Transnational Social Movements And The War On Drugs, Ben Mostyn Nov 2004

Transnational Social Movements And The War On Drugs, Ben Mostyn

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis discusses the growing body of work on transnational social movement theory. Transnational social movement theory is an attempt to adapt social movement theory to the changing nature of international relations. To further this theory, I test the hypothesis that "a transnational social movement has caused drug law reforms at the local and state level".

To test this hypothesis I undertake a case study of one local and one national drug law reform. The drug laws in the state of New South Wales, Australia were reformed in 1999 to allow heroin addicts to use a medical center to inject …

On The Color Of The Orinoco River Plume, Ana L. Odriozola Nov 2004

On The Color Of The Orinoco River Plume, Ana L. Odriozola

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In situ measurements were used to study the bio-optical properties of marine waters within the Gulf of Paria (GOP, Venezuela) and in the Southeastern Caribbean Sea (SEC) as they are affected by the seasonal discharge of the Orinoco River plume. The main purpose of this study was to determine the impact of colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) (also known as Gelbstoff), phytoplankton, and total suspended matter (TSM) in the color of the Orinoco River plume. This information is essential for regional ocean color algorithms development.

Salinity and silica values indicate that the GOP and SEC waters were under the …

Variation In The Experience Of Teaching Design: The Community Of Practice Dimension., Linda Drew Nov 2004

Variation In The Experience Of Teaching Design: The Community Of Practice Dimension., Linda Drew

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper explores conceptions of teaching held by academics in departments of design and explores links between those conceptions and the communities of practice associated with the subject context. This paper explores the qualitatively different ways that teachers of design experience their teaching. The study focuses on teachers of practice based subjects in design. Much of the work which has examined teachers’ conceptions built on research frameworks that also explored students conceptions and approaches to learning. Studies of conceptions of teaching have ranged from the phenomenographic (e.g. Martin and Balla, 1991; Prosser et al 1994) to those studies of belief …

The Study Of Taiwan Aboriginal Culture On Product Design., Tyan-Yu Wu, Chi-Hsien Hsu, Rungtai Lin Nov 2004

The Study Of Taiwan Aboriginal Culture On Product Design., Tyan-Yu Wu, Chi-Hsien Hsu, Rungtai Lin

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Taiwan aboriginal art and craft is one of the most beautiful and primitive cultures, which displays a strong characteristic within Taiwan art, especially in its primitive form and symbolic meaning. These characteristics have a potential to generate a unique product to enhance the significant localized culture, among Global market. However, the decline of Taiwan aboriginal cultures makes us rethink its perspective in design for the extension of aboriginal culture. The motive of this study attempts to extend the Taiwan aboriginal culture by adding cultural value into consumer products and, furthermore to promote its cultural identity in the global market.

Combination Of Cdf And D0 Results On The W Boson Mass And Width, Darin Acosta, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

The results based on 1992–95 data (Run 1) from the CDF and D0 experiments on the measurements of the W boson mass and width are presented, along with the combined results. We report a Tevatron collider average MW =80.456±0.059 GeV. We also report the Tevatron collider average of the directly measured W boson width ΓW=2.115±0.105 GeV. We describe a new joint analysis of the direct W mass and width measurements. Assuming the validity of the standard model, we combine the directly measured W boson width with the width extracted from the ratio of W and Z boson …

Entrepreneurial Orientation As A Basis For Classification Within A Service Industry: The Case Of Retail Pharmacy Industry, Thanigavelan Jambulingam, Ravi Kathuria, William R. Doucette Nov 2004

Entrepreneurial Orientation As A Basis For Classification Within A Service Industry: The Case Of Retail Pharmacy Industry, Thanigavelan Jambulingam, Ravi Kathuria, William R. Doucette

Business Faculty Articles and Research

To date, service classification research has primarily taken a macro view, creating service typologies or taxonomies by using dimensions such as customer contact or degree of labor intensity. Such classification schemes, though helpful in deciphering critical management issues and positioning strategies between service industries, tend to treat an entire industry, such as airlines, as a single homogenous entity. However, organizations in the same industry often use intangible resources, such as entrepreneurial orientation processes, to compete with one another. Resource-advantage theory suggests that organizations utilize intangible resources to build long-term strategies and a sustainable competitive advantage leading to superior performance. We …

The London Coffee Bar 'Problem' Of The 1950s - An Eclectic Design Challenge To The Universalism Of Modernism., Matthew Partington Nov 2004

The London Coffee Bar 'Problem' Of The 1950s - An Eclectic Design Challenge To The Universalism Of Modernism., Matthew Partington

DRS Biennial Conference Series

In his 1957 article, ‘Shoes, Hair and Coffee’, Toni del Renzio identified London coffee bars as one of the places where, ‘a real and genuine popular modern architecture is being created, as outstanding and as anonymous as the gipsy baroque of the fairground used to be. It is in undeniable opposition to the timid, dull and understated pretentiousness that does duty for modern English architecture.' This paper will compare this description of a ‘genuine popular modern architecture’ with other articles about coffee bars in the design and architecture journals of the mid nineteen fifties4.

