Response Of The Martian Thermosphere/Ionosphere To Enhanced Fluxes Of Solar Soft X Rays, Jane L. Fox Oct 2004

Response Of The Martian Thermosphere/Ionosphere To Enhanced Fluxes Of Solar Soft X Rays, Jane L. Fox

Physics Faculty Publications

We have investigated the response of the thermosphere and ionosphere of Mars to enhanced fluxes of solar soft X rays, such as those that have been detected by the SNOE satellite (e.g., Bailey et al., 2000 ). We have constructed standard models by adopting the SC#21REFW and F79050N solar fluxes from H. E. Hinteregger (private communication) (see also Torr et al., 1979 ) for the low and high solar activity models, respectively. We then constructed enhanced soft X-ray models by multiplying the solar photon fluxes for wavelengths below 200 Å by a factor of 3 at low solar …

There are gestures and facial expressions that replace words and are immediately understood by natives of each country. The same signs may exist in another culture and have different meanings. Although these cultural traits are very simple, they must be performed very accurately; otherwise they are as meaningless as a mispronounced word.

The Efficacy Of A School-Based Support Group On Adolescent Self-Esteem And Social Support, Julia Ann Smith Phd

Dissertations

Adolescents are faced with daily obstacles that affect their ability to progress into adulthood successfully. Rising divorce rates and subsequent single parenting, adolescent pregnancy, drug and alcohol abuse, violence, and lack of parental involvement represent only a few of the many issues teens confront. School nurses are on the front lines, attempting to educate youth against an alarming rise in personal and social controversies that impede their ability to come to school ready to learn. As part of the educational team, school nurses are in a prime position to develop and integrate intervention strategies aimed at assisting adolescents during this …

Asymmetric Atp Binding And Hydrolysis Activity Of The Thermus Aquaticus Muts Dimer Is Key To Modulation Of Its Interactions With Mismatched Dna, Edwin Antony, Manju M. Hingorani Oct 2004

Asymmetric Atp Binding And Hydrolysis Activity Of The Thermus Aquaticus Muts Dimer Is Key To Modulation Of Its Interactions With Mismatched Dna, Edwin Antony, Manju M. Hingorani

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Prokaryotic MutS and eukaryotic Msh proteins recognize base pair mismatches and insertions or deletions in DNA and initiate mismatch repair. These proteins function as dimers (and perhaps higher order oligomers) and possess an ATPase activity that is essential for DNA repair. Previous studies of Escherichia coli MutS and eukaryotic Msh2−Msh6 proteins have revealed asymmetry within the dimer with respect to both DNA binding and ATPase activities. We have found the Thermus aquaticus MutS protein amenable to detailed investigation of the nature and role of this asymmetry. Here, we show that (a) in a MutS dimer one subunit (S1) binds nucleotide …

Islamic Revival Among Second-Generation Arab-American Muslims: The American Experience And Globalization Intersect, Louise Cainkar Oct 2004

Islamic Revival Among Second-Generation Arab-American Muslims: The American Experience And Globalization Intersect, Louise Cainkar

Social and Cultural Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

This article examines the chain of events that facilitated an Islamic revival among second-generation Arab-American Muslims. Based upon research in metropolitan Chicago, it argues against trends in the literature that described Western-born Muslims as foreigners, immigrants or, worse, anti-Western. Similarly, it argues against setting their religious experiences solely in a domestic context. The article begins by documenting the lack of religious institutions and practices among immigrant Arab Muslims before the 1990s and the limited religious socialization of their American-born children. These conditions emerged in part from secular trends in the immigrants' homelands. By the 1990s, a period of global Islamic …

Parents' Perceptions Of Life Skills Gained By Youth Participating In The 4-H Beef Project, Chris T. Boleman, Scott R. Cummings, Gary E. Briers

Journal of Extension

Does participating in the 4-H beef project help develop life skills in youth? Randomly selected parents of youth were mailed a survey asking them to determine if 13 life skills were enhanced as a result of their child participating in the 4-H beef project. The rank order for the top five mean scores were: "accepting responsibility," "setting goals," "develop self-discipline," "self motivation," and "knowledge of the livestock industry." A Pearson product moment correlation coefficient also revealed a low-to-moderate positive relationship for life skill development and years of participating in the 4-H beef project.

