Isolation Versus Quarantine And Alternative Measures To Control Emerging Infectious Diseases, Fahad A. Al-Ateeg Oct 2004

Isolation Versus Quarantine And Alternative Measures To Control Emerging Infectious Diseases, Fahad A. Al-Ateeg

Saudi Medical Journal

In the past 25 years, the world has witnessed the emergence and re-emergence of many infectious diseases. In the early stages of their emergence, isolation and quarantine may be the only and last resort to effectively control infectious diseases when we are confronted with limited or no knowledge of a newly identified and previously unknown contagious disease, which causes a serious public health threat either locally or internationally. The article traces back the origins of isolation and quarantine; defines precisely the terms isolation and quarantine as they are currently used in the modern era; compare and contrast these terms; identifies …

Congenital Alveolar Proteinosis, Abdulhakeim K. Kattan, Prakash S. Bulagannawar, Iftikhar Hussain Oct 2004

Congenital Alveolar Proteinosis, Abdulhakeim K. Kattan, Prakash S. Bulagannawar, Iftikhar Hussain

Saudi Medical Journal

Pulmonary alveolar proteinosis is recently described as a rare cause of lung dysfunction and respiratory distress in term neonates. In several cases, a deficiency or insufficiency of surfactant protein B SP-B has been caused by a frame shift mutation in the gene encoding SP-B. Three siblings with congenital pulmonary alveolar proteinosis showed clinical and radiological evidence. Histopathological and immunohistochemical studies in the last sibling revealed deficiency of SP-B, one of the group of 3 specific lipoproteins that reduce the surface tension between air and liquid interface within pulmonary alveoli, suggesting a gene associated illness.

Mel Gibson's The Passion Of The Christ: Market Segmentation, Mass Marketing And Promotion, And The Internet, Peter A. Maresco Oct 2004

Mel Gibson's The Passion Of The Christ: Market Segmentation, Mass Marketing And Promotion, And The Internet, Peter A. Maresco

WCBT Faculty Publications

The pre-release publicity surrounding the Mel Gibson film, The Passion of the Christ, warrants an in-depth look at the role that market segmentation and marketing promotion, including use of the Internet, have played in the overall success of the film. As background, films commonly classified as biblical epics are referenced in order to construct a framework that will demonstrate how the promotion of this genre of film, with the exception of the Internet, has essentially changed very little over time. This paper is not a review of the film nor is it intended to be a brief course in marketing. …

Does Sex Of Dyad Members Really Matter?
A Review Of Leader-Member Exchange

Does Sex Of Dyad Members Really Matter? A Review Of Leader-Member Exchange, Brent J. Goertzen, Susan Fritz

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Faculty Publications

Leader-member exchange (LMX) generally refers to the leadership process centered on the interactions between leaders and direct reports. The basic premise of high quality leader-member exchange relationships holds that direct reports gain tremendous benefits through these partnerships. LMX is perhaps the most commonly researched theory of leadership. However, few studies have specifically examined the role of dyad members’ sex as a predictor of quality LMX. Several studies investigating the role of dyad members’ sex and quality LMX examined the effect of sex in an aggregated variable, demographic similarity, which often included other demographic characteristics such as age, education level and …

A Survey Of Gender-Related Motivation Studies: Subordinate Status, Roles, And Stereotyping , Kay Lynn Kalkowski, Susan Fritz Oct 2004

A Survey Of Gender-Related Motivation Studies: Subordinate Status, Roles, And Stereotyping , Kay Lynn Kalkowski, Susan Fritz

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Faculty Publications

Since the days when women first began entering the work force scholars have studied perceived gender differences related to motivation in organizational settings. This paper first presents a brief overview of motivation theory and then examines the literature tracing gender related motivation-to-manage as it evolves through the 1950s and 1960s to the present. Studies have produced conflicting results with some finding that men have more motivation-to-manage then women and other studies finding the opposite. Such differences appear to be small and closely related to subordinate status and role stereotyping.

