maps. Canopy density was the field variable most highly correlated to BARC data derived from either SPOT Multispectral (XS) or …

Functional Feeding Responses Of Coyotes, Canis Latrans, To Fl Uctuating Prey Abundance Inthe Curlew Valley, Utah, 1977–1993 , Rebecca A. Bartel, Frederick F. Knowlton

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

We investigated interactions between coyotes (Canis latrans Say, 1823) and prey in the Curlew Valley, Utah, by comparing prey abundances with prey consumption rates. Previous studies reported a cyclic trend in black-tailed jackrabbit (Lepus californicus Gray, 1837) density with a period of 10 years and >150-fold amplitude, as well as short-term fl uctuations among some rodent species that exceeded an 8-fold difference in amplitude over 2 years. Our results suggest changes in coyote diets mainly refl ect the fl uctuations in jackrabbit abundance. Prey switching to rodents during periods of low jackrabbit abundance also was evident. We used the initial …

Temporal Dynamics Of Leafy Sspurge (Euphorbia Esula) And Two Species Of Flea Beetles (Aphthona Spp.) Used As Biological Control Agents, Diane L. Larson, James B. Grace

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

The goal of this study was to evaluate the biological control program of leafy spurge (Euphorbia esula) in a large natural area, Theodore Roosevelt National Park, western North Dakota, USA. Aphthona lacertosa and Aphthona nigriscutis have been released at more than 1800 points in the 18,600-ha South Unit of the park beginning in 1989; most releases have occurred since 1994. We established permanent vegetation plots throughout the infested area of the park and determined stem counts and biomass of leafy spurge and abundance of the two flea beetle species at these plots each year from 1999 to 2001. …

Pest Control: Rodents, Mark E. Tobin, Michael W. Fall Jan 2004

Pest Control: Rodents, Mark E. Tobin, Michael W. Fall

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Rodents are an important and ubiquitous group of mammals that occur as indigenous or introduced species throughout the world. The populations of a relatively few species that live in close association with humans sometimes cause economic damage or become threats to the health of humans or domestic animals. When rodent control efforts are contemplated, the type of problem and the objectives of these efforts should be carefully defined. Successful management of rodent problems depends upon correct identification of the rodent species involved and on obtaining information on the biology, ecology, and behavior of the species in the ecological setting where …

Genotypic And Environmental Modification Of Asian Noodle Quality Of Hard Winter Wheats, Robert A. Graybosch, N. Ames, P. Stephen Baenziger, C. J. Peterson

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

The relative effects of environment, genotype, and their interactions on the modification of Asian noodle quality attributes were assessed using 38 winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars and breeding lines grown in replicated trials at three Nebraska locations in harvest year 2000. Noodle color was determined in both white salted and yellow alkaline procedures, and noodle textural features were investigated by producing white salted noodles. Significant environmental, genotypic, and genotype-by-environment variation was observed for nearly all initial and 24-hr noodle color traits in both types of noodles. Significant genotypic effects were observed for several textural traits, while significant environmental …

Endocytic Function, Glycosaminoglycan Specificity, And Antibody Sensitivity Of The Recombinant Human 190-Kda Hyaluronan Receptor For Endocytosis (Hare), Ed Harris, Janet A. Weigel, Paul H. Weigel Jan 2004

Endocytic Function, Glycosaminoglycan Specificity, And Antibody Sensitivity Of The Recombinant Human 190-Kda Hyaluronan Receptor For Endocytosis (Hare), Ed Harris, Janet A. Weigel, Paul H. Weigel

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

The human hyaluronan receptor for endocytosis (hHARE) mediates the endocytic clearance of hyaluronan (HA) and chondroitin sulfate from lymph fluid and blood. Two hHARE isoforms (190 and 315 kDa) are present in sinusoidal endothelial cells of liver, spleen, and lymph nodes (Zhou, B., McGary, C. T., Weigel, J. A., Saxena, A., and Weigel, P. H. (2003) Glycobiology 13, 339–349). Here we report the specificity and function of the 190-kDa HARE, expressed without the larger isoform, in Flp-In 293 cell lines (190hHARE cells). Like the native protein, recombinant hHARE contains ~25 kDa of N-linked oligosaccharides, binds HA in a ligand blot …

How Predation Risk Affects The Temporal Dynamics Of Avian Leks: Greater Sage Grouse Versus Golden Eagles, Adam R. Boyko, Robert M. Gibson, Jeffrey R. Lucas Jan 2004

How Predation Risk Affects The Temporal Dynamics Of Avian Leks: Greater Sage Grouse Versus Golden Eagles, Adam R. Boyko, Robert M. Gibson, Jeffrey R. Lucas

