Photometric Identification Of Cool White Dwarfs, M. Kilic, D. E. Winget, Ted Von Hippel, C. F. Claver Oct 2004

Photometric Identification Of Cool White Dwarfs, M. Kilic, D. E. Winget, Ted Von Hippel, C. F. Claver

Publications

We investigate the use of a narrowband DDO51 filter for photometric identification of cool white dwarfs. We report photometric observations of 30 known cool white dwarfs with temperatures ranging from 10,000 K down to very cool temperatures (3500 K). Follow-up spectroscopic observations of a sample of objects selected using this filter and our photometric observations show that DDO51 filter photometry can help select cool white dwarf candidates for follow-up multiobject spectroscopy by rejecting 65% of main-sequence stars with the same broadband colors as the cool white dwarfs. This technique is not selective enough to efficiently feed single-object spectrographs. We present …

Brown And Shades Of Gray: Ex Parte Communication In The Litigation Over Racial Justice, Norman I. Silber Oct 2004

Brown And Shades Of Gray: Ex Parte Communication In The Litigation Over Racial Justice, Norman I. Silber

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

As the justices contemplated their case, a complicated picture emerged. Their opinion would dramatically affect the rights of African Americans in predominantly white America. Massive resistance and violence would be the likely result of any holding that upset the status quo. And yet, by acting courageously, the Supreme Court could align the Constitution with human dignity and equality. A clear and bold decision might just avert looming civil unrest.

To buy time for a consensus, the justices delayed. Several received advice from outside the Court and corresponded secretly with political leaders from the other branches of government. Some leaked information …

Community Project Design and Management Reports - Politics and Government

he following paper is a synopsis, examination, and reflection of my experience as a Peace Corps Fellow in the Applied Community and Economic Development Program at Illinois State University. Compiling and examining the experiences of my class work and practical experience have not been an easy chore. However, a more daunting task has been the reflection on my Peace Corps experience that lead me to Illinois State University and this program, the graduate classes and education I received here, and the application of that knowledge and experience in my professional practice. In an attempt to structure this paper I found …

Critique, Culture And Commitment: The Dangerous And Counterproductive Paths Of International Legal Discourse, Geoffrey Hoffman Oct 2004

Critique, Culture And Commitment: The Dangerous And Counterproductive Paths Of International Legal Discourse, Geoffrey Hoffman

Dalhousie Law Journal

In this article, international law is viewed as a social and self-constituting phenomenon As the product of international society's actualization, it contains many biases and prejudices. Given the inherent subjectivity of any system designed to regulate relations between people - and peoples - it is of utmost importance to subject international law to a searching scrutiny of its tendencies to emphasise certain interests, to exalt particular groups and to order society in preconceived ways. This article uncovers the insidious structural biases of international law including those just beneath the surface as well as those that are firmly embedded within the …

I Do' Kiss And Tell: The Subversive Potential Of Non-Normative Socialsexual Expression From Within Cultural Paradigms, Elaine Craig

Dalhousie Law Journal

Using a comparative analysis of the equality movements of sexual minorities in Canada and India the author identifies a symbiosis between the subversive benefits of a deconstructionist approach to equality and the practical achievements to be gained by a rights-based model of social justice. The analysis is conducted through an examination of the role that the expression of same-sex desire plays in the legal and social positions of sexual minorities in Canada and India The author argues that the acquisition of rights can provide sexual minorities with greater access to dominant cultural rituals and that such access provides opportunities to …

"Fictual" Reportage And (Virtual) Reality: Truman Capote's In Cold Blood And Norman Mailer's The Executioner's Song, Rania M. Mahmoud

English Theses & Dissertations

This study discusses Truman Capote's In Cold Blood and Norman Mailer's The Executioner's Song. using Jean Baudrillard's theory of the four stages of the image and John Hellmann's notion of the transforming power of consciousness. Examining two landmarks of what is widely referred to as the nonfiction novel, or creative nonfiction, the study suggests that any attempt to record reality ends up as fabulation, whereby the writer produces his/her own version of reality. Thus, we have multiple realities or, in other words, fables woven out of the interpretive consciousness of individual writers. Taking this a step further, since all our …

Future Perspectives On Employee Selection: Key Directions For Future Research And Practice, Neil Anderson, Filip Lievens, Karen Van Dam, Ann Marie Ryan Oct 2004

Future Perspectives On Employee Selection: Key Directions For Future Research And Practice, Neil Anderson, Filip Lievens, Karen Van Dam, Ann Marie Ryan

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

A future-oriented perspective for selection and assessment research is presented. Four superordinate themes of critical import to the development of future research are identified: (i) bimodal prediction, (ii) multilevel fit, (iii) applicant reactions and decision making, and (iv) tensions between research and practice in employee selection. Under each theme we pose a number of outstanding questions for research. Implications for practice and the ongoing advancement of the sub-field of selection, traditionally one of the most robust core disciplines in international IWO psychology, are discussed.

Designing And Implementing A Blended Learning Approach To Executive Scm Education: A Case Study From Ireland, John Mee, Edward Sweeney Oct 2004

Designing And Implementing A Blended Learning Approach To Executive Scm Education: A Case Study From Ireland, John Mee, Edward Sweeney

Conference papers

The National Institute for Transport and Logistics (NITL) is Ireland’s centre of excellence for supply chain management (SCM). As part of its mission to promote the development of supply chain expertise in Irish business, it designs and delivers executive modular learning programmes. In 2004, as part of a drive to create more flexible learning opportunities for course participants, NITL designed and implemented an eLearning programme, which involved converting traditionally tutored modules to online modules. This paper describes the rationale behind this initiative and the significance of technology as an enabling tool for executive education, as well as detailing the design …

File Early, Then Free Ride: How Delaware Law (Mis)Shapes Shareholder Class Actions, Elliott J. Weiss, Lawrence J. White

Vanderbilt Law Review

Delaware courts have largely privatized enforcement of fiduciary duties in public corporations. In In re Fuqua Industries, Inc. Shareholder Litigation, Chancellor Chandler expressly acknowledged this judicial policy. He noted that Delaware courts implement it partly by allowing private attorneys, working on a contingent fee basis, to initiate and maintain derivative and class actions in the names of "nominal shareholder plaintiffs." Attorneys are subject only to the relatively weak constraints that they must inform their "clients" and receive their consent before they file shareholder suits. Further, Delaware courts use cost and fee shifting mechanisms to "economically incentivize" those attorneys to initiate …
