Fast Algorithms For Fragment Based Completion In Images Of Natural Scenes, Siddharth Rajkumar Borikar Jan 2004

Fast Algorithms For Fragment Based Completion In Images Of Natural Scenes, Siddharth Rajkumar Borikar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Textures are used widely in computer graphics to represent fine visual details and produce realistic looking images. Often it is necessary to remove some foreground object from the scene. Removal of the portion creates one or more holes in the texture image. These holes need to be filled to complete the image. Various methods like clone brush strokes and compositing processes are used to carry out this completion. User skill is required in such methods. Texture synthesis can also be used to complete regions where the texture is stationary or structured. Reconstructing methods can be used to fill in large-scale …

Land Use Effects On Lake Water Quality In Central Florida, Jonathan Seiler Jan 2004

Land Use Effects On Lake Water Quality In Central Florida, Jonathan Seiler

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Land use affects the water quality of lakes. Different land use types yield different effects due to varying amounts and constituents of runoff. In this study, the effects of surrounding land use on the water quality of 50 lakes in Seminole County, Florida was assessed. Using GIS, I placed buffers of 100 and 500 m around each lake. The percentages of land use type were calculated within these buffers for 1990 and 1995. An ordination of lakes was done using Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) to determine if the surrounding land use patterns were adequate to describe the trophic status of …

Using The Six Sigma Policy Deployment Cycle To Mitigate Project Failur, Archana Magadi Jan 2004

Using The Six Sigma Policy Deployment Cycle To Mitigate Project Failur, Archana Magadi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Many organizations are struggling to improve customer-focused quality in today's highly competitive domestic and global markets. At the same time, these organizations have failed to implement the Six Sigma methodology into their daily control and strategic planning processes. Six Sigma deployment failures have been categorized as coming from many sources, both management related and person related. Some of the key management related Six Sigma project failures have been identified and discussed in this research work. For continuous improvement to truly take root, organizations must realize that just successfully applying quality tools on any process will not necessarily provide dramatic results, …

An Investigation Into Providing Feedback To Users Of Decision Support, James Pharmer Jan 2004

An Investigation Into Providing Feedback To Users Of Decision Support, James Pharmer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Research in several domains has shown that the implementation of computerized decision support aids is often associated with issues of human-automation interaction, which can have disastrous consequences. One often-cited reason for these issues is the poor quality of the feedback that is provided to the operators through these tools. The objective of the proposed investigation is to examine how providing feedback through a decision support tool affects operator knowledge and performance in the context of a fault management task for naval gunfire support. A one-way between-groups comparison was made to investigate differences between providing decision support feedback (logic trace, mission …

Monolithic Integration Of Dual Optical Elements On High Power Semicond, Laurent Vaissie Jan 2004

Monolithic Integration Of Dual Optical Elements On High Power Semicond, Laurent Vaissie

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation investigates the monolithic integration of dual optical elements on high power semiconductor lasers for emission around 980nm wavelength. In the proposed configuration, light is coupled out of the AlGaAs/GaAs waveguide by a low reflectivity grating coupler towards the substrate where a second monolithic optical element is integrated to improve the device performance or functionality. A fabrication process based on electron beam lithography and plasma etching was developed to control the grating coupler duty cycle and shape. The near-field intensity profile outcoupled by the grating is modeled using a combination of finite-difference time domain (FDTD) analysis of the nonuniform …

Trends In North American Vulture Populations, Michael L. Avery Jan 2004

Trends In North American Vulture Populations, Michael L. Avery

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

In recent years, interactions between vultures and human activities have noticeably increased. These interactions include nuisance roosts, damage to homes and businesses, livestock depredation, and collisions with aircraft. One major factor contributing to the upsurge in vulture problems is higher numbers of these birds. Both turkey vultures and black vultures appear to be experiencing major population increases throughout much of their ranges in the United States. During 1990-2002, Christmas Bird Count (CBC) data revealed annual nationwide increases of 1.79% and 5.97% for turkey wltures and black vultures, respectively. Estimates *om Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) data were 1.99% and 4.97% for …

Comparison Of Aerodynamic And Radiometric Surface Temperature Using Precision Weighing Lysimeters, Paul D. Colaizzi, Steven R. Evett, Terry A. Howell, Judy A. Tolk Jan 2004