The Public And Private Faces Of Derivative Lawsuits, Randall S. Thomas, Robert B. Thompson Oct 2004

The Public And Private Faces Of Derivative Lawsuits, Randall S. Thomas, Robert B. Thompson

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

Derivative suits, long the principal vehicle for discussions about representative litigation in corporate and securities law, now share the stage with younger cousins - securities fraud class actions and state law fiduciary duty class actions. At the same time alternative governance vehicles - independent directors, auditors and other reforms that have followed in the wake of Enron - potentially diminish the relative place of litigation such as derivative suits. This article presents data from all derivative suits filed in Delaware over a two-year period. We find a relatively small number, certainly as compared to fiduciary class action and securities fraud …

Mcdonald’S And Samoan Youth: A Case Study Of Globalization, Anna Schechter Oct 2004

Mcdonald’S And Samoan Youth: A Case Study Of Globalization, Anna Schechter

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The topics of change, development and globalization are extremely pertinent to modern-day Samoa. The past ten years have lead to a vast increase in the inter-connectedness of Samoa to the world economically, socially, and culturally. This paper uses McDonald’s as a representation of the globalization occurring in Samoa in order to better understand the real impacts of these abstract terms. Samoan youth act as a medium in which to explore this topic. They are often the most attune to the impacts of globalization and perhaps even act as a catalyst for change. Thus this paper explores, specifically, the relationship between …

Effect Of Therapist Color-Blindness On Empathy And Attributions In Cross-Cultural Counseling, Alan W. Burkard, Sarah Knox Oct 2004

Effect Of Therapist Color-Blindness On Empathy And Attributions In Cross-Cultural Counseling, Alan W. Burkard, Sarah Knox

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

Empathy and attributions of client responsibility for the cause of and solution to a problem were examined for 247 psychologists who were identified as having low, moderate, and high color-blind racial attitudes. Participants responded to 1 of 4 vignettes that controlled for client race (i.e., African American, European American) and client attributions regarding the cause (i.e., depression, discrimination) of a problem. Analyses revealed that the therapists’ level of color-blindness was directly related to their capacity for empathy and also to their attributions of responsibility for the solution to the problem with an African American client but not with a European …

Ethical Decision-Making In Library Administration, Stephen R. Shorb Oct 2004

Ethical Decision-Making In Library Administration, Stephen R. Shorb

The Southeastern Librarian

The first section of this paper develops a simple model for ethical decision-making. A useful model serves two main purposes. First, it easily explains the relationship between the various components of ethical decision-making by creating a chain between the most basic underlying values, the intervening ethical processes, and the actions that finally result. Thus, decisions can be more easily explained and justified. Second, use of the model may also assist in the actual implementation of the decision. A step-by-step progression through the model has the additional benefit of modeling the developmental stages found in models for the ethical maturation of …

The Parable Of The Prodigal Son, Karen P. Sames Osb Oct 2004

The Parable Of The Prodigal Son, Karen P. Sames Osb

School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses

This project began with the investigation of the role of parables in the teachings of Jesus Christ. I researched the function of parables and the different levels of interpretation. Then I studied the Parable of the Prodigal Son in depth looking at the parable through a window into the past and reflecting on the meaning that the parable had in history and then looking at it like a reflection in a mirror to see what the parable has to say to us today. The research included a look at the characters of the parable and the roles they played in …

Spatiotemporal Distribution Of Marine Magnetotactic Bacteria In A Seasonally Stratified Coastal Salt Pond, S. L. Simmons, S. M. Sievert, Richard B. Frankel, Dennis A. Bazylinski, K. J. Edwards Oct 2004

Spatiotemporal Distribution Of Marine Magnetotactic Bacteria In A Seasonally Stratified Coastal Salt Pond, S. L. Simmons, S. M. Sievert, Richard B. Frankel, Dennis A. Bazylinski, K. J. Edwards

Physics

The occurrence and distribution of magnetotactic bacteria (MB) were studied as a function of the physical and chemical conditions in meromictic Salt Pond, Falmouth, Mass., throughout summer 2002. Three dominant MB morphotypes were observed to occur within the chemocline. Small microaerophilic magnetite-producing cocci were present at the top of the chemocline, while a greigite-producing packet-forming bacterium occurred at the base of the chemocline. The distributions of these groups displayed sharp changes in abundance over small length scales within the water column as well as strong seasonal fluctuations in population abundance. We identified a novel, greigite-producing rod in the sulfidic hypolimnion …
