End-Of-Life Decision-Making Through Advanced Directives And Pallative Care, Beth Lada Morse Sep 2004

End-Of-Life Decision-Making Through Advanced Directives And Pallative Care, Beth Lada Morse

Student Scholarship

There are many socio-cultural and economic factors that shape discussions about treatment options for terminally ill patients. These factors include access to life prolonging medical options, societal priorities regarding the allocation of limited health care resources, cost constraints of payers and societal consensus that patient autonomy underpins life-sustaining treatment decisions. The focus of this study is primarily directed to issues of end-of-life care decisions as they relate to advance directives (AD) and palliative care. It is argued that when death is expected or foreseeable, that advance care planning has value for the individual, family, organization and community. It is debatable …

Determination Of Effective Non-Preemptive Load Balancing Policies, Murali Rajagopalan Sep 2004

Determination Of Effective Non-Preemptive Load Balancing Policies, Murali Rajagopalan

Masters Theses

We propose to analyze the effectiveness of various non-preemptive Load Balancing Policies that are available in Distributed Computing Systems. The result of the analysis demonstrates the usage of various policies and determining a policy that is effective in the given set of problems. It is not about proposing a new distributed algorithm or distributed system policy. However, it has implemented a prototype software lab comprising various policies to determine the effectiveness of existing load balancing policies. There are several programs implemented to test the lab and to generate data to analyze the effectiveness of the distributed policies.

The prototype software …

Optical Filter Elements And Methods Of Making And Using Same, Michael A. Scobey, Lucien P. Ghislain, Dennis J. Derickson, Loren F. Stokes

Electrical Engineering

Optical filter elements and optical systems comprise optically mismatched etalons and optically mismatched stacked, optically coupled etalons that are directly optically coupled, at least one of the etalons or stacked, optically coupled etalons comprising first and second selectively transparent thin film mirror coatings on opposite surfaces of a bulk optic. The optically mismatched etalons can be configured to selectively pass single passbands. The disclosed optical systems optionally comprise other devices optically coupled to the optically mismatched etalons and optionally mismatched stacked, optically coupled etalons.

Preliminary Report On September 28, 2004 Parkfield Earthquake, Rakesh K. Goel, Charles Chadwell

Civil and Environmental Engineering

A strong earthquake of magnitude 6.0 (Mw) struck the Central Coast of California at 10:15:24 AM PST (17:15:24 UTC) on Tuesday, September 28, 2004. The epicenter (Figure 1) was 11 km (7 mile) SSE of Parkfield, at a depth of approximately 8 km (5 mile). The main shock was followed by a strong aftershock of magnitude 5.0 roughly four minutes later. As expected, numerous smaller aftershocks continue to strike to epicentral region. At the time of this report, no injuries have been reported and the damage is light, mostly limited to nonstructural damage. This preliminary report presents …

Production Of E+E− Pairs Accompanied By Nuclear Dissociation In Ultraperipheral Heavy-Ion Collisions, Star Collaboration, T.D. Gutierrez Sep 2004

Production Of E+E− Pairs Accompanied By Nuclear Dissociation In Ultraperipheral Heavy-Ion Collisions, Star Collaboration, T.D. Gutierrez

Physics

We present data on e+e− pair production accompanied by nuclear breakup in ultraperipheral gold-gold collisions at a center of mass energy of 200GeV per nucleon pair. The nuclear breakup requirement selects events at small impact parameters, where higher-order diagrams for pair production should be enhanced. We compare the data with two calculations: one based on the equivalent photon approximation, and the other using lowest-order quantum electrodynamics (QED). The data distributions agree with both calculations, except that the pair transverse momentum spectrum disagrees with the equivalent photon approach. We set limits on higher-order contributions to the cross section.