Comparison Of Aerodynamic And Radiometric Surface Temperature Using Precision Weighing Lysimeters, Paul D. Colaizzi, Steven R. Evett, Terry A. Howell, Judy A. Tolk

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Radiometric surface temperature (Ts) is commonly used as a surrogate for aerodynamic temperature (To) in computing the sensible heat flux term (H) in the energy balance. However, these temperatures may differ by several degrees, leading to possible errors (especially for large H) and their relationship is not well known. Previous researchers have established empirical and semi-empirical parameterizations of the radiometric roughness length (zor) or some related form (e.g., kBr -1 = ln[zom/zor], where zom is the momentum roughness length). In this paper, we estimated To – T …

Un-Making Law: The Classical Revival In The Common Law, Jay Feinman Jan 2004

Un-Making Law: The Classical Revival In The Common Law, Jay Feinman

Seattle University Law Review

This article describes the possibility of a classical revival in the common law and situates the revival in its historical context. Part I sets the stage by briefly summarizing a century and a half of common-law development. At the end of the Nineteenth Century, classical legal thought envisioned a highly systematic body of law through which courts could mechanically apply abstract legal concepts to reach determinate results, producing limited liability in contract and tort law and expansive property rights. Critics beginning with Holmes and notably including Progressives and legal realists attacked classical law as incomplete and incoherent. Their critique was …

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

This Note will first explore the history of arbitration, particularly within the United States. It will predominantly examine the traditional definitions of arbitrators and any consistencies throughout the various differences of arbitrator definitions. Second, this Note will investigate the traditional definitions of and roles played by advocates in traditional litigation and alternative dispute resolution. It will contrast advocates with party-appointed arbitrators, particularly focusing on their history, reasons for their creation, and their intended purpose.

Third, this Note will investigate the characteristics of modern party-appointed arbitrators, focusing on what scholars and parties regard as their expected behavior in a tripartite arbitration. …

Swimming In The Deep End: Dealing With Justice In Mediation, Jonathan M. Hyman Jan 2004

Swimming In The Deep End: Dealing With Justice In Mediation, Jonathan M. Hyman

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

Justice is a troublesome issue for mediators. It is not their role to decide who was right and who was wrong. Mediators have no authority to determine if a resolution is fair or just. That role and that authority are reserved for judges, juries, and arbitrators. But if mediators should not decide what is fair and just, why should they even think about those matters? Even learning only what the parties deem fair or unfair about past actions, or what is just or unjust about pending settlement proposals, without trying to impose any "correct" outcome, would leave the mediator with …

The Merger Of Law And Mediation: Lessons From Equity Jurisprudence And Roscoe Pound, Jacqueline M. Nolan-Haley Jan 2004

The Merger Of Law And Mediation: Lessons From Equity Jurisprudence And Roscoe Pound, Jacqueline M. Nolan-Haley

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

Almost one hundred years ago, Roscoe Pound' warned about the decline of equity jurisprudence in the American legal system. He called this phenomenon the "decadence of equity."' Though Pound offered several causes for this decline, what we know today as "institutionalization" in the court system was the primary suspect. "The very thing that made equity a system must, in the end, prove fatal to it. In the very act of becoming a system, it becomes legalized, and in becoming merely a competing system of law insures its ultimate downfall." While Pound acknowledged that he saw some good from the "refinements" …

Concentrating, Purifying And Detecting Waterborne Parasites, Dante S. Zarlenga, James M. Trout Jan 2004

Concentrating, Purifying And Detecting Waterborne Parasites, Dante S. Zarlenga, James M. Trout

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

There has been recent emphasis on developing better methods for detecting diseases of zoonotic and veterinary importance. This has been prompted by an increase in human disease agents detectable in environmental samples, the potential for bioterrorism, and the lowering of international trade barriers and expansion of personal travel, which are bringing previously considered exotic diseases to new geographical localities. To appreciate the complexities of developing detection methods and working with environmental samples, it is appropriate to review technologies currently in use, as well as those in development and presently limited to research laboratories. Discussion of parasite detection would not be …

Plasma Clearance And Tissue Distribution Of Radiolabeled Leptin In The Chicken, John P. Mcmurtry, Christopher M. Ashwell, Donna M. Brocht, Thomas J. Caperna Jan 2004