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Leks often attract predators as well as mates, yet most evolutionary models have assumed that sexual selection, not predation, drives lekking behavior. We explored the influence of predation on lek dynamics using a stochastic dynamic game model based on the lek-breeding greater sage grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) and its principal avian predator, the golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos). The model predicts time-dependent male lek attendance as a function of factors affecting both mating success (female arrival rate, male numbers, and social status) and predation risk (eagle arrival rate and group size). Dominant males are predicted to arrive sooner …

Phenological Synchrony Affects Interaction Strength Of An Exotic Weevil With Platte Thistle, A Native Host Plant, F. Leland Russell, Svata M. Louda Jan 2004

Phenological Synchrony Affects Interaction Strength Of An Exotic Weevil With Platte Thistle, A Native Host Plant, F. Leland Russell, Svata M. Louda

Svata M. Louda Publications

Phenological synchrony of a consumer population with its resource populations is expected to affect interaction intensity. We quantified phenological variation and synchrony of populations of an invasive Eurasian flower head weevil, Rhinocyllus conicus, that consumes florets, ovules, and seeds of developing flower heads of a native North American thistle, Cirsium canescens, in Sand Hills prairie in Nebraska, USA. Variation in timing of adult activity among weevil populations was larger than variation in timing of flower head development among C. canescens populations, and it drove the observed variation in the phenological synchrony between weevil and host plant populations. Furthermore, …

Catabolite Repression And Virulence Gene Expression In Listeria Monocytogenes, Stefanie Evans Gilbreth, Andrew K. Benson, Robert W. Hutkins Jan 2004

Catabolite Repression And Virulence Gene Expression In Listeria Monocytogenes, Stefanie Evans Gilbreth, Andrew K. Benson, Robert W. Hutkins

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

Previous studies have suggested that carbohydrates may affect expression of virulence genes in Listeria monocytogenes. Which carbohydrates influence virulence gene expression and how carbohydrates mediate expression, however, is not clear. The goal of this work was to examine how carbohydrates affect virulence gene expression in L. monocytogenes 10403S. Growth studies were conducted in medium containing glucose and various sugars. Metabolism of arbutin, arabitol, cellobiose, mannose, maltose, trehalose, and salicin were repressed in the presence of glucose. Only when glucose was consumed were these sugars fermented, indicating that catabolite repression by glucose had occurred. To determine whether virulence gene expression …

Cancer-Related Anemia, Hikmat N. Abdel-Razeq Jan 2004

Cancer-Related Anemia, Hikmat N. Abdel-Razeq

Saudi Medical Journal

Anemia is the most common hematological abnormality in cancer patients, unfortunately, it is often under-recognized and under-treated. The pathogenesis of cancer anemia is complex and most of the time multifactorial; involving factors related to the tumor itself or its therapy. While anemia can present in a wide range of symptoms, involving almost every organ, it is believed that it contributes much to cancer-related fatigue, one of the most common symptoms in cancer patients. In addition, there is increasing evidence to suggest that anemia is an independent factor adversely affecting tumor response and patient survival. While blood transfusion was the only …

Hemorrhagic Episodes In Hemophiliacs Simulating Abdominal Surgical Emergencies, Mohammad E. Rabie, Abdul-Rahman E. Al-Tayeb, Mubarak H. Zafer, Anwar K. Sheikha

Saudi Medical Journal

Hemophiliacs are subjected to develop episodes of spontaneous bleeding at different sites of the body, primarily the knees. On occasions, such episodes affect the abdomen. The picture engendered in such cases may mimic that of an abdominal emergency requiring surgical intervention. Such ill advised and unwarranted intervention may end with the patient9s death. With the proper employment of radiology, the correct diagnosis may be reached and consequently, conservative treatment, in which factor VIII plays the major role, instituted. Here, we describe the clinical course of 2 patients with hemophilia A who suffered bleeding in the abdomen and were treated conservatively …

Thrombocytopenia Responding To Red Blood Cell Transfusion, Ahmed A. Mubarak, Abdalla Awidi, Kakil I. Rasul, Ussama Al-Homsi

Saudi Medical Journal

Three patients with severe symptomatic iron deficiency anemia and thrombocytopenia had a significant rise in platelet count a few days following packed red blood cell transfusion. Pre-transfusion platelet count of patient one was 17 x 109/L, 22 x 109/L in patient 2 and 29 x 109/L in patient 3. On the 6th day post transfusion, the platelet count rose to 166 x 109/L in patient one, 830 x 109/L in patient 2 and 136 x 109/L in patient 3. The possible mechanisms behind such an unreported observation are discussed.