Translating And Extending Gestalt Grouping Principles To Include Time To Establish A Research Framework In Which To Study Motion., Jinsook Kim, Sharon Helmer Poggenpohl Nov 2004

Translating And Extending Gestalt Grouping Principles To Include Time To Establish A Research Framework In Which To Study Motion., Jinsook Kim, Sharon Helmer Poggenpohl

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper introduces the grouping principles of Gestalt in motion. The motion attributes of speed, direction and duration are embedded in two events: transformation, meaning the act of changing in appearance, and transposition, meaning the act of moving position in space. In extending Gestalt principles from 2D, the following investigations will be visually demonstrated. 1 What is “closeness” in time that can explain proximity in motion? 2 What is “likeness” in time that can explain similarity in motion? 3 What is “absence but presence” in time that can explain closure in motion? 4 What is “correspondence” in time that can …

A Human-Computer Framework For Schema-Driven And Precedent-Driven Visual Analogy In Design., Wei Dai, Hernan Casakin Nov 2004

A Human-Computer Framework For Schema-Driven And Precedent-Driven Visual Analogy In Design., Wei Dai, Hernan Casakin

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The use of visual analogy is considered to be a most suitable aid for design problem solving. Reasoning by analogy deals with two main cognitive paradigms. The first one is concerned with schema-driven analogy, which is defined as the use of abstract experiential knowledge that can direct a design solution to a familiar problem type. The second paradigm has to do with precedent-driven analogy, and is distinguished by the use of a concrete prior design problem whose major components and its corresponding relationships could be explicitly mapped onto the problem at hand. In order to support the use of visual …

A Common Mental Model Of The Design Process., Richard Fry Nov 2004

A Common Mental Model Of The Design Process., Richard Fry

The Influence Of Using Scenario For Idea Generation In Industrial Design, Hau-Rung Chu, Hung Zheng, Yu Ma, Chun-Di Chen Nov 2004

The Influence Of Using Scenario For Idea Generation In Industrial Design, Hau-Rung Chu, Hung Zheng, Yu Ma, Chun-Di Chen

DRS Biennial Conference Series

During the design development, the continuity of design reasoning to produce concepts might be blocked for some reasons. Therefore, designers employ a few methods to facilitate the production of design concepts. One of the methods for such a goal suggested in literature is “scenario method” (Chen, 2000). By giving examples to illustrate how to use the scenario method, many studies have highly confirmed the value of scenario method in enriching the production of design concepts. Arguably, the previous studies interesting in scenario method mainly re-confirm the usability of this method, but fail to provide information about how it is useful …

Creating A Design Knowledge Network., Kathryn Burns, Jack Ingram Nov 2004

Creating A Design Knowledge Network., Kathryn Burns, Jack Ingram

DRS Biennial Conference Series

In the United Kingdom, there have been a number of national and regional initiatives to develop the application of design in small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs). Design-led manufacturing is seen as the principal means by which SMEs in traditional industries can combat the threat of low cost overseas labour and compete successfully in the global marketplace. There is also a complementary movement to develop clusters of companies and other bodies in various industrial sectors. This paper describes the experience of the Design Knowledge Network, a £1.5m project part-funded by the European Union and Advantage West Midlands, the West Midlands …

Hermeneutic Phenomenology As A Method For Reflection In User-Centred Designing., Stella Boess, David Durling, Cherie Lebbon, Christopher Maggs Nov 2004

Hermeneutic Phenomenology As A Method For Reflection In User-Centred Designing., Stella Boess, David Durling, Cherie Lebbon, Christopher Maggs

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper seeks to contribute to the development of tools through which design can reflect on its own efforts and effects. User research and the carrying out of a user- centred design task had raised questions on the self-conception of a user-centred designer vis-à-vis those he/she designs for. Hermeneutic phenomenology was adopted as a methodology for critical reflection on a designer’s own activity of user-centred designing. This paper discusses hermeneutic phenomenology as a methodology for reflection on user-centred designing, laying out some of its elements and discussing its applicability to design. It is hoped that this discussion might lead to …

New Tools For The Teaching Of Communication Design., Paul Cleveland Nov 2004

New Tools For The Teaching Of Communication Design., Paul Cleveland

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The basics of graphic design education have remained almost unchanged over the past 25 years. Apart from the introduction of computers and software as enabling tools, the concepts of what makes good design still relies on a mentoring or apprenticeship system. Knowledge and experience are transferred to the student through project work critiques, or by the analysis of seminal exemplars. Recent developments in generative design and computational models of focal visual attention indicate that software education tools for design based on professional experience and communications research can facilitate targeted design solutions.