Plasma Clearance And Tissue Distribution Of Radiolabeled Leptin In The Chicken, John P. Mcmurtry, Christopher M. Ashwell, Donna M. Brocht, Thomas J. Caperna

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Leptin is an adipose and liver tissue-derived secreted protein in chickens that has been implicated in the regulation of food intake and whole-body energy balance. In this study, the metabolic clearance and tissue uptake of leptin were examined in the chicken (Gallus gallus). Four-week-old broiler males were infused with 125I-labeled mouse leptin. Chromatography of radiolabeled leptin in plasma produced two peaks, one at 16 kDa (free leptin) and a free iodine peak. No leptin binding protein in blood was detected. Leptin was cleared with a half-life estimate of 23 min. In order to investigate the tissue distribution …

Boll Weevil (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) Survival Through The Seed Cotton Cleaning Process In The Cotton Gin, Thomas W. Sappington, Alan D. Brashears, Megha N. Parajulee, Stanley C. Carroll, Mark D. Arnold, Roy V. Baker Jan 2004

Boll Weevil (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) Survival Through The Seed Cotton Cleaning Process In The Cotton Gin, Thomas W. Sappington, Alan D. Brashears, Megha N. Parajulee, Stanley C. Carroll, Mark D. Arnold, Roy V. Baker

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

There is concern that gins located in boll weevil, Anthonomus grandis grandis Boheman, eradication zones may become points of reintroduction when they process cotton grown in a neighboring infested area. We estimated boll weevil survival through two typical machine sequences used in commercial cotton gins to clean and dry the seed cotton in advance of the gin stand, as well as separately through two incline cylinder cleaners or one or two tower dryers operating at different temperatures. Large numbers of laboratory-reared adult boll weevils were marked with fluorescent powder, fed into the test system, and recovered with the assistance of …

Boll Weevil (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) Survival Through Cotton Gin Trash Fans, Thomas W. Sappington, Alan D. Brashears, Megha N. Parajulee, Stanley C. Carroll, Mark D. Arnold, Roy V. Baker

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

There is concern that cotton gins may serve as loci for reintroduction of boll weevils, Anthonomus grandis grandis Boheman, to eradicated or suppressed zones when processing weevil infested cotton from neighboring zones. Previous work has shown that virtually all weevils entering the gin in the seed cotton will be removed before they reach the gin stand. Those not killed by the seed cotton cleaning machinery will be shunted alive into the trash fraction, which passes through a centrifugal trash fan before exiting the gin. The objective of this study was to determine survival potential of boll weevils passed through a …

Linking Microbial-Scale Findings To Farm-Scale Outcomes In A Dryland Cropping System, Cinthia K. Johnson, Brian J. Wienhold, John W. Doran, Rhae A. Drijber, Sara F. Wright

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Soil biological response to management is best evaluated in field-scale experiments within the context of the soil environment and crop; however, cost-effective methods are lacking to relate these data which span multiple spatial scales. We hypothesized that zones of apparent electrical conductivity (ECa) could be used to integrate soil properties (sampling-site scale), microbial-scale measures of vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal (VAM) fungi, and field-scale wheat yields from yield maps. An on-farm dryland experiment (~250 ha) was established wherein two (~32-ha) fields were assigned to each phase of a winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) – corn (Zea mays L.) – …

Twenty-six point mutations were identified from a 2,156 bp DNA sequence alignment. The frequency of polymorphic cox1 DdeI and HaeIII, and cox2 Sau3AI and MspI restriction sites were determined from 1,414 individuals by polymerase chain reaction restriction fragment length polymorphism. Ten haplotypes were observed. A single haplotype was present among 90% of individuals examined, and a HaeIII haplotype was not present in …

Ordering (And Order In) The City, Nicole Stelle Garnett Jan 2004

Ordering (And Order In) The City, Nicole Stelle Garnett

Journal Articles

Over the past two decades, the broken windows hypothesis by George Kelling and James Q. Wilson has revolutionized thinking about urban policy. This now-familiar theory is that uncorrected manifestations of disorder, even minor ones like broken windows, signal a breakdown in the social order that accelerates neighborhood decline. The response to this theory has been a proliferation of policies focusing on public order. Largely missing from the academic debate about these developments is a discussion of the complex and important role of property regulation in order-maintenance efforts. This Article attempts to fill that property law gap in the public-order puzzle …
