Teaching Mathematics: The Stories Of Six Teachers, Kathleen Ann Schreier Champion
Teaching Mathematics: The Stories Of Six Teachers, Kathleen Ann Schreier Champion
Theses and Dissertations
Mathematics is recognized as an area in which we see significant teacher shortages at both the middle and secondary school level. The purpose of this qualitative study was to identify personality characteristics of six mathematics teachers by interviewing those teachers and having them relate traits they perceived in themselves that helped them teach effectively.
The study’s participants were in-service teachers currently practicing in public school settings in North Dakota. Two teachers from the pool of potential participants were chosen for their certification at each of the following grade levels: elementary, secondary, and dual certification in elementary and secondary education. Both …

Study Habits Of College Students And Their Perceptions Of The Impact Of Brain-Based Attention Strategies On Their Independent Study Time, Sheryl L. Evans
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this research was twofold. The first part explored the study habits of lower-division undergraduate college students during independent study time, with special inquiry into sustained attention and mental effort. A questionnaire and focus groups answered research questions that explored students' general study practices, their study habits, factors influencing study, the length of sustained attention and mental effort, the strategies used to maintain attention, perceptions about productivity, and the metacognitive strategies used (i.e., self-monitoring, self-regulating, planning, and self-evaluating). The study showed that 1) students do not spend enough time studying, 2) the more time students spent on the …
Emotional Intelligence And Performance In Graduate School Counseling Program, Gregory J. Gibson
Emotional Intelligence And Performance In Graduate School Counseling Program, Gregory J. Gibson
Theses and Dissertations
Emotional Intelligence has been described in the popular literature as being a better predictor of life success than cognitive ability or personality (Gibbs, 1995). In recent years, there has been a plethora of emotional intelligence workshops, books, seminars, and web pages dedicated to education and training in the development of emotional intelligence in the workplace and in other life areas. Despite this trend, there is a considerable amount of discrepancy regarding the measurement and description of what emotional intelligence represents. Not surprisingly, there has also been inconsistency in the literature regarding its predictive value with job and academic success. Moreover, …

An Evaluation Of The Components Of An Effectively Functioning E-Logistics System, Douglas Russell
Theses (Pre-2016)
E-Iogistics has quickly developed into an integral component of everyday business processes. Although the foundation of logistical processes has been in existence since the bartering system was initially implemented, e-logistics began to evolve within the last few decades. In spite of the rapid implementation of e-logistics, a compilation of its complete components remains nonexistent. This thesis presents a comprehensive overview of the components of an e-logistics system as well as reviews specific corporations utilizing e-logistics, This includes a review of the two types of businesses conducted, business to business (B2B) and business to customer (B2C). The two main methods of …

A Survey Of Lightning Safety Policy In Selected High Schools, Katie Groszek
Masters Theses
Our research will entail a survey of high school certified athletic trainers in the Great Lakes Athletic Trainers' Association (District 4) of the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA) on lightning safety policy. The NATA has written a position statement (Walsh, 2000) on lightning safety to educate athletic trainers and other individuals on the dangers of lightning and safety guidelines to follow. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) also has lightning safety guidelines for the schools it governs. Despite the recommendations of the NAT A and NCAA, there has been a demonstrated lack of lightning safety policy. The purpose of this …

A Superintendent's Guide To A Successful Bond Proposal, Scott D. Mollenberndt
Masters Theses
For most school districts it has become increasingly difficult to gain voter support for bond referendums. In addition, there is little information available for the superintendent and board of education to reference when considering a bond campaign in their community.
In response to these concerns, "A Superintendent's Guide to a Successful Bond Proposal" was developed to provide campaign strategies, timelines and a sequential list of events for the superintendent to consider. Examples of campaign strategies employed by the Edwardsburg Public Schools, Edwardsburg, Michigan during their successful bond referendum are included as appendices throughout the guidebook.
Through this research, seven essential …

Problem-based learning (PBL,) is a worldwide popular educational philosophy but in some institutions, it is considered a revolutionary teaching strategy to implement. The International Medical University (IMU) has utilized PBL as a key delivery tool of its medical programme and to encourage life-long learning amongst it s students. The university has also carried out faculty development in PBL since its inception in 1992. This is in order to improve PBL sessions, make sure faculty understand what is expected of them during these sessions and ensure our students derive the full benefit of PBL. The aim of this study is to …