Communicating Impacts, Karen L. Zotz

Journal of Extension

This article addresses the need to share Extension program impacts with our constituencies and groups that fund our programs. The article reviews the literature surrounding the need for communicating impacts with decision makers. It also identifies two reporting mechanisms used in one state, County Narrative Reports and the Extension Accountability Reporting System (EARS), that are successfully working to share program impacts with county commissioners, legislators, and the general public. The success of these two reporting systems is based on level or increased funding we have received at the county and state level since the implementation of these two systems.

Turn The Other Cheek, Or Demand An Eye For An Eye? Religious Persecution In China And An Effective Western Response, Ellen S. Reinstein

Connecticut Journal of International Law

The Western world has watched in amazement over the past decade as the number of religious practitioners has rapidly increased in the People's Republic of China. Although no solid census has been taken, it is estimated that there now are up to 70 million Protestants and 12 million Catholics in the PRC.' Approximately eight million Uighur Muslims live in the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region,2 and most of the 2.6 million ethnic Tibetans continue to practice Tibetan Buddhism.3 In addition, many Chinese are now involved in "fringe" religions such as Falun Gong.

This growth and persistence of religion has alarmed Chinese …

Asylum Protection For The Mentally Disabled: How The Evolution Of Rights For The Mentally Ill In The United States Created A "Social Group", Laura E. Hortas

Connecticut Journal of International Law

The tradition of asylum law in the United States reflects the nation's ideals of freedom and opportunity and its desire to welcome the oppressed of other countries. Over time, however, the government has tempered this humanitarian goal with controls and restrictions on who can gain asylum, including statutory criteria that include "persecution or a well-founded fear of persecution on account of race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion."' The definition of "membership in a particular social group," adopted from the 1951 Geneva Convention relating to the Status of Refugees, is the least clearly defined category …

Developing A District Health System In South Africa, Sarah Black Oct 2004

Developing A District Health System In South Africa, Sarah Black

Connecticut Journal of International Law

South Africa has been working to overhaul its public health sector since the end of apartheid. In 1995, as an initial step, South Africa began offering free primary health care to its entire population.' In October 2003, the long awaited National Health Bill' was finally passed. The Bill implemented a district health system with a focus on providing primary care, and represents an important step in assuring that primary care services in the public sector are accessible to everyone who needs them. The new health care system has been implemented with a clear focus on redressing historical inequities in health …

Patterns Of Tuberculosis In The Central Nervous System, Soobia Raza, Aliyah Sadaf, Faisal Fecto, Rushna Pervez Ali, Muhammad Ehsan Bari, Ather Enam

Medical College Documents

Tuberculous involvement of central nervous system (CNS), although not very frequent, results in severe morbidity. Tuberculosis (TB) is endemic in developing countries but even in developed countries, after an initial decline up until 1980’s, incidence of TB is on the rise. The AIDS epidemic, emergence of multi-drug resistant strains and immigration of people from endemic areas are some of the factors significantly contributing to this increase. Consequently, the burden of central nervous system tuberculosis has increased significantly worldwide.

Novel Weapons: Invasive Success And The Evolution Of Increased Competitive Ability, Ragan M. Callaway, Wendy M. Ridenour Oct 2004

Novel Weapons: Invasive Success And The Evolution Of Increased Competitive Ability, Ragan M. Callaway, Wendy M. Ridenour

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

When introduced to new habitats by humans, some plant species become much more dominant. This is primarily attributed to escape from specialist consumers. Release from these specialist enemies is also thought by some to lead to the evolution of increased competitive ability, driven by a decrease in the plant's resource allocation to consumer defense and an increase in allocation to size or fecundity. Here, we discuss a new theory for invasive success – the “novel weapons hypothesis”. We propose that some invaders transform because they possess novel biochemical weapons that function as unusually powerful allelopathic agents, or as mediators of …