錄影教學應用於人際溝通訓練之效果, 翠瀅 汪, 陳美津 施, 明宜 吳
Journal of Medical Education

Journal of Medical Education
High Performance P300 Speller For Brain-Computer Interface, Cuntai Guan, Manoj Thulasidas, Jiankang Wu
High Performance P300 Speller For Brain-Computer Interface, Cuntai Guan, Manoj Thulasidas, Jiankang Wu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
P300 speller is a communication tool with which one can input texts or commands to a computer by thought. The amplitude of the P300 evoked potential is inversely proportional to the probability of infrequent or task-related stimulus. In existing P300 spellers, rows and columns of a matrix are intensified successively and randomly, resulting in a stimulus frequency of 1/N (N is the number of rows or columns of the matrix). We propose a new paradigm to display each single character randomly and individually (therefore reducing the stimulus frequency to 1/(N*N)). On-line experiments showed that this new speller significantly improved the …

Values Of Mobile Commerce To Customers, Keng Siau, H. Sheng, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This research studies the values of m-commerce using a qualitative means-ends approach, called Value-Focused Thinking. The conceptual foundation for this research is the Work System Framework. By interviewing both current and potential m-commerce users, we captured the values of m-commerce and develop a means-ends objective network to illustrate the relationships among these values. As one of the first empirical research to assess the values of m-commerce, this research contributes to an increased understanding of m-commerce. The means-ends objective network also serves as a theoretical foundation for future research in m-commerce. For practitioners, our findings highlight the concerns and issues of …
Assessing The Differential Outcomes Procedure With Children Diagnosed With Autism, Ivy M. Chong
Assessing The Differential Outcomes Procedure With Children Diagnosed With Autism, Ivy M. Chong
Dissertations
The differential outcomes effect (DOE) refers to the phenomenon whereby discrimination learning is enhanced when a correct response to a specific sample stimulus is followed by its own unique reward (Savage, 2001). According to some researchers, the DOE is a consistent and powerful effect that enhances the acquisition and retention of conditional discriminations (e.g., Urcuioli, 1990). This series of experiments sought to extend research on the DOE. In Experiment 1, we examined the differential outcomes procedure (DOP) with four children diagnosed with autism across various task types commonly used in early intervention. In Experiment 2, we examined the DOP with …

U.S. Policy Toward Iraq Within The Context Of Complexity Theories, Alexander Rayssan Dawoody
U.S. Policy Toward Iraq Within The Context Of Complexity Theories, Alexander Rayssan Dawoody
Dissertations
This research investigates the trajectory of the U.S. policy toward Iraq and the factors that went in the making of its phase shifts. The research is qualitative in nature, uses official governmental documents, articles, books, focus groups and one-on-one interviews in order to answer three questions: How does a linear observation interpret the U.S. policy toward Iraq? How do the new sciences of complexity interpret the U.S. policy toward Iraq? How does a linear observation of the U.S. policy toward Iraq contrast and compare with that of a complex analysis? The language of the research is metaphorical. Its analytical model, …
A Multicomponent Intervention System Using Goal Setting, Feedback, And Incentives To Improve Performance In Small Service Businesses, Doug Lafleur
Dissertations
A small business servicing dealerships in the chimney lining industry was responsible for training and resupplying contractors in a propriety chimney lining system. A process was developed for sharing and comparing the dealerships' financial reports and business processes. The process involved a small group of dealers attending regular 6-month meetings called Impact Groups. A monetary incentive system was used to encourage dealers to join the Impact Groups and to maintain continued attendance and participation. Dealers took turns hosting the meetings and having the attending dealers analyze their business. A detailed list of problems and solutions was provided to each host …
Effectiveness Of Teaching Modalities For Pre-College Level Mathematics Courses, Dorothy Latuszek
Effectiveness Of Teaching Modalities For Pre-College Level Mathematics Courses, Dorothy Latuszek
Dissertations
College educators are challenged with providing students with choices of teaching modalities that facilitate student achievement and success at a time when students are also seeking flexible scheduling and accommodation of their differing learning styles. This is certainly the case for college students who need to demonstrate proficiency for the content in pre-college level mathematics courses prior to enrolling in college-level mathematics courses. The term "pre-college level" is defined as courses in reading, writing, and mathematics for college students lacking those skills necessary to perform college-levelcoursework at two- or four-year college institutions (Parsad & Lewis, 2003).
Do certain teaching modalities …
